The new 1000cc V4 is set to feature ride-by-wire throttle, hi-tech electronics which Aprilia claim make traction control possible and an engine designed and built in-house by the Italian firm.

As you can just about make out in the picture, the bike features Ohlins suspension and radial brembo brakes. What you don't quite get from the picture is a sense of just how small and compact this new Aprilia supersports machine is.

Aprilia have revealed that the new RSV4 weighs in at 190kg fully fueled, which incidentally is 9kg less than a Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade weighs with an empty tank.

The RSV4 will be available in 2 versions- the higher spec Factory version will feature better suspension and brakes, but both have adjustable engine mounts allowing the engine to be moved 10mm up or down, as well as a movable swingarm pivot and a changeable head stock angle.

Aprilia have yet to release a power figure for the road bike, but the race bike is making 210bhp at the gearbox.

Aprilia have ambitious plans for their 2 rider WSB race team- they plan to finish in the top 10 in year 1, be winning races in year 2 and win the championship by year 3. They've already signed Max Biaggi for one slot but the other rider is yet to be announced.

Miguel Galluzzi, RSV4 stylist famous for creating the Ducati Monster and Cagiva Raptor, claims that a naked Tuono style streetfighter version of the RSV4 is on the cards in the future.

WTF is with the latest styling of the 'wasp rear end' in all the new bikes?

Maybe its for weight reduction but I can never get my head around a bike that is heavy looking in the front and catwalk-model thin in the arse....... damn fugly. There should be a balance in the styling.

But like everything else in the class - pretty much irrelevant for road use around Auckland - unless you enjoy being frustrated by wasting two thirds of its potential.

The site where I grabbed the pics says:
Pricing isn’t likely to be for the faint of heart – expect to pay around US$30,000 for the base model, with the Factory version probably being closer to US$40,000!

That would make the base model the equivalent of $43,000NZD. People are speculating that the cost of the base model will be on-par with the 1098S and the factory will on-par with the 1098R.

"Front bias" has been the trend with sportbikes for a while and it's getting more and more extreme. It's meant to make them look more aggressive having the bulk of the bike toward the front. Though the opposite is meant to work with choppers, and having the bulk in the centre works for the likes of the MT01 and the Monster.

Fortunately my taste in bikes has stayed around the 2004 era which is more affordable. Though I love this bike since it's a 1000cc V-4, there needs to be more V-4's.

Yes, but I can't understand why the bikes look they could poke your eyes out! They're just going through a bit of an ugly phase and should hopefully grow out of it...

190kg fully tanked, 210hp at the crank... NICE!

Thats 1.105hp per Kg.

So if a car weighs 1250kg (e.g. A Pagani Zonda) then it should have an equivilant power of 1381hp...

Sounds... FUN!! :sunny:

20 yrs on and another Italian company copies one of the ugliest CBR's of all time (and frankly there have been a few) to produce this Swamp Donkey.
And now, while I shed a tear, can we please have 3 minutes silence for Italian design.

Is MCN the mag frequently slagged off hereabout for works of fiction ?

The article in the original post says, "Aprilia have revealed that the new RSV4 weighs in at 190kg fully fueled, which incidentally is 9kg less than a Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade weighs with an empty tank."

The CBR1000RR spec says, "199kg Includes all standard equipment, required fluids and a full tank of fuel - ready to ride."

So if that much is bollocks, and it definitely appears to be, how much of the other detail is the work of an over active imagination?

I'm not saying it's not a nice bike. In fact I'll add it to my list of "Lotto bikes" just in case...

on another note

spy pictures of the rsv4 (standard) have are starting to surface.

Like the rsvr & rsvr factory lines

the rsv4 have non-ohlins suspension, less/no carbon fiber, no forged aluminum rims, brakes, there is also some rumours about removing some of the fancy engine things eg variable intake, etc.

But i don't think they would do that,

i think removing the downgrading the brakes, suspension, wheels, follows same lines as the rsv & rsvr series will be the goer.

Not as small as i thought it was going to be, but by no means tall and i guess this exagrerates the feel of the riding position, which is gonna be plenty forwards. I assume that's why the riders seat has to be one of the longest i've seen. The ugly arse end isn't ugly at all and looks like a miniature rear end of an F-15... even the howitzer exhaust is kind of in proportion with the rest of the bike, well made and although fookin huge, i wouldn't see it as a priority to change it... just my 2c

what do you think of it?

Only had a round town, pin it on the on-ramp ride, but appears quite stunning.

I didn't get it in to race mode, street and track were more than adequate. Like I said earlier in the thread - it's upper end performance is to the point of some 'irrelevance' for use on the road. You just won't use where it goes.

Track day pinning it down the back straight of Pukekohe would be absolutely joyous.

It reminded me of the Triumph triple is some ways - with 50 more horsepower.
V-twin torque with IL4 revs.

I guessed wrong about some of it though. With the mapping modes it is a useable street bike if you can live with the temptations. Killer track weapon.

So how big are ya Dave??? How comfy was it? I sat on one yesterday and it felt like it could be quite uncomfortable as an everyday bike... I'm 5'10 and whilst i got both feet on the floor quite comfortably, it felt as if i was gonna fall over the front end if i had made a grab for the bars, but once on the bars, i felt more pressure in my back (likely could be alleviated by having feet on pegs etc...) Verdict? or wait for your article ha ha

Too big to ride it fast and I look silly on it. But I could ride it OK. With reasonable comfort.

I don't suffer from back or wrist issues with this type of ergonomic.
Knees yelp a bit after an hour.

I'd say 5' 10" would be optimal.

OT - but I'd like to be able to easily embed the Flickr slide shows.

They definitely dont work. Xwhatsit designed a work around but the effort is not commensurate.

I like this sort of layout.

There are 50 picture there you can look at in 1 window - and have numerous other display options available.

Edit.
It seems that all the previously embedded images with the <img src=" tag are not displaying. OP eg.

If the slideshow already exists on Flickr, just add the URL to the src value of an IFrame... cheap and nasty trick, but it's worked for me for 15 years...

Cheers. For me there are easier options. I can just link to various other sites within the empire. :devil2:

Now that really is tatsy, and I'd have one in the carport if I had a spare $45k.

What I'd like to know is how the hell Biaggi and Nakano touch the ground when they're on the start line. That seat looks pretty tall.

specs say 845, but saying that they they only have to touch ground for a short time on flat surface, with 1 leg.

Heh, i'm 5'10 (shortish legs) and had both feet flat on the ground, something you can't say about the RSVR... i think it's just the ever raising rear end that gives it the appearance of sitting that high, as it did look really tall when i was standing next to it, waiting to throw the leg over (it being on a plinth may have had something to do with it too )... Just need a few hours to test one... then sell THE wife and hire out the kids as chimney sweeps...

okay pics of the rsv4-r

Which is the base model rsv4,

Motor/chasis is the same, has fly by wire.
Its missing the carbon fibre, and all the ohlins, and forged wheels, so simlar to the way rsvr and rsvr factory work, currently.

One wonders if the local distributors plan to honour the factory warranty on these lovely beasts.
