What happened to reason, fairness and justice?
As soon as I arrived in Dunedin a couple of weeks ago I got stung $40 for "Did park a vehicle on a footpath." I see, browsing through threads here, I'm not the first to be stung this way. What really pisses me is that I am not in the habit of this and that I did have the opportunity to take a whole car park but relinquished it as a courtesy to a passing car. NEVER AGAIN! So many four letter words come to mind to describe the DCC prats responsible. "Mean" is the only one fit to print here...

They've always been shits. When I was down there in '85 they were like Hitler Youth riding on scooters - sometimes it seemed if you stopped at a traffic light they'd be ready to ticket you.
Got one back once - turning into a car park in Moray place this turd ran into the back of me and got all aggro - I told him if he thought he had a case to call the police, otherwise piss off. He just muttered something, picked up his scooter and buggered off.

i know its parked out of the way and all!!! but you still are on a footparh.
i was parking in a no parking zone ,in the octagon a mere 30 cms from a 5 minute park ,and the parking lady told me to move, and i was just standing there having a ciggie, so i muttered and mumbled ,and moved the 30 cms ,in which then a car couldent fit in the space i had left and i got evils from cages for the next 5 or so

Yes...you are right...quite clearly in the middle of the pedestrian thoroughfare...and we must set an example for the others...there can be no place for non-conformists...what was he thinking...the large pile of pedestrians on the ground confirms the danger...

I'm at war with the Auckland Retard Council's Parking Services. They're a bunch of stupid fucks.

Auckland City Council advis ethat they consider parking motorbikes on the footpath hazardous because "little children might burn their hands on the hot exhaust pipes".

In Brisbane City the Councill is trialing extra motorcycle parks on the footpath they have actually marked parks at the back of the footpath in areas that there are no shop fronts:rockon:

Clearly aussie kids (and perhaps even bureaucrats...) are smarter than their NZ counterparts.

Compared to the rather pathetic "obstructing the footpath" from the dunners CC, that is probably the closest to a reasonable reason for "public safety".
Of course there is nothing to stop the kid walking off the footpath and burning its hand on the pipe of the bike parked in a carpark!

Personally I would continued on the angle of tourist thing... didn't know where the bike parks were... Also wanted to keep bike in sight so your gear / luggage wasn't going to be tampered as has happened already on this trip (Yeah I know it hasn't but still...)
However at the end of the day it is on the footpath... end story... and they have every right...

Yeah I had a run in with one earlier this year in my car. Was in a 5 min park, just about to move out of it, stupid guy on his scooter parks up right beside my window and tells me to 'move my car right now!'........I told him: 'well I would, if you moved out of the bloody way!'
.....and they wonder why people dont respect them:Playnice:

One of my flatmates got a ticket for parking facing the wrong way on a one way street. It was the street we live on. It isn't a one way street!

I can't believe how many of these threads I have seen.
Often attached is a clear photo of them parked on a FOOTPATH. Along with words along the lines of:
"The B....ds! Thy ticketed me for parking on the FOOTPATH!!!" :argue:
Can someone help me here?
Let me give you an example. Blind person walks around seat (detected by cane and expected) and trips over your bike (shouldn't be there/illegal and not expected). Falls forward, hits head on rubbish bin and dies... Who is to blame?
ALONG WITH SPEEDING. IF YOU DO SOMETHING ILLEGAL AND GET CAUGHT/TICKETED - DON'T BITCH ABOUT IT!

in most cases, bikes are parked where no logical person would walk anyway [between sandwich boards, rubbish bins etc] and well out of the way of general foot traffic. if a blind person is in danger of falling over a motorbike, id say they are just in as much danger of tripping over the other assorted hazards on footpaths.
i do remember a local rider parking on the footpath in the main street up against a garden fence. ticket issuer walked along, and commented to me that they should give him a ticket, but as he had no kickstand, they wouldnt.

Another blind person walks around seat (detected by cane and expected) and trips over first blind person lying dead on the footpath (shouldn't be there/illegal and not expected). Falls forward, hits head on rubbish bin and dies... Who is to blame?
Another blind person walks........

In the handicap car parks :Pokey:

Well, I'm not handicapped. But the blind people obviously are . So why can't *they* be stacked up in the handicapped parks ? And leave the footpath free for its proper purpose, parking bikes.

Well you'd have to wouldn't you - there's obviously no room on the footpath anymore what with all the dead blind people piling up...

today alone, while walking around i spotted 3 bikes parked on the pavement. There is a regular down by the uni hospital/physio place and has done it all year.
And a bike was parked on the pavement in the octagon today.
I think it also comes down to just how grumpy the warden is at the time.

I thought people in Dunedin were one-eyed, not blind.....
(p/t)
I got a ticket for parking on the footpath behind work (4 bikes there that day, so thought it was all good) came back and all the bikes had a ticket. Now I park in the ACC carpark (they are free for bikes, as well as under cover, well lit, etc).
Was going to appeal (Council policy to reduce carbon footprint, reduce congestion, etc) but decided it was a fair cop. Now I take a whole carpark when I am out (and not at work)

Then there was that day way back we did a ride with BB#1 (now Terminated) and we all parked on the footpath outside the Bristol and nobody bothered us except the dude from the Waikato that took a liking to Paul's Triumph - so I guess its not always bad in this country.

Thanks everybody for your interest and comments. I've especially appreciated the humor
I did note (with irony) the motorcycle park around the next corner when I moved away. Room for three bikes and at about 7:00 pm on a Friday evening, all taken...
Perhaps DCC does have every right, but in my view (and looking at the size of the penalty - $40, heaps more than overstaying your welcome in a metered space) this rule is to prevent obstruction of pedestrian thoroughfare and to prevent damage to the footpath from HEAVY vehicles. I am adamant I did neither, though in hindsight, parking practically at the front door of DCC offices may have been viewed as provocative...
When all is done, I will come out of this a lot more belligerent about where and how I park my bike. I don't think the exercise has served DCC or any other council well towards addressing inner city traffic problems. I will tell them so too when I get to paying the fine, though I do doubt anyone will take a scrap of notice.
Cheers guys.

that bike park usually has 3 or 4 real bikes and 6 scooters jammed in it

Haha! thats so true:laugh:
Well I was thinking just now (crazy I know:p) ....but, since the DCC is upping all the parking charges in and around the city centre, I'm guessing people will be a bit anti paying $4 or so an hour just to park on the main st, so maybe they could remove a couple 'car' parks and turn them into 'motorcycle' parks. I know there are already quite a few, but everytime I go to use one in the area I need to go, they always seem to be chocka:doh:
