View Full Version : Quick riding Vs. Hairloss

I have wondered about this for some time now? Is there a link between riding quick on the road and hair loss?
Looking at the Isle of Man TT interviews and seeing the balding scalp of all these top racers, it makes me think.
I think I have searched about this on the net but I didn't find any info.
There are plenty of top racers with great hair in races involved in proper purpose built racetracks but how about riding QUICK on the road where there are crazy amounts of different variables to work with. Where the environment can change at a rapid rate and the situation is most certainly unpredictable. That is probably why there are more balding racers in Isle of man TT than in MotoGP??
What do you guys reckon?

I reckon you spend far too much time contemplating, and not enough riding. :Pokey:

:shit: OMG, is that why we only ever see you riding on a track now? Are you seriously worried you will lose your hair????

Not necessarily, but there could be a link of sorts given that hair loss is dependent in part on high testosterone levels.

Hairloss can be attributed to worry ...
Therefore, Skunk, you worry about how slow you are - hence your hairloss
MR worries about hairloss so will lose hair... doubly so because he will be worrying about riding fast on the road, and getting done... Man - you'll soon just be able to paint him red white and blue and it'll look like he's wearing leathers and a helmet
I'm losing my hair because I worry about whether my bike looks shiny or not :)

Surely someone else must have come to the same conclusion right? Or am I the only one?
Hmmmm... Maybe Ms RR might be correct. Can you please win that Lotto ticket so that you can buy me a 05' R1 road bike with some pocket change to put some fuel in it so that I can actually afford to go on some road rides?
Until then, my push bike keeps me happy between race meets.

Sweetie, if I won Lotto I'd be straight down to the bike shops and there would be a whole heap of bikes ordered - and yes there would be an R1 with your name on it. But sadly, every week I buy a ticket, and every week I win nothing! Knowing how generous I will be, can the Gods of lottery wins please smile benevolently on me? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze

Hmmm, ride fast on road = hair loss, well there is never much on my head any way, but if it means getting rid of the small forest coming through on my back, then ride fast i shall.

Its a well-known fact that hair loss is caused by testosterone.
Testosterone is linked to agression, lack of fear, and generally manly-type behaviour.
Make of that what you will. :sly:

Actually, it's not really hairloss.
I reckon for every hair that falls off my head, two replacemets grow on my back... :disapint:

(snort) hmm, I think aging may also be a factor.

(snort) hmm, I think aging may also be a factor. Some of us must age quicker that others then because my hair loss was noticable @ 25.
By the way all the males in my Father's family have the same bauldness pattern and all have lived long lives (Grandpa died @ 98), and you would hardly call me agressive.
I think the "Scientists" need to go back to the drawing board.

It's not the quick riding that causes it
It's the crashing and recovering, stressing out as your championship points dwindle away while your holed up in a cast

Hairloss can be attributed to a lot of things, one being calcium buildup around the hair follicle, which causes the hair to shrink and become fine dander (I have this problem and I am 22)
The other, which is probably more so for bike riders is the wearing of hats/helmets, because for the hair follicle to be healthy it requires air and movement, in a helmet, that is not so.
Either way, I got drunk yesterday and looked in the mirror and said, I am fine that I am going bald! And the stripper last night didn't mind either as I gave her a shot glass to keep!

Well, I would think It can certainly be stress related amoung other things. Having watched some of the Isle of Man footage, the average racer doing well would have to have had quite a few 'OOOO F*** there's a wall!!' moments before getting to the top of that sport.

Its a well-known fact...
A well-known fallacy, I think you mean.
Hair loss is caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT) acting on receptors in the hair follicles.
Testosterone is converted in the body via the 5-alpha reductase enzyme into DHT.
Incidentally, the drug finasteride (Propecia, et al) works by blocking the action of that enzyme, thereby lowering DHT levels.

The body can only produce a certain amout of hormones and to produce hair the body requires a reasonable proportion of those hormones. Now those with receeding hair have come to the conclusion that that proportion could be more beneficial being used elsewhere. Some women prefer men that are loosing/lost their hair, ever wondered why? :devil2:
