Bloody hell in a short year the old man has gone from not being able to understand/read english and associated bills to pay,to being able to sue the system.Sad thing to happen but the coroner did state her obesity was the cause of death more so than lack of power.
I say don't give em money, get the govt to buy em a KFC franchise. At least we'll get some money back in taxes.

I bet the lawyers have been circling them like buzzards. I doubt its what the family wanted, but it doesnt take much for someone to talk you into trying for riches.
So if contact energy had done this to your mother, how would you react???
maybe

Just had the mis-fortune to catch the news on TV,if she wasnt so damn obese she would still be KFCs pin up to this day, watched what i am told (though i not convinced it was human) her son waddling into the courthouse and laughed aloud at how fucking sad this land has become. The power went off and they had no choice other than to let her die, what a load of shit.New Zealand has become a sponge soaking up every bit of flotsam that cares to wash up on our shores.Racist......bullshit,realist:niceone:

I'd just sit on the couch and watch her die....I'd cry heaps and when the man said he could get us lots of money I'd say yeah man.
I can't find it - but on a radio news show (Hauraki) they listed the final warnings and demands made to them....they'd have to be fucking totally ignorant to not know they were well beyond the last straw with non payment.
I was in business for 11 years - and had bad debt from only one racial group....they have no concept of money what so ever.Very, very, very hard to get money out of them....but they give heaps to the church. That used to really annoy me.

Come on fellas the sky bill was due and the durries were low of course the power bill was gonna get left for next month.
Used to (when I was a lot younger) sell Sky door to door (one of the worst fucking jobs ever btw) but the number of people that you could tell really couldn't afford it but would sign up anyway far outweighed those that could afford it. Sky didn't care who we sold it to so long as we got them signed up and locked in.

And they could have gone the prepay way for power, all they needed to do was switch companies to one which sold prepay,i.e genesis, then arrange to pay meridian after they had paid their dues at church. Why didn't the church give them money?Oh that's right they get the $$$ from congregation not giving to them.

What rips my undies is they are also going to sue the local dhb for not fully explaining how critical her condition was. So like she’s having trouble breathing.
Q: does that sound;
a) life threatening?
b) like a bit of humour & nothing to worry about?
So the dhb & thus we the tax payers had to buy & supply this piece of 100k(?) equipment that let’s face it would never be available in the islands because she was morbidly obese. - Then pay for their payout, because money will make them feel better?
Seems like the dhb should be presenting them with a bill & sue them for hardship as they could be spending the money saving other people.
With more people becoming incapacitated from gluttony is this going to continue & who is going to pay for it?

Thankfully the coroner's report completely exonerated the poor bloke. I hope everyone who accused him of manslaughter or worse is lining up to apologise. I'd love to see him sue all those talkback hosts that slagged him off for ratings...Willie Jackson?? Hmm?

Correct. Two things, though.
Hers was a palliative care regime, her condition wasn't treatable, she had repeatedly been made aware of that.
What the DHB did wrong is that they failed to adequately record the fact that they'd had that conversation with the client's NOK. That's what makes such action legally possible.
The DHB's service Mgr will have been waving a big stick amongst her staff, and if she's successful in getting them to conform to accepted procedures then that's yet another non-productive drain on the resource.

She died several hours after the power was cut.
What was the family thinking in those hours?
"Mmm...no power, breathing machine not working, doh. Maybe I should call the ambulance, nah...that'll be too smart"

Exactly. If my mum needed mains power to stay alive she sure as shit would get it. And now they get to sue someone because they're too fucking stupid to keep their own mother alive. Fuck it. Fuck ... it.

Is there room on their porch for a couple of pokey machines?
Seems like a good way to take back any compensation they get.

Our power got cut off a couple of years ago (we were paying for the wrong house, cos the power co stuffed up the meter numbers).
Anyway, after an hour (and several phone calls), I was on phone to the call centre to them telling them that I was about to cut the little seal thing on the meter and switch my power back on.
And I refuse to believe that no-one in that house had a cellphone if their phone was also cut off.
Also, don't forget that they have already had $10K from the power company.

This is like compensating people for their own stupidity. They have also had their power cut off several times before this incident. Power co should have told them to go piss up a rope. They did nothing wrong!

They got $10,000 off the power company when this first happened, not to mention all the donated goods and now they want more. It is obvious she contributed a great deal to her own death by being morbidly obese so why should they be compensated?
I don't know if all the kids were born in NZ but if they weren't, they should send them back to where they came from. Have you seen the size of them? They showed the young teenage son on the news the other night and he would already be well over 100kg so he's going to go down the same path as his mother and also be a burden on our health system.
As someone pointed out the other day, if his mother required oxygen that needed a power supply to work, the FIRST bill that would be paid every month would be the power bill. Not the KFC bill.
