CBR1KRR or ZX7R ?

Hi all,

It's been a while, I sold my TLS at the beginning of the year, been signed off since then.

Right then, I've got one chance to buy a bike that will keep me happy for a couple of years. The budget is not unlimited but is more than I've had to spend before.

I've had a few bikes before, nothing from this millenium though :)

I'm leaning towards a CBR1000RR from 2004/2005, from what I've read they are easy to ride, have reasonable power and should keep me entertained.

I'm also drawn to one of the bikes I've always wanted which is a newer ZX7R, I've had a few ZXR750s of various years and loved them, just never enough grunt.

I also liked my ZZR1100 which had enough grunt but not enough clearance.

Will I love the CBR as much as the 7R ?

Why would I choose one over other ?

Ideally what I want is someone to tell me the CBR is just like riding a more powerfull 7R, is it ?

I don't want the front in the air all the time, the TL was bad at this, I've discounted the ZX10r and GSXR1000 for the same reason (plus I've had 2 Suzukis now I didn't really get on with; TL, too much hard work to ride fast, not rewarding, just hard work. GSXR750 slabside, pegs too high, brakes randomly didn't, not enough grunt and smelt like old people)

Anyone ridden both or able to help me out ?

I have a 06 R1 you can have for cheap in a few weeks :D

A mate had the 04 Blade and it was stable. Took effort to wheelie. He has the 07 and it wheelies for no reason by comparison. He said in some situations, he preferred the stability of the 04. By all accounts it was a good all rounder.

As for the 7, it's entirely up to you as to whether you go newer or older. The 7's had a solid reputation for good handling, although they were quite heavy compared to the GSXR of the day...

If you say the GSXR750 didn't have enough grunt, then maybe the Blade is the better option... Once one is used to torque, it's a long way back to enjoying a less torquey machine...

It was an old GSXR750 (86) and pretty slow.

I used to have a 97 ZX7R and loved the bike...only complaint was to heavy and under powered compared to the rest.

The weight (I'm guessing) gave it a wonderfull cournering ability (so solid, seemed like nothing would shake it), but never really had the power I wanted (was thinking of a 9R engine in it).

Just got a R1 (streetfighter) and its just a more fun bike...more power then I'll ever need and tips into courners really well (but maybe not as stable as the 7R)

Personally, 7R is still my fav bike...it just looks awesome...and I can't push the R1 past the point I could push the 7R.

ive got a 05 cbr1000 (pic in my profile), easy to ride fast, enough power to keep up with any bike to 200+km.
the only thing i dont like about it is that it is too quiet, and i cant afford a new pipe :weep:
i havent ridden a zx7 so i cant compare tho.

I found my 05 Fireblade alot easier to ride than my mates late model ZX7R .....the stock 05 Fireblade front is easier to control than the 06/07 model. Most people go a tooth down on the front sprocket to make the bike more lively.

The ninja is longer and heavy bike. The steering is also heavier than the Fireblade but it will give you just as much fun on the twisties like a 600 and has enough grunt to keep up with the 1000's.

Well, first there isn't a "new" or "newish" or late model zx7r. The technology from 96 onwards to roughly 03 (depending on country) was almost identical (some minor revisions, ie, parts with a bad failure rate being re-designed). So really, you're comparing to 1996. Colours varied with year.

I had a zx7r, reasonably modified, for over a year. Fantastic handling, really taught me to ride the front end of a bike, but its heavy, you feel the weight into downhill off camber corners, but the confidence to stuff it right up into corners was great.

I haven't ridden any blades, but I upgraded to a 04 zx10. Nice things I wanted: Fuel injection - with all the benefits like easy starting etc, less weight, more power, more reliability from newer gear etc.

Depends how you want to ride it I guess. The zx7r never seems to win on paper (the gsxr750 had it at the time even) but there's something about it. I wouldn't go back, but I am better for owning one. If you wanted to ride it regularly, perhaps daily, I would take the fuel injection, but if you're rolling it out now and then to have a nice country ride, nothing wrong with a zx7r.

I'm going to admit a heavy bias on this one - I absolutely love the 7R - but I'd have to say it's probably more fun to ride in terms of grins per minute than any other bike I've ridden other than a 9R. And, you can stuff the early 9R engine into a 7R... which would quite possibly be my dream bike.

Blade is a good solid machine, but for me the 90s sport bikes are more fun for some reason. And the 7R, in green, is the prettiest bike ever made
