There is hope for us all - School bringing Bullrush back (http://www.stuff.co.nz/4704093a11.html)
This should be someone's election policy - bring back Bullrush. Rodney, are you listening?
It's just a shame we can't call it British Bulldog, like what it should be spoke.

Why was it banned? Was it the chance of getting injured or the fact that the kid getting picked is being discriminated against??

Why, namby pamby nanny state socialism, of course.
It's now not allowed for kids to climb trees or do any of the stuff we used to do that made us the courageous, daring, pillars of society we are.
I reckon it's a plot by the adventure tourism operators to ensure plenty of repeat customers. It's a wonder they don't offer such extreme adventure options as tree climbing, bullrush, riding bicycles without helmets, blowing shit up with fireworks, playing with power tools, camping overnight in tents, and going really really really fast (i.e., 102km/h).

Is it really namby pamby socialists banning all of this, or people so afraid of their arses being sued off since someone's poor darling child that's innocent of everything has got a scraped knee? Crazy mother's aren't exactly socialists, they're pretty keen on gas guzzling, skull crushing 4x4's.
Woo, bringing out the motherfuckin' stereotypes hard!

All is not lost when guys like Bruce McIntyre run schools...
"We believe that boys need to run around and play bullrush and climb trees and get scraped knees. It's about being real - as real as we can be,.."

Bullrush was banned at the school I first taught in as a year one teacher (1975) after the ten thousandth kid busted a collarbone and/or arm etc...the list of injuries was, quite truly, too high a price to pay...so the game was stopped. I doubt that anyone in a position of responsibility could let that sort of injury rate continue unless they were some kind of idiot. Believe it kiddies, the injuries were very very common and not just minor scrapes and bruises......the game had to be stopped.......this was in rural mid Northland BTW.....and they did play it on the asphalt come to think of it......among other places....

Yeah, every time change happens it's because of the socialist nanny state. I guess the nanny state that everyone bitches about should not pay for the sports related accidents (motorcycles as well) that fill the A&E's every weekend and everyone gets to pay for it through ACC. Why the fuck should I pay for someone's kids injury?
Yeah, make the people who have the accidents pay for it. Get rid of the health care system that the nanny state likes so much and make people pay their own way. Make profit the goal. See how they like that one. It'll shut them up really fast when they get to pay for it.
Can't we just return to the good old days when men were allowed to get drunk and beat their wives and kids and drive drunk and kill others. Shit, lets get back to the good, good old days when everyone was white, from the UK and you could lynch niggers and burn crosses.
Bunch of redneck assholes who obviously don't think about anything beyond their tiny limp dicks....

All the shit started when mum decided junior had to be dropped off at school everyday so they wouldn't have to wear wet shoes all day...from there things have got so pc FFS the kids are'nt allowed any fun.
Shit going on on the way to school an coming home from school was thewhole reason for being at school I thought...
Anyone seen a kid going to school in bare feet lately...not bloody likely..

So if we paraphrase the old Bell Helmet ad:
If you got a $10 head, get a $10 helmet...
Where does that leave you...?
Motu
24th September 2008, 22:50
With 10 $1 helmets!
If I only had to wear a helmet on cold or wet days my expensive ($75) helmet would last much longer.Anyway - you only need a helmet if you fall off,and good riders don't do that.Same as going 140kph on good straight roads - it's so safe why should I wear a helmet to do that? We need to raise the speed limit too.

So if we paraphrase the old Bell Helmet ad:
If you got a $10 head, get a $10 helmet...
You do realise that Bell produced that ad because their business was taking a drubbing due to the success of cheaply produced injection-moulded helmets, versus their expensive hand-made fibreglass ones? They spent a lot of money trying to discredit the likes of Shoei and Star, and make out that 'plastic' helmets were inherently dangerous. Nowadays, with proper testing, it isn't an issue, and injection-moulded and 'conventional' GRP helmets are both accepted, but the Bell propaganda lives on...
Doesn't work for me, as my head IS worth only $10 (or less), so any helmet is overcapitalisation, incluyding my curretn XR-1000 that I bought solely to be trendy and to match my bike's paint colour...

Nah, that ad originally ran in the late '70's when a Bell helmet was still a decent bit o' kit.

And yet it never had to be stopped in the century before that?
Kids' games follow fashions and sometimes they get out of hand. Instead of banning rough games like bullrush for ever, how about curbing the excesses as and when necessary? Eg: No bullrush on the asphalt? No bullrush for a few months while things calm down? No it had to be stopped because safety isn't only important, it's the only thing that's imporrtant.

Oh yes, you are right there BJ...:yeah:..e.g when I was teaching we had no safety stuff under the jungle gyms and adventure playgrounds - worked on the theory that it discouraged falling off if there was hard ground beneath. And funnily enough, very few kids busted their bums on those things....it is only in more recent times that things like OSH :tugger: have come along and turned everyone into victims....if some kid climbs your tree on your property and falls out of it and stubs his/her toe it is YOUR fault for having the tree, NOT the bloody kid's fault...that sort of mentality totally makes me PUKE!!! :puke: Dammit, we climbed everyone's trees with or without permission and if we fell out we got the hiding :spanking: for trespassing and being stupid enough to fall out anyway......nobody is expected to take responsibility for their own actions any more. F**king stupid in my opinion.....grrsnortrantraveoinksqueeeellllll!!!! :angry2:
