Mercury(II) thiocyanate (Hg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_%28element%29)(S (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur)C (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon)N (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen))2) is a chemical compound (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_compound). It was formerly used in pyrotechnics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrotechnics) for the long snake-like ash Pharaoh's serpent (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pharaoh%27s_serpent&action=edit&redlink=1) that forms when a pellet of this compound, often with a small amount of a sugar such as glucose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose) added to serve as supplemental fuel, is ignited. This is extremely dangerous because it produces poisonous mercury vapors.
Mercury(II) thiocyanate is made by reacting a mercury(II) salt (such as mercury(II) chloride (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury%28II%29_chloride)) with a thiocyanate salt (such as potassium thiocyanate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_thiocyanate)) in solution in water, producing a precipitate of mercury(II) thiocyanate.
there you have it...the compound they use is not pure mercury but mercury thiocyanate...
