Hi Guys,

There is a thread on this already but I cant find it, so here goes....

I have a pair of PVC waterproof pants that have unfortunatley left a desposit of plastic on my exhaust. Once it cooled down the material was baked on nice and hard. The pants are in the bin but what would be the best way to clean crap off your exhaust without munting the chrome. Any and all suggestions gratefully received.

Otherwise, ride safe and eat pies....!

Kero is also good at shifting stuff off exhausts, I've only used it on road spooge though so dunno if it would do melted plastic.

And don't use a toothbrush. Unless you like scratchy marks on your zorst.

I had a similar problem with bootlaces. If it's caked on hard, use a screwdriver to chip off the top layer, being careful not to go near the chrome. After that I'd suggest using petrol on a rag or, even better, CRC Clean-R-Carb.

Keep in mind autosol is abrasive and while you get an awesome awesome shine on the chrome.. regular and frequent use will eventially make the under plating show through.

True.

Getting the baked on shit off without using Autosol is best, using Autosol is a finishing part of the process.

Do a search of threads in relation to this.

Have you tried a rag when the zorst is hot?

Mineral Terpintine with some Linseed oil 2-1 mixed in , use a soft cloth and liberally apply the mixture,
Um this is plastic, oh shit, yeah, HER hair dryer!. Heat up the plastic and peal it off.

I just had word yesterday that a new Buell has been written off, due to a cleaner stripping off chrome and paint work:confused:. I think it may have been a citrus based cleaner of some sort, but I'll try and get some more info on it.
Be careful out there!

I've had good results with just a buffing wheel. I don't know how good the modern chrome is but the older jap stuff is thick and well applied and I have buffed a lot of crap off my pipes and other chrome parts like this. My SR400 had been fire damaged and I thought the chrome was history but the discolouration came off with the buffing wheel and it looks almost like new where earlier it had looked like shit. I'd start by removing the high spots with a razor (avoid touching the chrome as it will scratch easily), then try turps and maybe even thinners if you can be sure of keeping it off other parts, and finish it off with the buffing wheel if you have one or Autosol and elbow grease if you don't. You may aswell have a crack at it as you've nothing to lose really :)

some citrus based cleaners are very acidic and not good on alloy, if you are worried about autosol use a damp rag and use the autosol sparingly, ive been a car detailer for 10 years and never had a problem with autosol, but as was said if you use it all the time i would be careful and only using a very small amount on a damp cloth preferably
a terry toweling type of cloth, or you could try a chemical cutter like deox on your chrome.
Also a buff is good but please be careful just last week i had a customer with a brand new ss comodore ( black) who decided he wanted to shine his car up with a repco buff and some cutting compound,:nono: unfortunately his new black comodore is beyond repair, but nothing a complete repaint wont fix:shit:
