Hey

Got my basic handling test booked and looking to get a bike son after.

I'm 6'4- 6'5 and could probably get an exemption, I'm kinda keen just to get riding though and wanna buy a bike soon. I'm considering the new ninja 250 which I can kinda fit on (handle bars hit my knees on full turn).

Should i do the yards on a 250, or Would I be better off on something a little bigger? something like an er6 or versys? or would that be asking for trouble. I think i am mainly over my boy racer days (26 y/o).

Seems to be 50/50 call from people I speak to.

Thanks

Sounds like there is bugger all chance of getting a bike not on "The List" approved these days.

Give it a go though but don't buy the bike first in the hope of getting it approved.

Will it hurt to ask. Its buy a 250 and hit your knees, or wait 1-2 weeks longer and probably get something bigger.

Handle bars hitting your knees soundls like a good reason to get an exemption to me. Are you sure your not sitting on it wrong?

Send them in a picture of you crying when sitting on the most smallest 250 in the shop. And then a huge ass smile when sitting on a Ducati 999. :headbang:

Shoulda done a search to start with... none of the bikes on that list grab me by the balls like the little ninja!! ...not that i'v ridden it yet.

Hey mtroskill,

like CB ARGH mentioned get some photos of you on a a different range of 250's.

When I sent my exemption letter to MTA in I had a several photos of me on 250's as well as 650's 750's and even 1000's+. It helps by giving them an idea of just how big you are. As well as a personal letter from myself I also had Mike O'Sullivan from Mt Eden Motorcycles write me a letter to stress it wasnt just in practical for me but it was a safety issue had they made me ride a 250.

Worked like a treat and not only did I get exemption to ride a bigger cc rated bike I also got me Restricted phase wiped.

Hope that helps mate.

Have a look at a Hyosung, it may not grab your attention as much, but i'm 6'4", and fit mine sweet as.

When I had a sit on the 250R, it did feel smaller than the Hyo.

I probably could have got an exemption when I started, but decided not to, I figured that the 250 rule is a fairly sensible way of introducing me to the world of bikes, and as long as I had a 250 I was comfortable on, i'd give it a shot.

Other than that, check out some of the dual-purpose bikes, much more suited to a taller fella.

I am 6ft4 and sat on Hyobag and it felt good. Ended up with a ZZR which was a little small but fine to ride for nine months(6 for learner+3 with DDC over 25) while going thru the process. Not a long time to come to grips with two wheels before jumping on a big one once a bit of experience behind you.

Whats wrong with doing your time on a 250 Whateva. Have you been a rider before??? I found a need for speed within a few days of buying my 250 but at the end of the day I'm having a ball o the little thing. Every day I know my handling skills are improving and all of the other skills that you have to develope as you become a more confident rider.
The bigger the bike the bigger the mess when you don't have the skills developed as you should. Believe me you can make your self look silly on a small bike and even more so on a bigger bike. Do your wobbly test. get your learners licence, ride a smaller bike, develope your riding skills get your restricted then full licence and then go and get your bigger bike. Your a long time dead if you fuck up.
Over your boy racer days @ 26 No fucking way LOL
The boy racer in you never dies it just hybernates.

I'd like to see someone say no to you

mtroskill, the laws are changing, it seems you need a bike on the permitted list, and your circumstances have to be even greater than when asking on a Restricted license.

Yea.. i don't think i will bother. Mainly going to be commuting in town on shortish journeys.

If you see a tall guy revving the tits off a little 250 (hopefully a green ninja)....dont mock him pls!

If you can get a licence exemption, get a Suzuki GS500E. $8000 brand new.

but if the handle bars are hitting his knees at full lock, that could end up more dangerous than riding a higher cc bike. imagine trying to do a feet up u turn like he will have to do for the restricted? i think hes more looking for a bike thats bigger/longer in size, not engine size.

have you tried any cruisers? they often allow for longer legs better than 250 sprotsbikes.

Hyosungs do get a bad rap at times, but besides a couple of minor things on mine (flat battery, mainly) I've never had any problems. I ride an '07 GT250R and it's done about 24,000 k's. I had an '06 GT250R beforehand, and let me tell you the '07 is a far better bike. I had all kinds of problems with the '06 - dodgy fuel meter, fork seals blew twice, bike hated going into neutral etc.

I'm sure others have had problems with the '07 and '08 models but from my experience, each newer model that comes out seems to be an improvement on the latter.

A little update...

Got my learners on Monday, went looking Monday, Tuesday - new ninja 250r delivered yesterday.

Took it for a little spin yesterday and was scared shitless about binning it, which sorta recked it :( begun wondering whether it was such a good idea buying new. Came home after 30 minute *ride* around the carpark shattered...guess nerves does that to ya.

Just got back from my second spin and was far from perfect, but much better...enjoyed it for the 1st time..got up to a cracking 45ks and kept ahead of the yellow bus that was up my ass!!! managed not to get stuck and roll back down the little hill on my driveway.

I think a bigger bike would have been a baaad idea.

Thanks for coming back and telling us what you did.

Well done on the new bike - she looks a beauty!

Each ride gets easier, just get out there get some hours and miles under the wheels and you will start to worry less and enjoy more.

Congrats again!!!

EDIT: Remember new tires have to be scrubbed in!!!!

You will get more comfortable with the bike and enjoy it more, there is only one thing you need - more practise! The more you ride the better it gets.

If you can't ride a 125 you cant ride a 600.....its simple math really
Squid + cc = dead squid
the learners thing in NZ is bullshit - if i had my way L plates mean you were on a 125cc or less than 10kw.
And before i get flagged - no your all wankers.
You must learn to CRAWL before you can RUN. Same with bikes.
You need something will NO GUTS AT ALL to show you how to manage everything else on a bike (there is a bit more to it than just the throttle).

hang on on second thoughts all of you who think i'm wrong - go buy a hyabusa.....no really, im not kidding.
I getting really sick of all these threads from NOOBS who don't know the learn - you guys are better off dead to me than filling my bandwidth.

great to see brains out weighed.
bravado.good onya.
i spent 3 years on dad's cb125,on green belts and shingle roads before i got my learners(25+yrs ago).
i sorta still remember the lack of confidence at being on the road for a start.
imo no exemptions to the 250 rule.its only a short time, handle the jandle.learn to walk etc.
enjoy

Congrats! Nice bike, and nice colour. Yup, its good that you are afraid of it - thats a great respect and power balance to start your career on bikes. It never really changes - you are the newb and it is the master - keep it that way and you will get on just fine. ;)

I also got me Restricted phase wiped.I just applied for the same thing and they said "nope - do a defensive driving course and you can get your full in three months like everyone else can." Sigh. Oh well.

shouldn't have been so cocky to the examiner about seeing him in a couple of weeks when you passed your restricted.

He was not a happy chappy when he saw the 650 though. I told him "see ya in a couple of weeks for my full test" - he didn't look very impressed with that either. :2thumbsup

Curious as to what your excuse for not doing the R period was?

I told them I was on the open road alot and they actually suggested it to me - I didnt even know it was an option.
