View Full Version : How do you keep fit for riding?
KiwiKat
27th September 2008, 05:06
The older you get the less you move around.
One of the things I have noticed about getting back into riding is that there are muscles and joints that maybe need a bit of work. A simple example would be the neck. As I ride a sports tourer I lean forward slightly and my head isn't that used to turning around to look behind me? Obviously backs, shoulders and even ankles are affected.:woohoo::woohoo::sweatdrop:woohoo:
Are there exercise techniques that you use or recommend to get your body fit for riding?

No, seriously.
I'd say that just about any combination of strength and endurance training would do wonders for your average middle-aged couch potato motorcyclist.
Far too many people overcomplicate the issue. We are not Lance Armstrong, we are not an All Black, we do not need to spend hours analysing our training requirements.
Just run, cycle or swim to get your cardio capacity up and drop the fat off, and go to the gym and lift weights to gain strength. There is no secret other than actually doing it.
A measly five hours a week of intense exercise of any form whatsoever would transform the lives of 90% of the people on this forum.
Right, sun's up, I'm off for a pushbike ride.

This is why I ride a cruiser. No need to be doing push ups while you ride.

I find going to the fridge myself rather than getting one of the kids to get my next beer helps.
Seriously though, I do bugger all exercise and need to get off my arse but I don't have any problems riding.

Yep, cycling is pretty darned good. I have knee damage so can't run but cycling does the biz.
The alternative of course is to ride your bike of the powered kind LOTS. That's all I used to do in preparation for the Grand Challenge and Southern Cross endurance rides.

It's all the green stuff that keeps dribbling behind.
Seriously though, I didn't see any threads that cover this stuff. I believe it is relevant because its the 'flexible' riders that have the best control. As with any sport there will be some exercises that are more beneficial than others, in particular in the back and neck area. It also aids recovery time when you momentarily hit the ground (and I found I can still do a forward roll).

This involves cutting out the drinking of alcohol (a little), using neck muscles (a lot) to keep the head from flipping backwards, core strength (Suck it in) so to ease the strain on wrists and shoulders ! With i'm sure, the odd pucker (ladies call it pelvic floor) (you know what im talking bout here) thrown in !

Apart from the above, riding time and stretching helps especially around the lower & upper back, glutes and hammys. Muscles tighten up if you havent been active on a bike for awhile.
Neck and shoulder pain is common if you're riding position is sports bikish and is usually a sign that your abs and lower back need some work. Direct neck and shoulder work may help but would argue that its a temporary fix as your core should hold your torso up rather than your weighting your hands.
For joints you might want to consider mineral supplementation... Glucosamine or chrondrotin is ready available at the chemist and helps to strengthen joints and rebuild cartiladge

If you are having back pain it would help to give the stomach muscles a work out (not the `stomach:whistle:`...the `muscles`). because your tummy helps support your back.
At night or morning do some simple stretches and crunches..it will help.
As we get older I think if you don't keep some level of fitness up, it gets harder to get back into any physical activity. And injuries are much harder to recover from...I know this!!
I swim and also play Inline hockey once a week:bash: (like Ice Hockey on RollerBlades), its a great workout and lots of fun. Any `skaters`out there interested we have a very good Masters team here in the Manawatu.:woohoo:

Having a fucked back, i know i'm gonna suffer when i get back on the bike (after 3 months of not doing many grunts)
The girls at the rehab gym worked so had at getting me in shape too lol
Will try and explain the technique to do ya core but its gonna sound weird haha !
Thought this chick was gettin kinky on me when she first showed me but if ya lay on the floor on ya back knees up, arch ya hips so ya back is touching at all points, push like ya trying to shit and breath at the same time ! (Kinky huh)
If ya poke three fingers into ya side just above ya hip it pushes in right ? now if ya push like ya constipated (sucking ya arse in so ya dont shit yaself) your fingers should get pushed outward ! This shows ya got the core engaged ! Another way of describing it (not as kinky) is if your driving a car cornering hard on an old bench seat holden with crap suspention, if yr core aint engaged you will end up in the p[assenger seat !
Do that every day b4 ya leap out of bed even, then after a week ya do it on the floor with boots on and lift ya legs, do that for a week then add weight to ya feet !
If ya practice ya breathing while ya doing it, it becomes natural and you will be able to (push like ya constipated but suckin it in so ya dont shit yaself) do this while walking talking doing dishes, drinkin beer whatever ! After a couple of weeks you'll be doing it subconciously on the bike !
Yr neck well thats just ride hardening !

Some really good advice coming through thanks.
Why is it assumed that weight is always an issue. There are different levels of fitness but a lot of it really is about joint mobility.
I like the idea of inline hockey. Might talk about that. Skipping can be another good one but watch the landing.

Nobody's necessarily bothered about weight gain or loss, but perhaps you'd be surprised at how much an increase in cardio capacity helps even traditional 'power' work. It certainly helps motorcycling. Being able to keep fresh and work over a couple of hours at a steady moderate heart rate instead of blowing yourself out to redline all the time makes a huge difference to performance.
Gosh, I'm hungry...
:D
Re. joint mobility, I should note that about a decade (very on and off) of recreational lifting and cycling and being lazy about stretching (as is unfortunately customary amongst lifters and cyclists...) has left my hip flexors and knees etc tighter than a gnat's arse, and now I can't ride sprotbikes for more than an hour or two without ending up with significant leg pain. Never any issues above the hips while motorcycling, but there y'go.
So I guess it does pay to be careful about balancing one's training toward whole-body functionality.

Pilates would probably be good but I found nothing sorts the core and neck out more than just getting out and riding. Probably helps that I commute 20km each way.
A sad lack of open road riding over this shitty winter has stuffed my legs. More than an hour on twisty roads (where I've moving my weight) and I really feel it the next day. Figure a few more rides and I'll be back to bike fit though.
Track days are a whole new level of punishment for the legs so am planning to spend a lot of time in the gym on the bike and doing long squats before I try get down to Taupo at the end of October.

Latin dancing, good for working up a sweat, but takes about 6 months to get to a point where you're getting good exercise from it. Swimming, but it's dead boring. Running, but not only is it dead boring, but the knees hate it. Probably start on weights soon, not stupidly big weights to get stupidly big arms, just for toning... boring, but at least you can do it at home.
As much as doing stuff that is good for you, I recommend doing less of stuff that is bad for you... e.g. Spend more time in the garage working on bikes than sitting in front of the television. If I weren't married, I'd probably just sell the TV... should sell it anyway (or push it off a wharf)... thieves of time televisions.

Go do a seasons work in a Vineyard, orchard, nursary or such like.
Apart from a wicked good physical work out, you GET PAID to do it.
I do in one day, the same as weeks workout in a gym.
Im 51, I have a 6 pack, no joint problems, no excess body fat Bla Bla Bla.
I have been told by a fitness specialist I very fit for my age.
But Im still going grey and bald!
Do I do specific exersizes? No
I sit around at home, drink beer, mow the lawns once a week, drink more beer, eat chocolates, Ice cream, pies lots of pies, drink more beer, chips, and when I can Burger King. Outside of my employment I am a Lazy fucker!
The key for me is having a job that is Physicaly demanding.
Pity the wages dont reflect the effort put in.
But then money is more important to most than quality of health and life style.

Partner and I are Ballroom Dancers - have been for the past fifteen years. One of the best ways to get fit that I have used.....(AND you get your hands on lotsa nice ladies...hurhurhur......)
We are quite serious about it though - we compete (with some success) and train five days a week......I would have to say that of all the sports I have participated in (and there have been quite a few), this has taken the most effort to achieve success in - mostly because you are not just working on your own - you have to work two people together as one...easier said than done in practice.....when in training mode I run about six kilos lighter than when not training.....it does wonders for abdominal strength (ya hafta hold your gut in) as well as leg strength.....fixed my dicky knees with added quad fitness.....can recommend it.....

ive slowly but surely been turning into a sack of crap lately, mostly due to an arsed based job. i decided last week its time to make an effort to get back into some sort of shape. biggest problem ive got is that i hate walking / running / riding a (push) bike outside. it bores the shit out of me. so i got an indoor trainer thing to bolt my mountain bike up to so i can ride it in front of the tv watching MotoGP dvds. i also have a swiss ball and some weights. you dont need a lot of weight to have a decent workout so you dont need a lot of room to store it all.
if you dont want to go that far just get a swiss ball. you can get them pretty cheap from trademe and they work well. im also kicking it all off next week by doing the lemon detox program for a week to get rid of all the crap in my system.
it seems stupid but its taken 32 years for me to figure out how important my health is.

But seriously....pole dancing???? I hear it's good for the upper body and core muscles. Not that I actually know from experience though.
It's easy enough to do little stretches, bouncing on the saddle, small neck tilts etc while you're riding. Probably the mental fitness is more of an issues for some people!

jrandom is not quite old enough to be a born again anything really. Just a slip of a lad who is gonna come down here and give this old fart the learn on a pushie ('cept mine is all handbuilt European stuff and his will prolly be a made in Taiwan frame with Japanese cmomponentry on it!).
Although I haven't been as active on a pushbike as once I was the sheer weight of miles that I did on racing bikes (pushies) means that I am attuned to a VERY forward leaning posture (Backside about 15cm higher than my hands). I find sports bikes (with engines) VERY upright. My wife used to have a GSX750F and I felt it was like sitting on a sofa it was so laid back...put too much weight on the base of my spine. Only rode it occasionally.
The trick to sportsbikes is to use your abdominal muscles to support and move your upper body. I don't put much weight on my wrists at all, even on long trips.

To be honest, Im a firm believer in 'your born with x number of heart beats'... why do ANYTHING that will speed them up?
Masturbation? Well if you alternate hands at least you'll develop balanced forearm muscles?
As for the comment about limited heartbeats...All I can say (in relation to getting jiggy with it at least) I'm here for a good time not a long time honey :sunny:

I find that skateboarding keeps me quite fit, though the older you get, the longer the injuries take to heal.

How old is the oldest skateboarder you know.
I always found that My skateboarding entailed me sitting on the ground. Rollerblades are on order for Xmas.

Nah, as long as you're right handed you are developing the throttle wrist well - that's the important one!

Choices: Drop a bike and pick up a beast or Don't drop it and pick up a chick. My pick would be to excercise the thighs not the abs and pick up the chick rather than take the fall with the beast.

The trick to sportsbikes is to use your abdominal muscles to support and move your upper body. I don't put much weight on my wrists at all, even on long trips.
Yeah - you got it in one Jim......+1 there mate.....

There`s a group of us who are on the wrong side of 40 that still skate ramps, bowls, and when available, pools.

There's no wrong side of 40. Youth is an interpretation. It's the bloody reflexes, eyesight and hearing that really get annoying.

And the fact that your hair starts growing really fast.
The down side of that is that it grows out your ears, nose and eyebrows, It vacates the top of your head exposing the solar panel for the sex machine that then goes into hyper drive. No female wants to know you cos you are bald with hair forests above your eyes, in the middle of your ears and under your nostrils. And then you get fat...:crybaby:

Nothing more irritating than the born-again [whatever].
jrandom is not quite old enough to be a born again anything really.
But he's been through a (temporarily) life-changing experience!
So tell me, jrandom, when you're actually allowed to ride your motorcycle again, are you still going to be raving at us all about how health-giving and enjoyable it is to ride the pushbike? Or are you going to turn into just another couch potato who needs a 1400 cc motor to haul his fat arse around?

I think the answer to that is obvious! But it's more recliner than couch.

Mainly I exercise for riding my off road bikes but it works well for the road bike too.
Bench presses are good, they strenghten your wrists and shoulders.
Cycling hard is real good for toning up your bum muscles, makes it so much easier to sit on a bike with an arse that has a bit of muscle on it, and good for your thighs too.
I find if I get sore around the shoulders I pull back on the handle bars for a while seems to stretch my neck back muscles.
I guess any exercise is good, the older your get the more you need to do.

I run for general fitness - about 15 - 30kms per week.
3 gym sessions per week with bicep and tricep work for handle bar stability and control.
Most importantly, ab and lower back strengthening for good posture, especially during harder acceleration and braking. Also using your back takes any strain off your wrists (not that I have that problem with the upright VTR seating position, but for my next bike I might).
Dave.
