do you offer guided tours during the weekend???

It was good fun despite a little bit of wind .
The only think with weekends is that Sunday is closed so it can only be Sat and usually there is a fair bit of people till the gate, after that is very cool and apparently u can go a fair bit ...

Dane and I used to blast around there most weekends, and if you get it right with the tides you can get through cave bay and around to the cable station at Terawhiti...but you gotta get the tides right and I reckon yid be wanting to know how to handle them big bikes second-nature like! Our DR-Z 400's were just right for it (but less "just right" riding the motorway to the city and back).
Keep us posted on any other Welly rides with pics - dare you to get one of the GS at the top of Terawhiti Hill!:gob:

Awesome photos!
We've been out there with a mate of ours a couple of times (a colleague of his has a batch out there) and it's always been dark on the way back out - so an oldie with zimmer frame gets along faster than me.
marks it would be pretty hard to get lost along there.
It's a great place to ride if you don't mind gravel. I believe one day is each weekend vehicles are banned, can't remember which day.

Have riden out there on an old IT 250, around to cable bay, about 25 kms, when the wind gets up you find out about sand storms, if you want to ride around to cable bay allow extra fuel, as the soft sand will chew abit extra gas.

Sounds like a great idea.
I'm not here this Thursdsay ( turning 21 ), but if people are keen we could head down another day.
Pampa and I usually leave around 11:50 and get back to the office around 13:30

The trip to the beach from our place is 10' / 15' so is about half an hour commuting ... the rest is fun .
I did a few Ks around the cost 3/4 weekends ago an back home (Upper hutt) in about 1:45 and from that at least 45 mins where commuting. So for a normal office day is not bad at all to swap BNZ food court by red rocks.
Would be good to see the KTm on the beach :2thumbsup

Hi there. Red rocks is awesome but I've had it with mountain biking through soft sand in gale winds :weep: so was looking at getting a motorbike! But I'm not sure if I can just get a dirt bike (I have a trailer to get it to the quarry) or whether I have to get a dual-purpose road-registered bike? Can't seem to find the answer so hoping you can help?! cheers, Hik

hi hikky boy - i guess the answer to your Q depends on what you're wanting to do - if your goal is just to ride areas like Akatarawa Forest / Karipoti and you're happy to trailer your bike to the start then you don't need a road registered machine.
If on the other hand you want to take part in adventure rides that typically entail travel on public roads including gravel then you'll need a road legal machine.
You don't say whether you already have a motorcycle licence. If you're a learner you're currently limited to a machine of no more than 250cc capacity.
Check with New Zealand Transport Agency or Ministry of Transport for more info about licencing conditions.
good luck - have fun and ride safe

I saw a post somewhere recently that I seem to remember was saying that the beach/4wd track at Red Rocks is technically a public road and thus rego etc needed AND that apparently there have been occasional enforcement checks out there! So beware!
I love it out there - wicked fun in the week but shame they don't ban the SUV's on Saturdays!!! :oi-grr:

Is that the only way to get to Terawhiti then? Or can you get there from Makara somehow? ( or is that cheating? LOL!)

15th December 2008, 09:26
Yep you're right with the rego checks - never got pinged on it though. As I understand it, all beaches are public roads ?
As for Terawhiti Stn I used to get permission from the owner and we would generally come in from the beach and do a lap around the station then get up Terawhiti Hill itself (think I've got some pics on my album from memory..).
Great place, not to be abused though. I'd normally sling a rifle and use that as my reason for wanting to come in - to go and whack a goat or two for dog tucker. Course we would always get distracted and focus on the riding.

Hey man, Haven't ridden there for a year now, but there used to be heaps of guys on MX bikes would just ride it. Technically should be licensed and regoed / wof but the checks were seldom.
This is where I learnt to ride on my DR250, I'd recommend shelling out of a road legal bike if you can afford it - whole new world without restraints!

definitely need more practice on that terrain

Down the other side
This is on the way back, I was so shagged from that sand I forgot to take any photos
Eddie spinning up the rear
There's some pretty deep and loose rock sections on that ride, had a few sudden direction change moments :)
That sand is unfinished business ( except for Dean who was zooming around in circles )
another go is in order me thinks.

Was nice to finally get a chance to get out on a ride with/meet some of you! It was good company and I think fun had by all! It was certainly WAY more fun than the ride home on SH1/SH2 into that wind!
Thx guys, will look forward to the next one!

thanks for taking the trouble to take pics and post them.
a fun evening - good company and support for one another
I think we were all reminded how much 'attitude' determines our success or failure in tricky situations.
Dane's familarity with the place and confidence certainly shone through! helped of course by the relative weight of the DRZ
Happy Christmas - look forward to riding with you all again soon - cheers Aslan

I have maybe a dozen more photo's to add however I copied them to a usb key this morning and then left the usb key at home.
Red Rocks is now unfinished business for the 2 GS's at least and a rematch will no doubt be scheduled sometime in the new year.

Whilst not wanting to but in on your interest in going back to Red Rocks, just want to let you know the following in case its of interest:-
Tomorrow(Tuesday 23/12) Ben and I are going up to the private land at the end of the road up to the Welly wind turbine from Brooklyn if you or anyone else would like to join us! The more the merrier!
I don't know the name of the place yet as it will be my first ride up there(sorry!) but it's the one that charges you $20 access fee; am sure you guys know the place I mean!
Should be at the access gate for about 10.30/45 ish. Could meet any interested parties at the Caltex on Happy Valley Road just south of the main crossroads/traffic lights in Brooklyn at that time.
Plan is to ride our butts off and be done prior to the commuter traffic leaving Welly.
If for some reason we can't get on the land then we'll head to Red Rocks as an alternate plan I reckon.

Ha, ha yeah I'm trying mate! Still have to pay attention when talking with someone with a "stronger" accent with all that cross-pronouncing of vowels going on! If a Kiwi lass asks me if I want "sex", I don't really wanna be saying "six of what?"!!!!

On the Makiro ride the other week, just after all those nice people
helped me extract the GS from the ditch.
I fell off again, only this time I managed to smack my shin quite hard on probably the foot peg or engine armour.
Anyway the usual hole in the shin and subsequent bruising expectedly occurred
but after a week hadn't gone away.
In fact it started swelling, moving down my leg and going numb,
with side orders of flashing pain :eek5:
So MagicFairy suggested I go to the Doc :doctor:, who said infection, take pills, avoid movement.
Turns out shin infections are quite nasty, due to the poor blood supply in that area and I have to be careful.
So no rides for me :crybaby:
Now im stuck on the couch, with my leg up (and on fire).
And the annoying thing?
The annoying thing is that I had a perfectly good set of shin guards that MagicFairy had just adjusted for me
and I didn't put them on

No, the annoying thing is Ill have to be nice to him for days, running back and forth getting food, drinks, laptops and entertainment.
And walk the dog, do the Xmas grocery shopping and all the other bollocks that Christmas brings by myself.
All because "I don't want to wear my new shin guards, that you adjusted for me, on this ride...in case they rub, it is a big days ride" :Pokey:

I had a work accident some years ago that required reconstructive surgery to my left heel and learning to walk again. Was out for over 6 months with ops, lying around with my foot higher than my heart etc.
Infection in the ankle area very bad if not dealt with properly, i had some worrying times for a while. I guess the shin area is the same for the same reasons.
Take care, keep it clean and do what the doctor man says.
