I've been at the Hospital with Warren this afternoon and evening. The good news is there's nothing life threatening and all injuries will heal. However, he's pretty busted up and will likely spend a few days in one of the 24/7 critical care type wards before being sent out to a general ward.

Pleased to hear his injuries are not life threatening. Heal well mate! Slow but sure should be your aim for recovery.

saw him tonight .. he was quite lucid and "with it"
when the drugs wear off he's gonna be sore for a long long time .. .a long time !!! longer than I care to think about .. I guess this is the "trying" bit of being a friend .. being a friend when the chips are "really" down
the bike is well .. how do i put it ... in need of parts ... well maybe just one important part .. the honda bit.
So if anyone has a spare honda that they can donate to warr, he would be very grateful.
thanks for pics carver, and a top notch effort today ... deep down you're a caring guy eh ? ?

For any one who’s interested in donating parts to fix his VFR, here’s a short list of some basics we’ll be needing;
Two wheels, Two tyres, Fairing, Front lights, and rear lights, wiring loom, Triple clamp, front forks, brakes, gauges, seat, tank, motor, gearbox, frame, swing arm, shock, CDI, handle bars, levers, footpegs, exhaust system, can
Oh and I think he may need a new battery
Any donations to Terminals place please
Thanks

Just had an update.
He's out of Emergency and is now in 1 of the 24/7 high dependancy units. Visiting is restricted to 2 people at a time so I'd suggest people hold off visiting until he's in a ward where visitor numbers aren't restricted.

Riding with The Moron Few, there would have been excessive speeds and much danger...
I'm guessing ~65kmh and a corner somewhere?
He was probably laughing so hard at "te few" and fell off.
TerminalAddict
28th September 2008, 13:52
it was more than likely a rear tyre blow out on the exit of a corner, which eventuated in a high side
I spent a bit of time pacing up and down the crash site, looking at the marks on the road, and picking bits of bike up
edit: BTW .. carver showed responsibility and maturity, and dealt with the scene very well, and communicated well with those that cared back in Hamilton

I guess that with all the "Mormon Few post" about racing on the roads and how cool it is - People get an idea that you are all riding like idiots on the road and are accidents waiting to happen. Some people dont have any time or sympathy for people who act like that. So to this end its almost as if comments taking 'digs' are a result of the Mormon few marketing program.
As they say - its all fun until someone loses an eye.
Regardless - I hate to see anyone get hurt - and I genuinely hope that he has a full and speedy recovery.
If its any help when he is ready I should be able to provide a old laptop I can give him so at least he can get KB when in hospital - if this is of any use - one of his friends can just PM me and I will arrange to meet up with them with it.

thats right, read it again.
it was/is fun to ride fast, on they way home i did 140 - 200kph in the rain through the gorge....and loved every minute of it, plus 2nd gear standup wheelstands to redline on the CBR 600, also in the wet.
it was so unforgettable
however
warr is a cautious experienced rider, and there is no way he would have been doing anything wreckless, we all ride at our own pace.

To kill some speculation all I can say is we won’t really know what happened until Warrens memory fills in some gaps. All the poor guy can remember is his back wheel slipping gripping and slipping and gripping, he was thinking he needed to stop and check his rear tyre.
Going by the marks on the road, Terminal and I can only make some observations such as;
Nothing about the corner indicates it’s a contributor to the accident; it’s an easy sweeper.
The white lines were thin, dry and presented no real issue
There’s a shit load of tyre stuck to a cats eye then the black skid marks start – then the marks where it high sided
The bike obviously skidded along, gauging a line along the tar – coming to rest on the side of the road followed by a flame, then burnt.
Poor bugger

Poor bugger was probably a good safe rider and taking no chances and it still went pear-shaped.
But the old story holds true - "lie down with dogs and you'll get up with fleas"
(Not saying you have fleas Carver but you get my drift re the M.F.)

This question about accidents has been discussed many times before. Basically, the people that need to know, ie family etc will be told. Anyone not told directly by those close to the person don't need to know. Often it isn't appreciated by family members. So on this particular issue it is ALWAYS best to err on the side of caution because anything else can lead to incredibly inappropriate speculation.

I think apart from some general gist of what happened any detailed account of the accident can wait until the rider in question (Warren in this case) feels like telling the tale. We may be curious, but we have no right to know anything. Hopefully Warren has a full recovery, I don't know him but it sounds like he is a good guy and doesn't deserve to have this happen to him.

Hey this is warrs daughter, thanx for all the good wishes. I told him that there was a thread about him and he was stoked to hear that. He is getting his wrists operated on tomorrow i think, both are broken and a few hand bones are broken. His ribs down one side are all fractured, along with broken collar bone and broken shoulder blade. The story seems to be that his rear tyre blew when he hit a cats eye, then he skidded for about 20m, got thrown off and knocked unconcious. Thanx to the dude that was first on the scene, and big ups to my brother who had to wait there all day for the bike to be picked up, ur a legend.

Hi, good to hear from you. Sorry to hear about the damage your dad had and hope he heals good and well. Question, does he have insurance on the VFR? Is there anything we can do to help?
For example if you put up an bank account number etc, I am sure I and a few others are more than keen to donate to the Warr recovery fund.
I have ridden with him a few times in the past and in the last grand challange.

My VFR was the same. Of all the bikes I've owned, it was the only one to give me grief:
- Low-sided it on the way to work when an 'invisible' (couldn't see it till I inspected the road carefully afterwards) kamikaze softdrink can positioned itself under my front tyre on tip-in, trashing my new jacket, breaking the front brake lever, and re-damaging my shoulder.
- A kamikaze pedestrian leaped out in front of me a few weeks later, causing $3800 of damage that she had to pay for. Oh - and breaking her leg in two places.
- Just got it back from the painters, and a kamikaze woman changed lanes without indicating, causing me to drop it on the road.
- A kamikaze driver u-turned into me on my way to work, causing mucho ($6800) 'cosmetic' damage.

Don't know you Warren, but the Ducati Owners' Club here in Auckland is wishing you a speedy recovery.
We passed the scene minutes after the incident. The bike was in flames and Warren was on the sidelines being attended to.....very sobering.
Although, not as dramatic as your accident was a member of the club that had a similar spill. The bearings froze up. I thought that could be the case, after reading some of the threads when "gripping and sliding" was described.
Some sort of lock up anyway.
Again, all the best to you and your's for a speedy recovery.
And one for your mates who support you.....you must be an alright sort of guy!

Great to hear Warr came out of this in a better state than his bike!
A point on the below.
Would the KB community gain in the knowledge that cat eyes can cause blow outs? Or should we keep it secret, and let another person learn this lesson?
(if that was the cause)

We've already had that argument plenty of times in the past and nothings changed.
Family > A bunch of people the person has never met

Don't know you Warren, but the Ducati Owners' Club here in Auckland is wishing you a speedy recovery.
We passed the scene minutes after the incident. The bike was in flames and Warren was on the sidelines being attended to.....very sobering.
Although, not as dramatic as your accident was a member of the club that had a similar spill. The bearings froze up. I thought that could be the case, after reading some of the threads when "gripping and sliding" was described.
Some sort of lock up anyway.
Again, all the best to you and your's for a speedy recovery.
And one for your mates who support you.....you must be an alright sort of guy!
what kind of bike were you riding?

Just an update, he got his left wrist/hand operated on yesterday for about 4 hrs or something. I think they put pins or plates in his hands. Iv heard that hes doing better today, hes still in the high dependency unit tho, and only allowed two visitors at a time. I am going to see him today and will let u know how hes doing after that. Im going to show him this thread on my laptop so he'll be able to read all your well wishes, im sure that will brighten his day

Well i have been up to see dad (warr), he was pretty sleepy but doing a lot better than last time i saw him. He was sitting in a chair for a bit this morning, and they are going to move him to a ward either today or tomorrow i think. He has pins in his left hand now, and at some stage they are going to put a metal rod along his right arm and screw that into his bone to keep that wrist healing straight. So for anyone that wants to visit, i wud say wait a few more days so that hes not so tired and stuff. I read him some of the stuff that you guys have written and he had a bit of a laugh and appreciates all the well wishes. So thanx for all of that and i will keep u posted.

It's good to hear of his progress.
He'll have to stay away from x-ray machines, metal detectors, hadron colliders, and large magnets.
Or are they rebuilding him better than he was before, with lots of race-spec titanium? That could be bad, as he'd have to buy a race bike.
Tell him to heal well, and if he doesn't pay attention, give him the bash from all us concerned folks at KB.

Ouch, ouch and ouch!
Sorry to hear of Warrens off - not nice - but at least he's mendable.
Still have visions of Warren on the XJ sitting calm and virtually upright, in the middle of a bunch of sportybikes who were at all the racey angles in the middle of a corner, and giving away nothing in terms of cornering speed or control.......:Punk:
Get well soon,cobber!

Mate, from what we saw on the weekend he's going to glow in the dark. They were almost following his bed around with a portable X ray machine.

But its a different thing on the tough gravels of NZ roads
Hope it hasn't put you off getting back on a bike again

The last time I saw Warren he was very quickly and smoothly leaving me behind somewhere just west of Hamilton
wait it was at the Chartwell mall I was telling him I had another bike and wanted to go for a ride.
Although I don't know many people who have been riding for a long time he's the fastest rider I know and without the ego of people half as fast as him.
All the best with your recovery Warren, I'll pay a visit in a few days.

Went up to see Warr this arvo in Ward2 and was pleased to see plenty of life in the old boy
He was actually on his feet yesterday too moving down the corridor at snails pace which is bloody impressive, no doubt the morphine pump was helping with mobility. Fed him some of the banter from the forum posts which seemed to be well received.
To add insult to injury though and as if he isnt in enough discomfort the bloody plumbers are busy right next door to his room whacking away with a jack-hammer :headbang: Had a laugh about that at Warr's expense.
Basically I was impressed by how well he appeared to be taking things. On the road to recovery I suspect. Dont bother taking too much reading material in if you go for a visit coz his fingers and writsts wont be up to much page turning. Maybe we could put in some $$ for a pretty nurse to sit beside him reading him some bed-time stories :doctor:

Arr I finally found this thread!!
Many thanks to those who looked after me following my accident and especially to the Matarangi First Response Ambulance crew who helped sort things out on the road-side.
My thanks too to Carver who was the first on the scene and for helping notify those back at home and keeping everything together post crash.
The Auckland Air Ambulance crew for getting me to Waikato Hospital. The list of good people who use their skill and expertise in ways to mend broken bodies is long, but a big thankyou from me.
All the reasons why and what-ifs, sorry I can shed no further details. I have no recollection of anything to do with the crash. My rear tyre was not new and was to be changed for my next warrent.
But it would appear to have failed resulting in a massive high side.
My Quasi gear did everything it was supposed to do, including the back protector which I'm sure minimized spinal and abdomen damage. Sadly its all a little second hand now, but money well spent.
My injuries ... makes for impressive reading in my hospital discharge report..
Left ribs front 8, left ribs back 4.
Shoulder, actual joint is intact but 3 bones around it are broken.
Left hand must have got crushed, it has a diagonal fracture line running from my little figure knuckle back to the wrist.
Right hand, wrist broken and dislocated.
Pain hasnt been too bad, just each day better than the previous.
Instead of burying my bike in a landfill I put it on TM for anyone with a VFR 750F that could use some parts. So far bidding is hot!! and I may even get $2 for it !!

Been a while since this thread had anything written in it, but today I returned to my accident site.
Wish now I had gone there sooner ... as in made a special trip as soon as I was able.
Emotions were heightened as I remembered the last few corners before my Sep 08 accident.

Clearer ... No not at all. I tried to imagine how I could have lost it on the left-hander. Not really much of a corner at all.
There were still some gouges on the road coming from the direction I was traveling. Deep ones where the bike must have hit hard, still lots of plastic in the ditch back up the road where the fairing must have exploded.
The souvenirs of interest was taken from the point of fire. A previous molten bit of frame & a piece of fairing with a precious 1/4 turn zeus fastener !
Best conclusion I can draw is rear tyre loss of adhesion to road from sudden loss of pressure by either blowout or rolled it on the rim due to lack of adequate pressure causing uncontrollable 2 wheel slide and subsequent dramatic high-side.

Is the cats-eye still a suspect?
Is the cats-eye still a suspect?
Too much time has passed to determine where the slide started. Unless there could be further evidence I suspect the cats-eye just happened to be in the way when the bike was sliding. Contact with a non-movable object like that could have contributed to the mayhem but I feel it is unlikely to have started it.
