The coro loop is a ride around the coromandel peninsula starting about Kopu (after the long one lane bridge) it usually heads up towards coromandel town and then across and over to Whitianga then down to Tairua and from there one can either start heading back to Auckland over Kopu hill, or continue over to Whangamata and down the coast even more towards Tauranga, then finally back up to Aucks.

The shorter version usually would take anywhere between 3 and 6 hours depending on stops. It's quite a few k's!

An SMC ride of the coro would look towards the 5-6 hour mark.

GSXR Trace

Couple of questions from another n00b!

1) Would this be a good trip to destroy my ride-virginity on? I'm not a particularly flash rider or anything, still on Learners (although I should probably put a plate back on, but how else can I go on the motorway to/from work )
2) How many k's is it in total? (I suck at gaugeing fuel, I normally panic when I do more than 100km in one go)

[Also I took the liberty of checking the weather forecast:

Metservice - Increasing cloudy periods, freshening northwesterlies

Couple of questions from another n00b!

1. If you ride in the slow group which it looks like I'll be leading, I can assure you that it will be okay. We'll look after you - my own first country ride was a not-so-slow Coro loop - and we'll be setting a learner-friendly pace, since we have a number on the ride (Yui, Zim etc).

Full Coro is around 600? We're only doing a half Coro, but don't worry - your GN will easily get you from gas station to gas station and then a bit.

That is what I was thinking myself - I figured it'd be decided at the Friday Chiller though.

Leaving 8-9am would be my own personal preference. Avoid too much traffic (as it is the school holidays).

That sounds sweet. Yeah I was intending to buy a 750 - largely due to being better suited for NZ roads, but then the 600 came up cheap so went for it. Yeah i had planned that i would need a full up by about thames and probably another one on teh way back. but happy to keep an eye on it and take it as it comes!
I have had plenty of open road experience, so not worried about doing full loop in that respect, but just thinking time wise - and the amount of work i have to do - the half loop is probably better for this weekend!

Check your bike over beforehand.

Adjust your chain, check your pads, take any tools you might need in a backpack, cellphone, camera etc. Some cash in case your EFTPOS bounces and you need gas etc.

Any non-material aspects will be covered before we start riding. :)

hehe... so jaffa. it'll be a half coro for the learners then, i take it? not a bad idea. i think it's best to ease into the crazy twisty route as a learner than to dive headfirst without any protection - so to speak.. so a half coro as for the first time there sounds smart enough.

i've only ever done a half coro... kopu hill is my favourite road, so if we do a full loop i propose a figure 8 track :D

Yeah I was intending to buy a 750 - largely due to being better suited for NZ roads, but then the 600 came up cheap so went for it.

how so?

ok I'm totally coming! First ride time! Will be good to meet all you guys :D

Anyone got any tips/do's and don'ts for a group ride virgin?

1. Know your limits.
2. Make sure your bike's prepared e.g. chained lubed, topped up with oil, etc
3. Have the right gear

Everyone looks after each other on the ride so you won't be left behind. The most important thing is to relax and enjoy the ride!

half coro bites, no offense
the only good part of coro is the loop koopu end to end, not incl. thru whitianga, but just all the hmega twisty twiSTEEZxzzxxXXxXooOXo!!

Well i have been led to believe that hte 750 has more torque at less revs compared to the 600, therefore better for winding roads and not ringing the neck off the bike as much.
BUt also because it has better mileage to a tank, I can only just get from new plymouth to taumaranui (with petrol light flashing for a good 15 kms)

message to the slow group. just got off the phone with dad. turns out he's not kee on me riding the coro tomorrow, even in the learner crew, with the 20 odd ppl that'll most likely be there. they're still really stressed dealing with the fact that i ride a bike, and the idea of a 300+km ride is torturing their minds!

i'm gutted about it, but i'll have to sit this ride out. after the exams, something will surely happen, right. i've convinced them to let me do the next big ride, so i'll sure as hell be there then! no bull, and no "parental discretion" required!

In my books, yours shouldn't count as a crap ride - you knew your limits, didnt exceed them (hence your lack of binning - even with a bit of a roadside-ditch visit!!!) and listened to others advice about whether to continue or not (churrs to He who provideth such sage advice)

After that i assumed the others had gone ahead. waited around for a bit sent some txt's then just rode through to themes again and met up with ppl again for the painful straight road ride back to akl haha.

Cheers everyone for a great ride, here's my single picture contribution. Not really many chances to take out the camera and pose really.

Was my first ride up coromandel and loved blasting up the coast until we got stuck behind traffic. Coro to whitianga was slower but just as good, shame about the bin though. From then on, everything started to ache and return trip didn't end up being as pleasant.

Pleasantly suprised how the bike went with my girlfriend on the back, at times like she wasn't even there. - I tried my best to shake her off but she wouldn't let go :(

9.30 is a good start I reckon. Not too early not too late.

I did make the ride.

I wasn't intending to take charge of the ride else I'd've been careful to ensure I didn't turn up with a splitting hangover. Generally if I want to run the ride, I'll organise it from the get-go, rather than on the day when the original planner decides he can't make his own ride.

Leaving uni at 9AM is a pretty good time. Assuming you don't piss around too much, it usually means that you can hit Whitianga around lunchtime.

Lets organise a slow coro run some time for all the gutless bikes, I have the same problem

I'm totally up for it :D I need moar practice and turns practice and practice and practice and practice! Hell it doesn't even have to be coro :P

Come ride with me! (after you done your tyre, at least front one to Pirelli :p)

So you went home in half way yea???? How was it??

I guess I better start saving $$$ then :soon:

I went home at...uh, I don't remember, Jafa will probably remember, I'm not particularly familiar with the route - I don't think it was actually half way either, maybe 1/4? 100km or so in. The little slice of country corners I did do was fun, but yeah, I was pretty much out of my league in terms of powar and skillz

by the way, where would you recommend to get the tyre changed? cycletreads?

Hehe Twinkle can lead the ride but theres no way both of us can catch him up even tho we are on same bike!!! :p

I'll text you or something when we are going for short and learner friendly ride, there's thread about it in here as well :)

Cycletreads are good I think, I got my Pirelli and IRC for $200 total.

Pirelli City Demon reccomended!!! Ask them if they can get it in for you :)

Right, didn't know what Andrew meant when he said you "defaulted". Anyhoo, like I said if the original organizer can't make it (1) no excuse to not to ride, (2) have someone else take the lead assuming they know their way around.

Agree 9 a.m. is a good start although considering quite a few of us tend to go mental on Friday nights, 9.30 is a good compromise.

in the clip from previous Coro loop, did you back off the gas or did i wring on more?!?!? heres hoping i DIDNT wring on more...cos that would be dumb...

I backed off BEFORE overtaking which was my mistake haha, then couldnt find the upmh to complete the overtake! You might have gone a bit faster but was mainly bad planning on my part :sweatdrop

Second time I just kept accelerating and changed lanes hehe

but you got 2 more cylinders than me! *forgetting about the extra 400cc i gots...:niceone:

you should see the rest of my tool kit!
Standard hornet tool kit, 2 shoe laces, a coil of wire (close to No. 8) small torch, 4 dollars, DUCTAPE and a first aid kit if i've got a backpack.

i'm pretty much sorted really.
Something falls off? ductape.
that something is hot? no. 8 wire.
that something wont allow ductape to stick to it? string.
wont go back on? wire/ductape/tie it to the back of the bike.

anything the above wont solve? probably got bigger problems.

well it's a gixxer so we can only expect it to come off a corner every other bike does fine:bleh:

but i have to ask what you were doing with the throttle at the time? me and ryan were both on wet tar bleed. you were on what i understand to be perfect tarmac

but it's pretty clear from the damage you weren't moving fast

I'm totally up for it :D I need moar practice and turns practice and practice and practice and practice! Hell it doesn't even have to be coro :P

how long have you been riding and what riding have you done? coro isn't for beginners due to the sheer size of the thing, and the pace most groups set

i might add hte GN doesn't give much warning before it's on the ground (or so i'm told)

I went home at...uh, I don't remember, Jafa will probably remember, I'm not particularly familiar with the route - I don't think it was actually half way either, maybe 1/4? 100km or so in. we've seen some pretty impressive stuff done on a GN, but from what jafa tells me you need a LOT more practice

you never even got to the coromandel - bailed on the easy miranda backroads

Only thing missing is a selection of cable ties!

Here's my crusty old man tip (stolen from a crustier, older man) - get a credit-card sized piece of plastic (old plastic card is good - I used an old B card) - transfer duct tape onto it - can take shitloads of tape in a really compact space.

This should be compulsory in all tool kits. It reduces the size of the tape massively, and means you're always prepared for anything. Cable ties too - and a cheap pocket knife (ya never know when you'll beed a cork screw or bottle opener, let alone a file, saw, or knife)

Preparedness FTW!!!

Glad you're OK Ehab - it was a 30km/hr crash that killed my Firestorm :shit:

No other vehicles and crash bungs make this a much better outcome.

(Just replace with a set of über-crash bungs like Kyles, and you're gixxer will survive a nuclear holocaust!)

they have (had?) Cinema180 (i think...) at Rainbows End (back when we was children...) that projected video onto a dome-shaped room's wall/ceiling - to a STANDING audience. If you watched people, youd see them leaning from their ankles, and even to the point of losing balance...

The old GN gives tons of warning if you're doing something stupid, unless its REALLY stupid (E.g locking both brakes and sliding into an intersection :o ) Just be sure to listen when you feel it wobble at the wrong times, the pegs hitting the ground or wheels feel 'odd'. Gn's will keep you safe if you work with them

I've had pegs down on numerous occasions on my old GN (as have many other Gn riders i know) and Kiwifruit has even had kneedown (video proof somethwhere). I think your front end worries are due to the stock death-in-a-rubber-disguise front tyre.

The stock front tyre on the GN will make the bike fall if you push it and in the wet will be lethal. This problem is easily solved by a Pirelli City Demon front tyre which will put you back just over $100. and lets face it, if you're sliding the front you are either pushing WAY too hard or doing something ridiculously stupid (see previous post i made).

My GN will wear stock tires the day i turn gay.

I'm not talking about pushing it at all, leaning it, whatever, you're more likely to hook a peg than anything else scraping them on the gn. Its just silly to measure riding by scraping pegs.

I'm talking about front tuck under heavy braking...
To me they tuck alot quicker than others, suspect it'll be related to the steering geometry, as well as the spongy forks. Both of mine have done it, as did Banzai's. Can be rather violent going from a grippy surface to a smooth one.
