At least for the damage they can cause. You should at least have 3rd party cover in place before you put the key in the ignition.
Seriously. Give up beer, or women or whatever - and find the premium. It could save you your future.

HEALTH insurance is advised, as much...if not more. Often overlooked.

I used to be pretty slack about insurance in my younger days, but I've changed my tune with age.
I also work in the repair industry and I've seen repair costs hike.
A classic example would be an X5 BMW with what appears to be relatively minor damage. A new front guard, door required and scuffed wheel. Total repair cost exceeded $20,000 and the door trim with airbags alone costing $7000.:gob:
Not hard to cause a very bad day!

Young fella that worked for us, and who parked his car outside of our house every morning got a phone call from the police one morning asking if he knew where his car was. He said outside number 63, the cop said no, inside number 86!
Yep, his car had taken off down the hill and parked itself inside a once was lovely brick and tile home :pinch:
Thankfully no body was in the way of this runaway car. He had no insurance, the cops did not charge him, but boy did the house owners insurance company persue him big time.
Third party insurance is a minimum, I wont allow my kids to drive/ride anything without it.

Be interested to know if there are any policies out there that insure the rider/driver no matter what he rides/drives 3rd party ?
Know my full cover on the 3 bikes will change next yr
a/ not worth insuring the scorp for more than 3rd party as the eccess for H riding it is near half value (but still cheaper under my name)
b/ only insured both triples with full so i can lend one out to mates for a ride, but none of the slack pricks have a licence ! Could have saved near 600 notes lol

I agree..
After all the penny saving and hardwork to get the bikes, there is no way in hades I would not have them insured. If we couldn't afford to get them insured then we would not be buying them in the first place.
Same goes for the brick with 4 wheels.

S'funny. I was discussing insurance with MDU just yesterday. I think he likened it to paying tax. No-one wants to have to pay it, but you feel obligated to have it.

Its one of those things that is a pain and you wish you could do without it - but its cheap when you need it.
In the last 2 years - Ive claimed:
$2500 for my upstairs amplifier.
$25k (guess - based on cost of doing the bedrooms not on insurance) of carpet
$5000 (approx) for a kitchen bench.
But most importantly my father was taken ill and told to have an operation (quad bypass) and told that he probably would not last 2 weeks without it.
Waiting list for public was 6 months - regardless of them confirming he would not last that long.
Thanks to being insured - he was operated on 3 days later (and he actually had an attack the morning of the operation).
Insurance saved his life!

My son used to be insured with National Auto Club. Huge premiums but I'm pretty sure he was covered for anything he drove and 3rd party. I haven't heard the same for any bike insurance though.
It's hard to convince the young ones to have insurance when the cost is so huge and their wages so low. Insurance companies can pursue a claim and repayment option through the courts, forever.

yeah bro, consumer granatees act covers you aye - the exception would be on 2nd hand bikes, you have to find out what that bikes lifetime expectancy is eg whiteware is 10 years, i'd assume cars and bikes would have a km rather than years, or both.

Tell me about it ! got chased for eons by an insurance company !
Offered to fix the damage myself (was in the trade at the time) but they went with their own repair company which cost 4 times what i could get it done for, so slipped them the bird and said blood out of a stone ppl !
Pain in the arse not being able to get like a liability insurance for myself as i might drive/ride ten different vehicles in a month at times !
Just found (through ltsa site) out the Mrs IS elligable to sit her full now (with sitting a defensive course) She got told the other day it aint till december

Most car policies will insure you for third party damage caused whilst driving any other vehicle that is not otherwise insured.
I'm trying to lay my hands on a motorcycle wording to see if it's the same...

I found two that did cover it and two that didn't mention it.
The wording:
...for your legal liability for claims made on you for property damage as a result of accidents...any vehicle not owned by you that you are using with the owner’s permission.
Moral - read your policy...

Insure your vehicles.
I dunno, there's something well messed up with this world when you get a quote of $713 for a '78 RD250, which is over $300 higher than the premium for a VFR400 valued 50% higher.
Oh no, that's just insurance for ya. :slap:

May I also add my usual rant here about discussions that go along the lines of:
good (i.e. cheap) premium = good insurance
Your cheap premium is gonna look pretty sick when you find you're dealing with a claims dept. full of complete bastards...

My bike's insured with NAC and I'm covered to ride any bike. I got a deal through my broker (also my Mrs) so premiums aren't bad at a little under $570. Bike is currently insured for $17,000.

That's actually 2-strokes and statistics for you.
Insuring my older bikes themselves isn't so imperative to me - it's mainly sentimental value anyway - the potential Porche/person/property they can damage is well worth extra insuring for.

Cant get full cover, so gone third party on the motard (more likely to put the front wheel through a rear windscreen than on the thou)
The cage is different though, I only occasionally use it, and I have a learners. the missus has learnt to drive in it, but still only has a learners - she wants to get her restricted, but wants to practice in the meantime - uninsured. - as you cant have all drivers of a vehicle as learners... makes me cringe thinking of her hitting another car (being an asian female and all)

I insured my new ride 3rd party last week - one year cover ($100 excess) cost $24.60 TWENTY FOUR DOLLARS SIXTY CENTS - like 3 big Macs or one fill up (or in the case of the DRZ 2 fills up).
I guess my years and clean record helped keep the price down - but it would be dumb not to have 3rd party at this price. Ins co is AMI.

AMI suck. I had years of trouble free insurance history, then my house got broken into and I lost heaps of gear including tools and stereo gear etc. AMI took 6 months to pay, stuck an investigator on me, and generally made my life hell - then paid out 30 cents in the dollar. What a total bunch of fucktards.

I have had the opposite experience - have had a largish payout not long after I joined AMI (was with State before that - will never be with them again). AMI was good, fast and paid out fully. I have also had 2 claims this year (both car, other driver at fault) and they were really good at sorting it out. I have also heard from my sister about a couple of claims she made on contents with AMI and she was very impressed.
I am not sure what happened in your case - I don't get how they can pay out 30 cents in the dollar. I would have thought that the investigator would find fraud and you would be charged in court or he wouldn't and they would have to pay you out in full. It sounds like you have had a very different experience to most AMI customers. (I have never had an investigator set on me by any insurance company)

I have had two cars written off through other peoples bad driving.
The first time, the other party had no insurance. I had 7 weeks off work on ACC so 20% of wages lost, insurance excess of $1,000 lost, full year insurance premium of over $1,100 lost. Useless insurance co took ten weeks to pay me out and I had to borrow money to buy a new car in the meantime. All up I was thousands out of pocket. Driver was fined $400 plus court costs - no reparation for me as the cops didn't ask and back then I didn't know there was such a thing. Driver was unemployed and clearly had no money so it was pointless pursuing her.
Second time the other driver was insured and I wasn't injured so none of the above problems.
So it pisses me off that there are so many people that drive/ride around uninsured without a care. I say make 3rd party insurance compulsory. However this wont fix the problem of unlicensed drivers/riders as even compulsory insurance wont cover them.

You can have all the insurance but if you have got a Warrant Im quite sure the Insurance Co wont pay out in any case, not too sure about rego?
If you have 3rd party fire & theft for about $150 then put the remaining $500 ity would cost to go full insurance, in the bank, and over the years it will add up. ie 5years $2500 + interest will cover fall over damage on most bikes.
If you have a bike worth more than about $10K replacement value then I would go with full insurance, but 3rd party is must at least.

Wrong
The reason you lack a warrant has to contribute to the claim before the insurer can refuse to pay.
No Rego is not a valid reason to decline a claim.
