Hi
New forum member here and this is my first post
Anyway, I've just fitted an Evotech tail tidy to my '07 CBR1KRR and am wondering about what I can use for a reflector and where I can mount my rego label.
Does the rego label need to be mounted in certain areas and, if so, is it legal to mount the rego label to the back of the number plate?
With the reflector, is reflective tape legal or is there a standard which reflectors need to meet? I'm looking for something as small, legal and unobtrusive as possible otherwise I might as well go back to my spade
The only area I can mount things to on the back of the bike now is the number plate...the tail tidy itself (true to it's purpose I guess) doesn't provide any blank space on the back or sides.
Any tips appreciated
Thanks

Ah, thanks Scorry. From the pic it looks like you must have an 'L' shaped bracket and it's mounted via the rear brake line bracket?
Cheers

I've just done the same thing. Here's the link to the doc about number plate lights and reflectors...

From LTSA
"What to do with your licence label
When you pay the licensing fee, you get a label that shows the date your licence expires. You must display this label on the left-hand side of your motor vehicle's windscreen, or near your number plate (for trailers or motorcycles)."
I guess 'near' is up for interpretation.
I can't find anything about the WoF label that mentions bikes.

Can I ask what reflector you have bought to do the job? I'm not 100% sure from the LTSA doc if 'reflective material' is legal or not. The text just mentions 'reflector' which, according to the notes, has a slightly different definition. I've got about 2.5cm x 2cm to play with on each side of the LED licence plate lamp...so nothing I can find online is small enough to fit in that tiny space.

I don't, that's why I said my bike won't pass a WoF check. I don't have a number plate light either :(
Guess what I'll be doing this weekend.

Go to super cheap or repco. anything similar to what you have is ok ! You can get them with a small bolt and nut in the middle on the back.

Have also just fitted an Evotec tail tidy to my bike. In the kit there was a little red sticker with Evotec on it, this sticker is a reflector and fitted nicely on the number plate light cover. Not sure how well it would show up at 100m. S'pose you could get the traffic inforcement person to pace out 100m behind your bike and by the time he got there you would have a 100m head start on a getaway.;)

Yeah, I've got that sticker but I wasn't 100% sure if it would pass as a reflector..I guess it's better than nothing and your escape tactic would come in handy

My understanding is that you need to be displaying a govt issue plate. Note that these are nice and reflective so they can see them at night and take photos. Some of the classic cars get by with the deco numbers on the front but they have a proper rear. A few years ago there was as bit of a motorcycle plate protest due to the size (big square buggers) and a lot of Harleys had 'made-up' ones.
Chances are if you are pulled over it will be a ticket.
A red rear reflector is compulsory. In theory it should have some numbers on it proving it is up to standard - any bike shop or wrecker should sell you one for only a few bucks. The theory is it covers your arse if your tail light fails.
AS for the rego display I asked about this only last week with the LTSA as I'd noticed lots of Harleys with it between the front down tubes. LTSA said it should be clearly displayed but not necessarily at the rear (after all cars have them at the front). Ironically she said her husband has a bike and has his under the seat! However this could be a fine as he has not clearly displayed it........

OOps! Sorry dangermark - this is the same one I found; I didn't think you might want the link.
To summarise all this helpful advice - the main things are that the rego label is not hidden (traffic/parking enforcement types are lazy so won't go looking for it) and the reflector should be recognisable as such. (A piece of tape might suffice (spirit of the law), but anything with an 'E' marking mounted horizontally and not obscured would definitely meet the intent of the law.
In any case, like I said to you, if you're not doing anything to make the speeding ticket distributors go over your bike with a magnifying glass looking for things to wallop you with, you'll be fine. Parking wardens will pick up only the glaringly obvious things (does it have a plate, ego and WOF, can they find them without exerting themselves.)

I've never had a reflector or number plate light and never been bounced on a wof (yet?). My rego and warrant holder is bolted to the rear bolt of the chain guard on the swing arm, has fallen off yet so seems OK there. Gets coverred in a bit of crap though from the wheel and chain.

I got some safety tape from NZ Safety and then put my bike through a re-vin. No probs. Its the same stuff the trucks use as their rear reflectors so it should be sweet

Post Shops will give you (free!) double sided tape specifically for mounting rego labels on bikes and trailers. My rego label is mounted on the side of the swing arm. when I removed the fender extension on the KLR I reused one of the existing reflectors. Number plate light is made with 6 white LEDs from DickSmith Electronics, which already have the correct resistor for running directly off 12V. The LEDs are fitted into holes in a piece of PTFE (chopping board) and mounted up under the rear carrier. Has passed a WOF without drama.

Yeah, tape would definately get me out of trouble as all the reflectors I've found are too large. Thanks for the tip Westie!

Try Repco they sell resonably small red reflectors a bit of double sided tape and away you go.

The only legal number plate is the one issued by the NZ govt, nice and reflective with the silver fern in the back ground. It is also not legal to modify this plate in any way as it is still NZ Govt property.
As long as the one you have made up looks pretty dam close you are not likely to be pulled up for it, but if the cop has had slow ticket day, you just generally piss him with your riding style, or they decided to throw it in as part of a package deal with any other tickets they may be issueing it will be $400.00 and I think 25 demerit points.

Unless its changed, the fine is $200 and no demerits, for an illegal plate. That was a couple of years ago tho... so could have changed. :shifty:
As said, they may not pull you up specifically for the plate, but it may get chucked in as an extra (and not optional) when you get done for something else... Had this...

Even if you take a legal plate, and trim the edges off... congratulations, you're now in the winning to receive a ticket...

I got a ticket in Takapuna for not displaying rego and wof labels.:shit:
My rego and wof labels are attached to the chain guard. I didn't bother sending a letter, just a photo and the ticket. Never heard back.

I have trimmed the black border of my number plate and I get warrants no probs. I have also had occasion for the cops to check my bike out and it has never been an issue. My rego is on the swing-arm (up hill side when on stand) and it has never drawn a comment either. I am not sure about the plate belonging to govt. anymore either what about personalized plates ?

Normly isint a problem untill you strike a prick of a cop fresh out of police college, or one that has a general dislike of bikes cough, ginga, cough even if he rides himself.
Personlised plates you mearly own the right to use that particular combanation of letters and numbers, I still believe the plate is still a piece of NZ govt property.
Please note I reserve the right to proved wrong at any stage and retract retract any or all of this information at any time as this is of course only my understanding
