View Full Version : Which glue to repair microwave?

The microwave stopped working (door wouldn't open) pulled it apart and a little plastic bit is broke easy fix if the glue is strong enough.

Any recommendations? Basically the bit pushes up the latch that opens the door so it will be subject to a bit of stress I would say. I cant tell what plastic it is, but it does have "2" on it so perhaps that's 2 as in type 2 making it HDPE?

My favorite glue is Araldite but maybe its not the one for the job here, superglue would break in a second.

cant help you with the glue but there is an electrical hazard a large capacitor which can give you a hell of a belt even when its unplugged
good luck

His dad said something like " Hey look kids! ive managed to make the microwave go with the door open!!!"

I've had some success with fixing stuff with JB Weld - clutch cover, hinges of glovebox lid, etc.

Loctite 401 or 406 are good for plastics. I use them regularly & if used properly last well. Put glue on 1 part & push together firmly & straight, hold for 30 secs & will either hold or fail straight away.

If it is HDPE, then there is bugger all out there that will do the job. Expoxies (Araldite) and cyanoacrylates (Superglue) won't touch it. However 3M developed a product for this group of plastics and put it on the market about 5 years ago.
I would be tempted to try a bit of cyano on it to see whether or not it's polyethylene. If it sticks firmly, it ain't HDPE and the cyano is easy to remove with the right solvent.
If it doesn't stick strongly, it probably is HDPE and I would suggest giving 3M a call.

anything with a high metal content should do the trick just fine... perhaps some knead-it?
