Hey people! :moon:
I aint got a bike yet but I bought some leather gear. I've still got my old helmet from when I had my last bike, a Bell one I payed $400 for. The helmet's never been dropped or anything, it's still in good condition however some of the padding at the top has come loose for some reason and when I put it on my head I could see it was not going to be suitable in a crash. It hurt my head just wearing it because it's not smooth it's kinda spikey and hard. Weird really cause I used it at Meremere drags about a year ago to race my car and it wasn't like that. It's like the foam on the top has deteriorated, maybe from just sweat moisture while left in storage? So anyway what I'm wondering is... Is there a shop in Auckland who can inspect and fix it? Save me buying a new helmet! :spudwhat:

I would find it unlikely that anyone would want to repair one, Bell is a old name beit a bllody good name in its time....... how old is it??? a lid has a shelf life of about 4years so its most likely destened for the tip I'm sorry to say.

DUDE!
For the price of helmets now days, theres no excuse not to have a decent one.
Starting from around $150, you get a pretty decent one. Of cource you get what you pay for, but come on! ITS YOUR HEAD!!!
If the helmet is not fitted right, then your mind is not on the riding but is on how uncomfortable your helmet is. Thats when mistakes happen!
Happy hunting mate

What is your life worth? That is the question. You can get some ok helmets new for $300.00 plus. Go to TradeMe and you can get some very good ones for $150.00. I can not see anyone fixing one and if they did it would cost $100.00 minimum. That's how I see it Sorry.

I suggest that you go and buy another helmet.....
They start at $130 upwards.... to thousands of dollars.
Even trying to find someone who could put in new foam could be well near impossible...
Start going around the bike shops and try on all the new types of helmets..... and see who will come up with the best deal.

Sorry mate, but I'm with Dangerous. It sounds like it's past it's "use before" date, and your head isn't something you want to be taking risks with. Unless of course you're Zaphod Beeblebrox (of Hitchhikers Guide fame, he had two heads), in which case you can spare one.

You could hollow out a water melon? Bike helmets are quite cheap? You could get one of those really really big tennis balls they use for promos and 'fabricate' a helmet out of one of those, it would be day-glo yellow tho? You could pull all the foam out of the helmet and get a builder to spray in insul-fluff instead (would be toasty warm in winter)? You could also just ride really slow so that if you did fall of you would only get a small bump to the scone? By now I hope you got the jist that this post is dripping with sarcasm, if not ride with the old helmet and take yourself out of the gene pool.

was it a motorsports one or just a run of the mill bell bike one?
I would just think those auto motorsports ones be very strong. But sure... they have smaller eye ports and stuff...

that's a shame mate. I always thought helmets lasted 5 years... but if 4 years is the number then YAY!! i can use that line on the mrs to justify buying a fresh new helmet. 8-).

Note he said he aint got no bike yet so his helmet will be fine to wear with his leathers in front of the playstation while he pretends to be a MotoGP rider....

Really you may only have 3 years cause the time between manufacture shipping sale can sometimes be over a year..... Just in case replace your helmet every season and you'll always be in fashion. :)

If you ship it down to me, I'll fix it for you. First I'll put an axe through the helmet as it now to check its construction, then I'll supply a new shell, with new filler. New padding, new straps and fitting., and a new scratch resistant visor The new shell can be in any colour you like, and the total cost will be less than $1000. Alternatively, just shout yourself a brand new helmet for about a quarter of the price and save me the trouble of doing your shopping for you.

I had a packet of peanuts on an aeroplane the other week. There was a warning on the back saying,"Warning - May Contain Traces Of Nuts". I should bloody well think so.

Motorad in Wgtn have the HJC CL-14 Solids on special at the moment for $159. IMO, you can't go wrong with that helmet for that kinda money.

That's a bugger. I'm going in to pick up my new CL-14 after work today. Should be good, might even get a nice mirrored visor to go with it.

Fibre boats & sports car bodies are of similar construction and they don't dissolve at 4 years! How many of you think that if you hit something hard enough with your helmeted head that your spine will survive intact enough to make your head & body worth carrying round for any extended period of time?
Helmets are there primarily to prevent brain injury, and even an old Bell will do that IF it hasn't been previously fractured. SO, the shelf life thing is probably a reasonable estimate of how long a helmet can exist without suffering a blow that compromises its integrity, but it does not automatically become necessary to replace for any reason other than to keep helmet manufacturers in business. That aside, helmet (fibre technology) improvement is a reality and the only way to invest in that and have the best protection is to part with the dosh.

It's not the glass shell that breaks down, it's the integrity of the foam inside, the sweat and oil secreted by your head/hair, it's what you don't see that will kill you...

I did a quick search on the ego's previous posts, and couldn't find any reason for a couple of people here to slam on his post. So whats up, am I missing something here? Or is this how we treat new members who don't know some basic 'laws' of motorcycling?
And as the others said, get a new helmet. Too cheap not too.
