View Full Version : Recommendations for leather pants

I am looking for a pair of leather pants with the following requirements:
- they should have armour and knee sliders
- they should be with the least amount of vents/stretchy stuff so that will hold for a 10-15 minutes rain/light shower or so through town (I canīt be bothered putting my one-piece rain suit when commuting in the winter). I know the stretchy stuff behind the knee is very good (I'm riding a sports bike so the position is quite cramped) so if I can find a stretchy stuff that can be made to hold water at least a little it would be even better than without stretchy stuff.
The problem is I am 1.83 and 70kg and I can't find anywhere pants long enough and slim enough for my size.
I have an Ixon celtic jacket that has served me very well so I thought I would try the Ixon iguane that are supposed to pair with this jacket (the zips match) but I hit the same problem - my knees seem to have been put in the wrong place (too low :D ) and I don't posses a beer belly.
The shops here around Welly don't stock a great deal of leather and almost no leather pants so I can't try out all brands until I find one that fits. Does anybody know which brand or model of pants are made longer and/or slimmer than average? I am looking for good quality (I value my skin), but not the most expensive ones. Probably somewhere between $300 - $600.
As a backup plan - it there anybody in the lower North Island that does motorcycle leather gear to order? If I can't find anything that fits I will have to make a pair to order.
Cheers.

Hi idleidolidy. Unfortunately I usually ride sports bikes so I need "proper" leather pants - moulded knees for crouched position, tightly fit, with armour, etc...

Nothing odd about your size dude, 6 ft 70 kgs is nothing unusual. I would say in a pair of our Estremo's you would be a 30 -32, go one sixe up from whats needed to tuck in back protectors and clothes.
Our have Scholler keprotec (stretchy stuff) in all the right places and minimal perforations in the thighs to keep you cool in summer, if it rains you will be okay for a short while but a set of wet pants (oversize ones) will be the tricket if it pisses down.
If that dont work wecustom make them all the time, but I dont think thats needed. Pricing is $489.00 these are 5 years in the making and have proved to be mint in every respect.
Happy to help, we can send a pair down with a hold on a credit card number if they fit we charge, if they dont we dont.
Fair deal ?
cheers

Hi Quasi. Cheers for the offer.
Can you tell me how suited would these pants be suited for winter? I am hoping for a pair of pants that would be suited for winder and summer alike. I am a little bit worried that with the cold winds we have here in winter I would freeze my nuts off with too much vented area.
I'm not that worried about getting too hot because in summer through town I use draggin jeans. The leathers will be for longer trips.

If your thinking of longer trips, you may want to look at Cordura instead.
FWIW, I usually only wear my leathers when i'm 'going out for an actual ride instead of communting, popping down to the shops etc.

I've got a pair of Quasi troosers - they're fine all year round coz it doesn't actually get cold in NZ. I've rarely seen temperatures below 5 degrees let alone minus 10 or so that I would feel every year back home.
If in doubt wear thermal longs underneath.
Seriously though, a pair of leather pants with armour in that will truly keep you warm in a cold windy winter will melt your stones off in the summer and a pair of leather pants with armour that are bearable in the summer will make your nuts cold. So the solution is simply to add thermal undies with legs to the mix in winter.

Mate they are fine all year round, I wear a set of polyprops under if cold and im sweet.
Yes you could look at cordura, but you wont get the protection or comfort, thinking chicken in cooking bag in the oven, leather poly props if cold and youre done.

Thanks for that Quasi. The pants look good and given all the feedback I've read and heard regarding Quasimoto gear so far I'm sure they are quality products.
However I don't like the perforated leather on the thigh (the part of the leg where most of the water goes when I'm riding in wet).
I got today a tip about a shop that I didn't know about so I'm going to check it out this weekend. If it turns out as dry as the other ones, I might take you up on your offer.
Cheers again.

funnily enough i have a similar yet almost opposite problem with finding pants.. I'm looking for a decent pair of pants with armour. can be leather or not, i really don't mind at this stage. ...
thing is, I'm too short for most of the women's pants that i can find (and most of them can't be altered without ruining them) and I'm either too skinny or my bum must be in the wrong place :S. as i find them all really baggy in the legs and bum area... sometimes the waist fits, sometimes its way too large or way too small....
wouldn't have a bum knee now if i could have found pants that fitted me earlier... :(

Most gear looks like crap when you're checking it out in the shop, you need to check the fit on the bike. If it looks feshinible standing then it likely won't riding, if it fits right riding when you're standing around the pub it'll look... to quote a mate's ex: "like a sack of shit with a bit of string tied around the middle", but it'll do the business.
Does need to be a good fit though, or the armour moves in impact. Tried some of the MX gear?

i havent tried MX gear.. and yeah, i know about the fitting on bike thing... trust me, it's like riding wearing a parachute and the armour is no where near where it should be :S... however, i haven't been allowed to try out some of the gear on the bike so i'm not sure, but have done my best to try and simulate riding posture while trying them on.
in what way does MX gear differ from the norm?

Doesn't usually have hard armour, but it's available in sizes no road rider would want. Some of it does have pockets for the standard armour that could take hard CE stuff...

Hi AJ. You can do what I did as an intermediary solution until I find good fitting leather pants: bought a pair of waterproof textile pants with armor and removable liner and instead of wearing them as pants I wear them as overpants over a pair of jeans. This way they're not baggy and the armor stays where it should stay. The only downside is the fact that I can't bend the knee too much (I'm riding mostly sports bikes). It sucks, I know, but it's better than riding without protection.

and yeah, i have thought about that, but i tend to get very hot, very quickly on the bike, and then get dizzy... and you can see where that would lead lol...
I've thought of leather draggin's but then again, i still want armour...

There's also Leda Leathers - Dusty works from home in Stokes Valley, and makes leathers to fit. I'm somewhat short and wide, so that was a good option.

When you are saying you can "make" and deliver I'm assuming you are making the pants/jackets yourselves? Does that mean you would be able - let's say for argument's sake - to do a customized pair or pants?
I'm not thinking of a major change - like a redesign - the pants with one from your current seris but different size or different placement of the stretchy stuff or of the perforated leather.

Dusty makes good gear for sure, in reality more than good enough i'd say but I do believe Celtic is in another league, he has some freakin' impressive credentials. Impressed me to point to say the next leather motorcycle garment I buy will be from Celtic.
I have a Jacket made by Leda and am more than happy with the garment but Dusty takes his own sweet time to make gear it has to be said and even then there were several points we covered in the design of the jacket we discussed that were not incorperated in the final product but meh...it's still a nice jacket.

Hi Yes we make them. We do customized gear all the time for people that dont fit the narrow standard sied window that most manufacturers offer.
we have 4 one piece customs being made right now......no 5 sold one yesterday, these will be here by end of the month. We can easily make you a set without any problems, we can measure you up to if needed.
