If barty is with 20yrs riding, I don't see why you wouldn't. Shit I'm going in the lowest class I can as not enough experience to try any other. You going to do the woodhill round then??? Noticed you don't make a lot of mistakes when you ride, you loose a lot of time picking your bike up and starting it all the time. yeah thats what I spotted, although I was surprised to need one at woodhill so I looked on the gncc website and if you look at venues it only states you need a extinguisher at two of the venues??? This is where I became confused as to if I need one and emailed greg, but got no reply.

Apparently I came out as Animal from the muppets, this is an improvement to a "gay bear" I guess.

I'm going to have a winkle check??

Novice is fine for Rupert and Reckless etc. You will often find the fastest novice would be in the first couple of clubman anyway. At the end of the day its all a bit of fun for bragging rights.

You can find the burglers by checking the times.
As far as fire extinguishers go, strangely this is not a requirement for Woodhill forestry. But for other forests the likes of Maramarua/Waimihi etc this could be correct.

It would still pay to get an extingiusher though as alot of rides insist on them.

Miss Piggy indeed.:eek5:

Nah you dont need numbers, you get a barcode on your helmet and you get scanned at the end of each lap.

Good on you mate!!

At least this rain should help the track, although I hope it doesn't put them off putting out plenty of arrows/markers.

Also last time they started with a long run down a gravel road, so would be a good idea for the 2smokers to be nice and warm before hand.

A&R
8th October 2008, 22:06
Nah you dont need numbers, you get a barcode on your helmet and you get scanned at the end of each lap.

Dammad1 is right. When you go and sign up they will give you a sticker with a barcode on that you stick on the right hand side of your helmet. You keep it ( provided it is readable) for all the GNCC races. You don't need numbers have alook on greg powers site or the GNCC website tells you all about it.
You get sent off in lines of about 5-6, get given a number to stick on your bike after the briefing and that is the line number you line up in. Its pretty random I think but novices and rookies etc tend to be in the back end.

When you come round from finishing a lap you turn your head towards a computer screen which says stop or go and at the same time they read you barcode. Depending how fast your going :scooter:determines weather you do another lap or not. :chase:generally for me its 3 or 4 laps but up to 5 or 6 for the likes of KTMBOY and the fast guys. takes about 3 hours usually and pretty knackering!

So there's a fuel stop in there as well. I've been looking at my fuel consumption on my rides and I reckon it would do 3 hours easily. The only doubt I have is our trail rides aren't 3 hours full on??? So not entirely convinced it would make it if the whole 3 hours where in anger? I had 2 1/2 to 3 hours on the clock last ride and put 5 3/4 litres of gas in a 7 liter + 2 reserve= 9 litre tank when I got home. I'd like to think the lighter 200 and good fuel mileage might make me up some time at the business end of the race?
Wadya reckon take the risk? Wheres Danger when you need him?? LOL!:scooter:

dont see why you wouldnt make it round on one tank i dont really plan on a fuel stop either but may just for a peice of mind do a quick splash and go wont need to completly refill after 2-3 laps better safe than pushing through sand. At least you have a reserve give you warning you need a top up i have none and rupe only has 1/2 litre once he hits it and that dont go far.

Na. I always thought I could do the same on my 200 as it was very economical but the trouble is that the races sometimes ended being 3.5 hours long.

It takes 20 seconds with a good crew to stop for fuel. It takes a lot longer to push your bike back the last couple of K.

Good feedback thanks guys. From what I can guess I'd probably do a round on reserve anyway by the sound of it. and its highly unlikely I'd go on reserve right at the start of a lap. I know what my tank and reserve is for sure, as I filled it then drained it into a measring container. I mainly wanted to know if I needed to set up a 5 litre can for a fuel stop. I might not even make 3 hours anyway!! But I'll probably do what Danger says for piece of mind then measure what I've used so I know for next time. Crew?? What Crew??

As a rule i refuel at the end of every 2nd lap for two reasons one is that i make sure i wont run out. two is that it cuts time down refeuling on the third as it will require more fuel to be dumped in.

Just poach into one of our tents and when you come in to pit just point in the general direction of your fuel container and grunt loudly like you're in pain. There's always somebody who will take pity on you and will refuel for you. Chop grunts all the time and people help him:laugh:

Yeah I usually stop for gas after two laps or around the 1 hour mark, its also a good time to eat something and drink a sugary drink.

Also the race length is only 2 hours but if you manage to get through the checkpoint just before the 2 hour point then it may be approx 2.5 hours before you finish.

It'll be OK on the day as long as I let the faster guys past and finish I'll be happy to rest my bones in the Howick club Sunday, watch Bathurst and have a few beverages! What a beaut weekend!!

Don't use tear offs, just duck your head if needed. We don't need those blowing around the forest and I've never needed them in Woodhill. You can anticipate having to duck your head if following someone through a big puddle but the sand by itself is generally not that much of a problem. You might want a clean pair of goggles with your fuel just in case but I find I usually don't need them in Woodhill. Just carry a small piece of damp chamois under a rubber band wrapped around the front of your seat to give your goggles a quick wipe if needed. And I doubt your going to need any extra sugar for a two hour race if you have a weak solution sport drink. You look like your carrying enough sugar anyway Rick.

Was hoping to get out there perhaps for a ride or at least to support but been feeling like I've been fighting a cold off the last few days and feeling a bit unenergetic.
I heard Jake Wightman came in first in class and first 65 home and had no crashes. His Dad told me that he told Jake that if he won he would take him to the rest of the rounds. Dads wrapped on both counts and is looking forward to Jake hopefully winning a cap!
Haven't heard from Karl Power after his first race on the 450 but that might be because he had to get ready after for the Rut 100 today. Anyone know how he did?

I'm pretty sure his rad is fine. he bent his pipe so it was touching the rad pipe and burnt a hole in it. But only noticed when it started to make a funny sound. I'm sure he'll fill us in at some point.

Here's an edited copy of a PM I just sent to Rupe on my first ever enduro race experiance. Pretty much sums it up!!

To be honest mate I'm still fucking gutted at my lack of skill and ability. Anything wrong with the bike was induced by my pathetic riding. I'm not sure I'll do anymore rounds until I have practiced heaps more. I think I'll have to stop riding within my ability (like the day when I was at the Sandpit with you and 4stroke) and start pushing it harder. I just have to learn to ride better I fought the bike so much and fell off so much I didn't even think I could finish a lap about 25 mins in. 5 mins later I discovered the water problem after I'd hit a tree earlier. I'd pushed the pipe into the radiator hose and cracked the hose. There's not a lot of clearance there anyway but the tree didn't help??

I cleaned the bike but haven't stripped it yet, it got a bit of a rattle on but never nipped up or seized so it should be OK. Maybe a new piston and ring needed just to be safe. I rode it back to the pits via the road after I put a litre or so from my my Camel pack in it, so it wasn't completly dry either. Lucky I heard it and know what a 2 stroke death rattle sounds like from my Karting days. I stopped to look after only the second time it did it. I 'll take it to bits this week but I'm not expecting to much to do!

Still fucking gutted with myself though!!

I'm pretty sure his rad is fine. he bent his pipe so it was touching the rad pipe and burnt a hole in it. But only noticed when it started to make a funny sound. I'm sure he'll fill us in at some point.

Anyone know who was riding the white yzf450 that tried to kill me off the start line????

Yeh it was that old fucker that was running in 22nd place on the 3rd lap at least i didnt cause you to drop it that would have been one of those visa priceless moments. You should try getting of the start line full tit in second on a track full of ruts one handed not that easy but beat smashing hand on your bars.

We started on grid 23.

There was 80 odd entries with 70 odd finishing at least one lap, me and my mate started on grid 21 and it was a complete mission getting through the traffic, got the holeshot and steadily worked my way through, got 15th overall, 1st in age group and 5th in bike class, not to bad but a couple of small mistakes cost me a couple of spots. I'm looking forward to the more open and flowing tracks where I can actually use some of the power, it would have been nice to be on a 200 in all that tight stuff.

Good work guys, sounds like ya all had a good days racing - except for Reckless that is:eek5:. Me be thinking that maybe you should come out with us to do some tight twisty riding.
Not that you will need it for the next round at Matata though as this course suit the MX style more. It even has jumps?

It doesn't suit the old farts so much as it fair beats the ole body up.

Thanks for the offer mate I might take you up on a few lessons out the sandpit!!
I'm hoping, upon hoping that I might be a bit better on the open stuff. I did way better on the Rodney ride weekend B4 last than I did in the forest last Saturday. They are not big jumps though, alot of ski jumps going up some fast open uphills, they are totally awesome and you can hit them tapped without any real worries, really good place to pass people as some are a bit tentative over them and I am certainly no expert on jumping.

I wondered what happend to you Reckless, I didn't see your name on the results and thought you mustn't of turned up.

I wondered what happend to you Reckless, I didn't see your name on the results and thought you mustn't of turned up.

Turned up, stuffed up, then spent the rest of the day giving the others jelly beans in the pits. It was a good learning experience for my first time out. I learnt, you gotta stay on the bike for the first lap to even score. One guy next to me in pit lane did the first lap, rested for an hour then took of for his second lap?? So it was good to go to my first enduro and learn the ropes. What I should have done was go along and watch one or two races last year so I knew what to expect.
No probs though, gonna practice racing:chase: in the future not just riding. LOL!! Hopefully pain doesn't come with it!!

One of my problems is the bike usually feels good under me but on most rides (even casual days) the first 40mins (or lap) everything feels strange, track wise, nothing seems 2 be quite clicking, I'm just not seeing things right. Then I get into the groove and everything flows, see the corners better, anticipate better etc etc. Then i get tired and I make a few mistakes but it still feels good. Its the first bit I didn't get through at the GNCC when I hit the tree and burst the water hose?

My question for you experienced guys is: Does this first odd feeling bit go away with heaps practice/experiance or will I always have to manage that as part of my race plan??

Ktmboy
13th October 2008, 09:03
Ah, this is commonly refered to as the "Red Mist". Everyone going hell for leather in the first 15 minutes. But you're not going to do good when you fall off 6 times in the first lap.
I started from grid 6 which is not ideal and by half way through I reckon that I'd passed at least 20 riders. Passed being not quite the right word. More like they had the red mist real bad and 60% off them fell off literally in front of me.

Stay calm and remember that its at least 2 hours long.

chop
13th October 2008, 09:12
Ktmboy sumed it up well i think... I am still one to push and shove in the first lap.. Some days everything feels strange and sat was one of those days for me.. The best advice i can think of is to stay claim and remember you have 2 hours (or more) try and keep to a steady comfortable pace and try and set consistant lap times and the rest will come with time if you hear a faster guy come up behind you move over if its safe but dont stop then try and follow some lines and see how you go if they dont work for you back off and trust your judgement of your ability.. One thing myself, ktmboy and the lads have always and will always have in the back of our minds is to finish first first you have to finish!! be a survivour not a train wreck theres more glory in finishing a hard event than watching everyone else come while you nurse a sore body or ego..

I accept what you guys are saying and agree! The years karting have probably ingrained in me that once the guy in front gets away you never generally catch him up. Which probably isn't so much the case in this sport. Hehe! problem is even the bloody girls got passed me?? Although I generally I took the long way round when I heard a bike behind me to let the fast people past as the grids where not in speed order as they will be next time. I can get along OK on the bike can keep a few of the guys on here in sight even on a fast loop. Probably the sand and forest is where I'm at my worst though!
BUT Back to the point even on a family trail ride with no one to race I generally fell awkward for the first wee while. This simply never happened in my kart and not on the road bike either? So If I go out the sandpit every Sunday, Ardmore Wednesday and Harrisville Saturday till I die. Will it go away? Did you guys have this when you started and its gone, is it still there or was never there??

I think you allways get that feeling to a certain point everyone is different i get it for the 1st 5-10 min till youu get the feel for the ground your riding on and as with forest sections this depends on how tight it is. Once i get past that you then kinda know what to be expecting and can ride a lot quicker and second lap you start to remember where different things are etc etc

but riding ardmore and harrisville aint gona do much good in terms of practice for a gncc event in tight twisty forest(sand) races.

13th October 2008, 12:15
I still feel like that most of the time... Try to look ahaed and enjoy your time on the bike have a play around before you go out to get the feel for it. I used to vomit before races and then flounder around for the first lap until i settled.. Its nerves and not knowing whats around the corner that does it to you just try and remember as long as you ride within your ability nothing is going to jump out and hurt you also try and remember first and foremost your there to have FUN!!! If you see us out and about feel free to come for a ride and or have a chat im sure one of us may have an isight for you. The feeling does go away to some extent after time

cheese
13th October 2008, 12:22
Its probably to do with some of the adrenalin rush you get before a race too. I get a bit nervous and take a while to settle in. I think that you just have to ride at your own pace and remember that you will pick up half of those guys that race off ahead on your second lap.

dammad1
13th October 2008, 12:53
I always find it takes a little bit to settle in, but the biggest thing about the GNCC's is to get through the first lap safely at a comfortable speed, you see it all the time, guys charging hard on the first lap only to break themselves or thier bike or they just tire themselves out and their lap times in the latter part of the race really suffer. Smooth and consistent is the key.

Can't wait for the next round!

Reckless
13th October 2008, 13:01
Interesting replies! I wasn't actually that nervous not like starting the final round of a national karting event. I did have the intention of riding my own pace as well but maybe I pushed harder than I thought I was. Well I must have unless that tree has movable roots . Big difference I suppose compared to a trail ride where you can always stop to wait for someone or have some road sections to rest, it was just full on. LOL!!.
That answers my question though. Good to know from Dammad, Barty and chop the awkward feeling disappears with experience to a certain degree . So now I have to ride and ride get as good as Barty to cut my awkward 30mins down to 5-10mins. Now where's that bloody bike the days awaisting, more practice needed. Oh shit I forgot I broke it. That's what you get for playing with guys 20 years younger or 20 years more experienced. To late now though, I don't wanna rest till I've got this MX thing sorted!! I reckon I'm a bit better than that showing! Next time I'll sort it!

OK engine report after loosing the water. The bloody thing is immaculate! Its not often you take an 03 bike apart and there is absolutely no evidence of any mishaps anywhere in its long past on the bore. Plenty of 2 stroke oil around and the piston hasn't even got the normal shiny spots on the skirt. Bloody great! I wish I hadn't touched it. But I won't be able to resist new rings, top bearing, pin and c clips while I've got it apart, for piece of mind and just because I don't know how long they have been in there.

I must say I was a bit suspect about what I would find after working on the Honda as where there is 12mm bolts on that, the the Ktm has 10mm and 10mm on the Honda where the Ktm has 8mm etc. So the impression I had was, it was built lighter. But there's a damn solidly built, quite heavy, 2 ring piston in the 200 (makes those little 4 stroke ones look very flimsy). The power valve set up goes down onto the actuator lever via a fork arrangement, Nice and simple! No wonder Danger got 400 hours outa his. There built like a brick shit house. The bottom end feels nice and tight. The thing could run quite a bit leaner as well but its got way enough power for me so I'll leave that for greater longevity. Overall I'm quite impressed!

Oh by the way where's the best place to get Cheap Ktm parts!!
Ignore that! local shop for 2xrings,pin,bearing,cclips,Rad hose $120 incl. So Parts quite good value as well. Not worth my time shopping around to save another $20 bucks

A bit more fast and furious as you are really racing the whole time. But then the race is only 2 hours long so you don't get very much time on the bike($55 for 2 hours).
The track at Matata is a mixture of Farm and forest. There are a couple of stoney creeks to cross and someone always takes a dunk.
The forest tracks are cool but if it's raining then watch out as some of the areas are Eucalyptus plantations and the ground foliage becomes like banana skins to ride on.
2 years ago and I wiped out 5 times on one 100 metre slight up hill track. Front wheel just disappeared.
A lot faster and rougher than Woodhill and your body gets a bit more beaten.
