I was on my way to Whakatane the other day in the work van, just past Hells Gate down the hill I saw a black blob by the side of the road. This resolved itsef into a swan, as I closed with it (it's on the far side of the road) it decided to use the road as a runway, running towards me flapping madly it looked a bloody hoot. I'd slowed quite a bit and the bloody thing flew over head. This got me to wondering what the hell it would be like to get a bird strike on a bike. A sparrow or starling, just a bit of a shake up I assume, but a friggin' swan !!! Duck Soup? Anyone had the pleasure ?

I watched as a seagull flew into the chest of one of my mates when we were out for a ride. Luckily he was slowing down at the time, but was going in excess of 70kph.
He managed to emergency stop his bike and then he colapsed on the side of the road, fighting for breath. One hell of a bruise on his chest but no other damage. He continued on his way after a short break.
I would hate to think of the damage that could have been done to him if he was going any faster.
BTW the seagull died instantly. Broke its neck.

I hit a Hawk in the Lindis Pass a few years back. Was on a GS1000S at the time...took out my left hand mirror.

Then I'd best not tell them about the deer I took out in California...

there was a HUGE thread on here ages ago detailing the things different members have either hit or been hit by. made for grusome but hilarious reading.
i think my worst was a white butterfly at 100k. open faced helmet and sunglasses. the butterfly hit the bridge of the glasses and spread its innards across both lenses. made it hard to see and breath! thankfully there was a servo at bulls with water and rags.
i also hit another flying beetle of some type on the same bit of road but going the other way. it hit the right lens and the innards ran down leaving a streak. bit like rain... turned my head to side and the guts got blown out of my line of sight.

I caught this while riding last year. No seriously, it slammed into my chest and stayed pinned to me while I slowed down to a stop!

It was on one of the nice long straights on the bypass road to Miranda off SH22, so, er around about 100k ;)
Bloody near took my head off, I turned my head momentarily to avoid tweety slamming into my helmet but luckily it struck me fair and square on the chest. I turned to look where I was going and the poor thing's wing flew up onto my visor. I slowed down to 30 k's and coasted to where Biggles08 and Eviltwin were waiting for me, stopped the bike and took a few souvenir photos before respectfully placing the hawk by the side of the road. Poor thing!

Starling, flush on the left cheekbone in an open face at 90kph. Killed it stone dead. I *might* have cried slightly in one eye. I mean, the poor Starling.

Very near miss last weekend...........Tweety got lucky.
Worst experience? Road between Governor's Bay and Lyttleton....open face helmet (it was the olden days), riding into a swarm of wasps..........fastest stop and helmet removal in the history of mankind........
