I will be flying to Auckland the first week in December (2008) and then promptly looking to get on a bike and start my trip....a 3-6 month tour, hopefully with some work interjected. The bike need not necessarily be in Auckland.
I am looking to buy a used Wee strom, preferably with some engine guards and a top box (but not essential). Any year considered if condition is good. I could negotiate a buy back deal at the end of my stay which might be profitable to the seller...this is an option we could discuss.
Any help, leads or ideas would be appreciated. I have been watching the 'trademe' and 'motorcycletrader' websites already.
Thanks,
Pete
Edit: I struggled with the price field, looking to buy in the range of $5000-$11,000

I looked at this one:

for a mate - was in good condition and a nice bike. Has a top box but no guards. If you are coming from the US simply bring some Givi's bars with you (and a pair of H+B for me please).
$$$ is highish and I think you should be able to get it cheaper esp given that there is no trade etc.
Good luck and be sure to let KB know you are here - there will be plenty of people to ride with!

Thanks, saw the ad for this bike. A local boost of confidence in the quality of the machine is a big help.
If there is a way for me to bring in some H&B bags for less than the shipping, let me know. I am already trying to scheme how I will bring all I need without shipping anything ahead of me. I did just buy a set of used Jesse's (Odyssey II's) which will be my checked luggage.....and I may be looking to sell them at the end of my trip---which would probably represent a good deal for someone here.
Right now I need a work permit as much or more than anything else. Anyone know of any local veterinarians looking to hire short or longer term?

Vets are in short supply, according to clients of mine who have bought and sold vet practices. they get paid good money, too. Nothing like the US of course, but reasonable for here. Presumably your quals are recognised? (there must be, Ive had Canadian, English, Irish vets when Ive been paying the bills....)
doubtless you've emailed the NZVA? they will be able to tell you what to do next. Pretty sure there is a trade magazine as well which is sure to have situations vacant, or maybe a bulletin board with vacancies on the interwebs even.

(I thought you might be a military veteran but I guess not :)

Thanks for the suggestions. That v strom in Auckland is still listed for sale...another 2 months though before I arrive.
As far as the vet opportunities, I have checked out the NZVA site and some others listing job opportunities. I have been granted a provisional certificate to practice already. Yesterday I got a job offer! Two actually; a position in Wellington and one in ChCh. I have lived in 2 areas in the US in the past 18 years----San Francisco Bay Area for 9, and Colorado for 9.....I greatly prefer Colorado. Any advice about Wellington vs. ChCh?

If you like wind, traffic congestion, hills with nice twisty roads etc then choose Wellington. If you like wide open spaces, nice weather, hills with nice twisty roads, flat areas with long sraight roads, fantastic scenery etc then choose Christchurch.

Pom, I don't have enough posts to send a PM. Could I send you an email directly to give you details of my offer, and maybe even forward a CV to your girl if any other ChCh vets might be looking to hire? I'm a small animal vet with only very limited experience with large animals.
