View Full Version : Big road bikes; Let's use 'em.

At great risk of ridicule and banishment from the Adventure Forum
I have observed that many of us keen adventure riders have more than one
bike at home in the shed.

The bikes you have which I am focusing on, are large capacity "road bikes".

I often browse the 'Touring' Forum to see if they have organised rides such
as we do here in the Adv forum.
The impression that I get is that there are no rides such as we organise.
( I stand to be corrected )

I have never yet met an Adv rider who is anything less than enthusiastic about bikes and riding...oh and socialising too !

The idea I'm chucking round then is, is any one interested in the idea that
us 'guys' can also get together and do 'road' trips too?

I am very mindful of not treading on toes here, as some of our mates do not
have these bikes, but I also know certain 'envious' fence-sitters who might
take the plunge given the incentive of another ride.

So what do ya reckon..?

( and yes, just in case you were wondering, this is all " CARY's " fault :2guns:!!!! )

Every things Cary's fault. I like his new Ducati it's nicer than mine. I would come along on more of these rides if I wasn't on opposite shifts to Cary's and could spare the time away from family atm. The road rides sound good.

Yup, I've got an old GS1100GK Suzuki gathering dust in the shed. Hasn't turned a wheel since I got the KLR. Warrant expired, registration on hold, battery as flat as a wet turd. Sad.

Bring anything you want just remember that when the seal ends you're not even half way to somewhere you've never been before:nya:

A, Wot, how's that work!! I mention I got a DUCATI 999 SUPERBIKE :drool:once and road ridings all my fault :Pokey:

Every things Cary's fault. I like his new Ducati it's nicer than mine.

And I protest:baby: Anthrax put the idea in my head!! After dismissing buying a more dirt biased Adv bike(I did get Tiger thru 42 ok) I was FORCED to buy something! and the sound of his 900FE just drew me in........

Does sound like a good(no GREAT) idea but but what to bring, the long distance comfort of a road tyred Tiger or the sore arse/wrist, lack of fuel range of the 999 (might have to do a Marks) and trailer it in........

:niceone:Fri, Sat, Sun, 30,31 Jan, 1 Feb 2009....that's when !!!:niceone:

Cary has sown the seeds of an idea for a ride out of eastern BOP.

He would like a nice easy ride for the Saturday.
Myself, I would like to do a full LAP of the East Coast !

Accommodation arrangements are well underway.

We are going to discuss this over one beer only, on his ride this weekend.

Your feelings at this stage....?

Details will be posted early next week.

Regards

I'll wait until the plan is a bit better formed , but 3 days is going to be an issue due to work commitments:buggerd:. A saturday/sunday would suit me better:banana:

As discussed somewhere near Fletchers Bay, I'm pretty sure that I'll be in (depending on work commitments).

On a Japanese V-twin, to balance out the Ducati mania.

How is planning coming along for this ride?
I don't have a big road bike :( but would be keen for a social catch-up, since you'll be in the neighbourhood :apint:

Well it was all off but i've been thinking about it Rosie (had already booked off my shifts) and I think i'll do something after all on weekend of 31 Jan -1st Feb, dates suit you?

After talk at Coro ride I was worried it may clash with Clints ride but prelim dates he suggested it looks ok.

Gonna make a couple ph calls but look out for a post Sunday.........

Yep, 31 Jan-1 Feb is clear for us, I was vaguely thinking about a Motu-Waioeka loop, but there's plenty of dirty options around there so we'll work something out to end up at wherever your Sat night stop will be.

Or I could just fit the road tyres up to the KTM & keep all you Ducati riding posers honest :devil2: :Pokey: :D

Hopefully the BT45's would grip the tar a bit better than that TKC80 did on the way to Whanga' on the TTTTT...

Cheers

He has spies ;)

I have a road-riding friend who may be keen to tag along, she's considering a move to the dark side, so we should introduce her to some of the ADV crew.

And apparently Kanny's Bandit is operational, so we may be able to convince her to join us.

I suspect that the sherp and I will just be meeting up with the road riders at strategic points, rather than attempting to keep up with anyone :scooter:

spelling never was my strong point

the trailer is only designed to carry 3 trail bikes so I think the KLR would snap it in two :pinch:

actually the KLR is a slow but fun road bike ('slow' and 'fun' are not necessarily mutually exclusive)
