New Zealand doesn't have an official organ donor register. The thing on your driver's licence is pretty much a waste of time -- it requires somebody to read it and take note of it. Unlikely to happen.

If you are dead set on being a donor, better to tell your partner/significant other/next of kin and get them to agree to let it happen while you still have full control of your faculties. Because if there's any doubt, you'll be buried or fried with all your parts.

That works out to $1920 (I think) for a kidney. Seems hardly worth it to me. I reckon my price would be $500 000. Since they would never offer that, there's no reason to even think about it. (Oh, ofcourse a guarantee that I'd suffer no health problems).

Problem is that your next of kin... they can say no to it once you are dead and they cant use them... Thats the only thing that Im really worried about.

Aaron you obviously aren't on the waiting list for a kidney at 35 years of age after suffering a viral infection years ago that left you with less than 10% kidney function, dependent on a machine, and want to stick around to enjoy watching your daughter grow up. That's a real scenario of a friend of mine, organ donation does not always have to do with idiots who don't look after their bodies, go sit in the dialysis unit and have a look at the patients in there.

Organ donation is a personal choice, and some choose not to for religous reasons. But i say if it doesn't go against your religous beliefs then it's a wonderful gift of life you can give someone.

As some have already said, marking it on your licence is a start but at the end of the day, the law in this country requires consent from next of kin, so if your keen folks, tell your family!

I'm marked as a donor on my licence since I doubt my precious organs will do me much good in the hereafter... however, it is a little disconcerting hearing that a licence with 6 and donor makes me a "donorcycle"... I'm sure it's just nurses ghost stories, but I would hate to think they would give up on me sooner because the guy in the next bed needs a new lung and I happen to have two to spare... :no:

as for actual donation....I've seen waaaaaaaaay to many horror movies (and no, they aren't home movies....that would come under thrillers :P) I simply put off organ donation. I completley understand that it can help save others lives. But I simply just can't sign the donation part of the form.
But hey, if some Dr can convince a family member of mine, then they deserve it :) They'll just have to get it out before I burn.

yeah i get what ya saying....But i still think its a waste of time.......and saving people that have lived an ok life anyway...30+ years wheres the sense?? sure if i went and looked at all the people that need transplants im sure i would feel sorry for them.....but i still say when ya times up its up people need to get used to the fact that you have to die sooner or later....and i dont think the world needs to spend all that time and money on saving one person...duznt the world have enough people?? sure i would give a child one of my kidneys or abit of liver but a child has a lot to offer and deserves a chance at life, but anyone else especially someone i dont know...in all honestly i couldnt care less.
