Hello,
I recently got hold of a Moto-Guzzi V1000 Convert. It's like a car auto more than a scooter ie: 2 stage trans and torque converter (hence 'Convert') with a clutch lever you pull in to change from low range to high range and vice versa.
My problem is how to tune it.
You start the bike in gear, either low or high, it dosent matter what you do with the handlebar lever in our out.
When on the center stand the back wheel spins with the throttle unless the 'clutch' lever is pulled in, there is no Park setting. There is also no Netural, just the trans disengages when the lever is pulled in. So it's either low range or high range or the lever pulled in.

Do I tune it lever in, or out? Back wheel spinning on the stand was ok for balancing the carbs but to set the timing you need full advance @4000rpm and that was too scary to do as she got a wobble on whilst on the stand.

The idle setting is 950-1000rpm and that's not too bad, the back wheel is going about 25mph, but should that be set under trans load or with the lever pulled so the back wheel stays still?

The manual is bollocks and does not mention anything about gear or lever positions, just generic Guzzi tune up stuff.

Anyone know?

P.S. it is a bunch of laughs to ride, a 255kg scooter that would get blown away at the lights by a real scooter.

Tuning should always approximate the way the engine will be loaded in the real world. Since in the real world the engine will be pressurizing the converter and what not sitting at a stop light... the rear wheel needs to be loaded.

Locking the rear brake down should work.

Makes good sense. I will do that today, it will idle better at the lights with the brake on if I set the idle as you described, right now it wants to stall so I pull in the lever to prevent it.

Michael.
