That could be the future if bikes go the same way as cars:
From Fox news (because if you cannt trust Fox - who can you trust):
"So you think junior is a little too lead-footed when he drives the family car? Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will give you the power to do something about it.
The company will roll out a new feature on many 2010 models that can limit teen drivers to 80 mph, using a computer chip in the key.
Parents also have the option of programming the teen's key to limit the audio system's volume, and to sound continuous alerts if the driver doesn't wear a seat belt.
"Our message to parents is, hey, we are providing you some conditions to give your new drivers that may allow you to feel a little more comfortable in giving them the car more often," said Jim Buczkowski, Ford's director of electronic and electrical systems engineering.
The feature, called "MyKey," will be standard on an unspecified number of Ford models when the 2010 cars and trucks come out late next summer. The feature will spread to the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup as models are updated, spokesman Wes Sherwood said."
Good idea for bikes? (guessing thats not going to get a lot of takers)

Excellent way of creating a modchip market for Fords.

Fords already have problems reaching 80mph.
Talk about a total non-issue.

I'm on the fence, on one hand your stopping ya kids from doing stupid things (ok limiting some of it) on the other those stupid things you do help you grow up into an adult, the apron strings need to loosened at some point so the "young adults" can learn for themselves, besides, they'll just end up doing what they couldn't do when they were younger when they're a bit older anyway.......if they don't wear their seatbelt, that's their problem, it brings me to think of the drug testing at home scenario (or at school for that matter) Sometimes the less the parents know the better!

Between the screaming the grunting and the continuous alerts, it could get pretty noisey back there.

I'm with you. What they should have as a feature is a "hand" which pops out of the steering wheel and bitch slaps you if it senses you texting, putting on make up, having a shave etc.
Automatic reset. Yeah boi. That would learn 'em, yessir.

80 MPH (130 KMH) - could still do some serious damage at that speed.

oriented cars have had reduced hp "valet" mode for years, i guess Ford didn't fit into that category. :chase:

Whatever happend to things like... you know... TALKING TO YOUR FUCKING KIDS?
Technology is not/will never be a substitute for parenting.
I got a big speeding ticket when I was 16. Guess who was taking the bus to school for 6 months.

Yes but now-days the parent will say no, the kid will say fuck you and do it anyway, the parent will kick said child in the ass and be off to prison with Sue Bradford demanding that the parent be punished severely for this savage assault.

With the way that cages are going... having a microchip in your pocket that simply recognises the car and all the driver has to do is press the "start" button.
This is a ford though, so you will probably have to insert the crankhandle through the front bumper then wind like crazy...

Really no reason? What about the annoyance to the fellow road users when someone can't go with the flow of traffic which is travelling at 105? What about when some slow idiot is driving at 85 and it is hard to pass at 95?
It seems to me that in some ways it may not be a bad idea, but there are definitely some reasons not to do it.

Its not a new idea, it has been done before............ 1990's Corvette ZR-1
Taken from HERE (http://jalopnik.com/cars/jalopnik-fantasy-garage/jalopnik-fantasy-garage-chevrolet-corvette-zr+1-252795.php)
"To discourage 'Dad, can I borrow the 'Vette?' hoonage, GM installed a 'valet key'. With the safety switched on, half of the LT5's valves shut down, as did half of its 16 fuel-injectors. Rad. This allowed the ZR-1 to scoot about town to the sound and relative fury of 250 ponies — still 5 hp more than the base C4. Once father was in a position to know best, he could turn the valet key and reactivate all the valves and injectors, unleashing the full stable of beautiful horses. We love this. We love this so much it's silly. Modern cars are just starting to get into this bi-modal way of thinking. The new M5 is able to go from 400 to 500 hp at the push of a button and the Veyron needs a separate key in the floor to achieve its top-speed mode. Vishnu tuners up in Danville, CA will sell you their XEDE chip that lets you toggle between two performance modes. We love these kinds of antics too, of course, but somehow the LT5's valve trick is cooler. The feature was wholly unnecessary in 1990, what with gas costing $1.20 a gallon."

Have you driven in NZ? Lots of roads that have very little opportunity to pass for many kilometres. It's one of the many reasons I prefer a bike to a car.

Bloody brilliant idea. My father's Fairmont can do 200+, which is why I'm the only one of 4 of his kids that's been allowed to drive it.
When I was on my 'stricted, back when I was 17, my old man tied a cable tie round the throttle lever near the carbie, so that the throttle wouldn't open all the way. Slowed me right down! Prolly save my life too, I was going as fast as the car would let me when I flipped it on a gravel road near 3 mile hill in Dunners. If I could have gone faster, I woulda been

meh - at least its not a bullshit as this "Traction Control" most manufacturers are putting in these days. Now that is bullshit. You should be taught how to maintain traction, not have it controlled for you.

We all are guilty of "borrowing" the olds car and getting it up to the tonne, difference these days is the tonne comes up quicker and there are many many more other road users to upset. My point completely eludes me, as does this empty pint gla......(trots off to fridge)

Have you ever tried to buy one of the new keys for any of the later cars that have the reconition chips or whatever in them. They cost a small fortune! They already make pirated copies of them so wont be long before a kid can go and buy a copy of dads key to his XR8 and be doin 250kph.
80mph is fast enough to do faily good burnout :Punk: Limiting the HP would be a smarter idea i think.
The world is becoming far to safe, where is the fun in that!
