Hi, I am looking for some martial arts instruction in Wellington. I want something that will help me to stay in shape and also learn some useful self defense. I have been scouring the internet for options but it has just made me confused. There are many different styles and different clubs.
I have had a year of Shotokan Karate from previously but I would like something a bit softer. I am not interested in broken noses and cracked ribs...
So maybe a Chinese style would be better?
Anyway, is anyone here familiar with the Wellington martial arts scene?
I want something for my daughter who is soon 5 and me who is soon 43...

See if you can find Atemi Jujitsu, It is suitable for all ages/sizes, isn't full contact and therefore less injury prone. It is a combination of all the Japanese arts, excellent for real world self defence, a kind of Japanese Kung fu. It is quite rare though, a good substitute would be Aikido.
Don'T be confused by the apparently thousands of Karate styles, for that is what they are, basically a different style of the same art.
Judo is good for fitness but may be a bit rough and tumble for a five year old.
Good luck. Ooh,
I found one in Welly. http://www.jitsufoundation.org/jujitsu.asp?page=jujitsu_club&clubid=Wellington_Jitsu_Club

Already have the black belt in that one mate... My opponents usually go into spasms and demand further minstrations... Am looking for something more family friendly.

I did both of these for 7 years and have benifited for the rest of my life.
I dont like to use it but its great to have for those "Tui " moments.
Its the spiritual benifit that gave me the control.
Good luck and just look around at a few codes first.
Paul.

Okinawa Goju Ryu. translated as "hard/soft" style apparently. Great people, and all the benefits of martial arts training. I used to train in Newtown and at the University.
