You know that chick who rolls around in her bed at 1am in the morning, tossing and turning, getting all hot and frustrated and moaning and groaning because she get some f*cking sleep, that’s me.

Now, I'm not too keen on taking any pills, so I turn to you guys. If any of you guys have ideas or suggestions, things you do to help you finally get to sleep, please comment. Please...

Cheers,

Try not to have caffiene after like 7:30...depends how tolerant you are I guess
I usually stress about shit for the next day....try to organise everything before I go to bed, write a list if that helps.
Herbal sleep tea? (i hate milk so no warm milk for me)
Not be too hungry....

You sure you're 'trying' to sleep?

Work hard enough during the day you can't keep your eyes open at night....and then get up an hour earlier than you want to.Works for me.

You probably need to sort out whatever is going on in your head. Usually its a good indication that you're worrying about something or highly stressed/ anxious.

Finish the day with some good old fashioned hole digging, an orgasm, and a half a bottle of whiskey.

Crikey dont get me started.

1/ Turn your clock around so you cant see it. Stops the "oh shit its 1am and im not asleep panics"
2/ Use your bed for sleep only (ok sex aswell but the washing machine is more fun)
3/ Don't wear sunglasses during the day, eat lots of cashews/bananas etc all to boost serotonin which converts to melatonin which converts to sleep.
4/ Before going to bed free-write. Get a pad and write whatever comes to mind - once your brain thinks it's dealt with then it'll stop worrying.
5/ Go to bed later, not earlier. If you get a full nights sleep then try small increments of going to bed earlier.
6/ Drugs - great for a short burst to try to form a habit, but can be very counter productive as some inhibit REM sleep so when you stop them you dream like a bastard and think you've been awake all night because you're so shattered in the morning.
7/ Caffeine - has a fucking long half life. Don't drink it after midday (2pm latest).
8/ You may be depressed - insomnia is either a symptom, side effect, or possible cause of depression. Consider talking to someone close.
9/ Get a better bed and pillows FFS. You spend half your life there
10/ Spending the last hours of the day on the internet has been shown to increase insomnia.
11/ Exercise! Especially in the morning. Avoid after 6pm (unless it's sex on the washing machine ;))
12/ Stay in bed awake for no more than 20 minutes (guess - remember your clock is turned around). Get up read a book or do something (eating dry cereal is good - carbs = zzzzz)
13/ PM me if you want any more, beer has run out. Oh, avoid alchohol - it may help you get to sleep but wakes you up as your liver cranks up to process it around 2am.

Phew, sweet dreams.

Are you looking for something natural?

Nutritional Supplements can help - Vitamin B Complex helps promote relaxation, Vitamin B3 helps to stay asleep for insomniacs and Vitamin B6 helps synthesis serotonin. Inositol has a calming effect and Calcium helps calm the nervous system.
Magnesium helps muscular relaxation, L-typtophan is a precursor of serotonin, Vitamin E assists the functioning of the entire nervous system and Vitamin C is important for a healty nervous system and adrenal glands.

Herbs - Chamomile, Cowslip, Hops, Jamaican Dogwood, Kava Kava, Lime, Passion Flower, Skullcap, Valerian & Vervain.
Herbal teas - Lemon Balm and Hops tea apparently has an extremley relaxing effect.
Another useful mixture is Passion Flower and Valerian (equal portions) tea, drunk before going to bed.

If you were looking at herbal remedies, you have to talk to a well established Natropath. They will definately help with your issues.

Aromatherpy is another great tool.
Clary Sage, Cypress, Frankincense, Juniper, Lavender, Orange Blossom, Rose Otto, Vetiver and Ylang Ylang.

The natropath will be able to guide you with these aswell.

I hope you find something to help assist.

I hadn't really slept properly for about a year - identified my problem, resigned from my job and everything was fine. I just have to work out how to maintain the mortgage repayments now.....

Basically there will be a reason you can't sleep. Search your inner self to find out what it is and deal to it.

My solution to sleep problem is to read.
I go to bed a hour earlier than I need, pick up a good book and read.
This takes my mind off of all the shit of the day allowing it to relax.
You cant sleep if you have up toa million voices all telling you different things, all racing around inside your head.
The other thing I do at the same once in bed is allow my body to switch off.
Starting at my toes, let it relax into sleep. again a tense body, as well as an active brain is going to keep you awake all night.
The quieter it is the better too.
Sleep is as important as food, taken regually it will make life enjoyable, over indulge and you become lazy.

Firstly, if I can't sleep, I try not to stress about it - that makes it worse.
I lie on my back, and think about stuff (like bike things) until I start to feel sleepy, then roll over on my side (your brain's more active when you're on your back).
If I really can't sleep, I get up and have a couple of aspirin, ibuprofen or panadol, as that seems to quiet my brain down just enough to sleep.
When I was in Yurp, I resorted a few times to sleeping tablets - twice on flights, and a couple of other times when I was dog tired. I don't recommend them, as you feel really groggy for hours after you wake up. But, OTOH, they did make me feel more refreshed than I had been. I also took some "natural" tablets containing tryptophan, when I had big time zone changes, as this is a 'natural' sedative (it's found in small amounts in milk and cheese), and it breaks down to serotonin, which helps your body clock reset, especially in cojunction with coffee and sunshine. However, even though these tablets are supposed to be taken 2 hours before bed to help you sleep, because my brain's frukt, they actually boost my brain activity and keep me awake. (Taken earlier in the day, they usually make me sleep much more soundly).

Yeah ... or whatever it's called when you're a girly.
I read for about 20 minutes when I climb in the old fart-sack and then fall straight asleep. Trouble is that I often wake up about 3.30 and then just doze until daylight. Sucks!

I find reading is really good, and find it hard to sleep if im on KB for a little too long at night then go straight to bed...

A couple of times i got up out of bed when i just couldn't sleep and went for a blast on the bike, bugger all traffic around in the early hours, something about the cold night riding that got my brain going and focused, gets the 'itch' outta my head, slept pretty good after that usually. Not something that i did on a regular basis though.

I also find that if i've had a lack of physical activity it is also hard to sleep, mentally buggered but just get that gotta do something feeling.
