Average speed cameras have been out for a while but only work in pairs (and need to be connected).

The new ones work in a network covering ALL entry and exit point

Drivers who slow down briefly or who make a detour from the main route will still be caught because up to 50 of the cameras will work together in a network. They can be positioned more than 15 miles apart and will automatically read numberplates and transmit data instantly to a penalty processing centre.

Only thing saving us is that its 300k GBP a set and NZ g'ment cannot afford them.

Shrug. On any decent road, you have to be going at one honking target speed to actually AVERAGE over the speed limit, cos of slowing down for corners.

And how is it going to factor in me stopping at a convenient roadside pub for half an hour ?

And what if you turn round and go back ?

Stealth moves are called for - make a number plate using a small LCD display. Program it so various numbers are obscured/blanked/changed in some way at a frequency high enough that a human eye wouldn't pick it up (eg CRT TVs refresh at 50HZ but the flicker isn't that noticeable) but when the camera snaps a picture some part of the plate will be illegible.
Or have it linked to the speedo so once the limit is exceeded it changes the number to, oh I dunno, numbers you've harvested from police cars, government officials, Inland Revenue, people like that.
is it possible? No idea, not an electronics expert

I lived in Malaysia for a while, and the common practice there is to fine people between the toll booths (this is on top of the odd bribe along the way to police people, 50rm is the normal "gesture").

So, if you were heading from Singapore or Malacca (Melaka), you'd drive/ride like an absolute nut - the roads are awesome, and smooth as. Then, upon arriving at the next toll gate, you'd sit and do the math on your average speed... Now, at 50mph it would mean that 25 miles would = umm, err. Hmm. Get the phone out, now how do you use the calculator. Okay, 30 minutes. So, at 150 mph, it means that I'd take, umm, err, much less. So how long do I need to sit here for??
