View Full Version : Sutherlands Hutt Adventure Ride Sun 12

I've been thinking about checking out Sutherlands hut on Sunday.
Planning on meeting at Caltex Rimutaka at about 10am
Ride over to Martinborough and grab some food at Toppies ( Flying fish )
And then head down the road.
Its about 20-30k of gravel road, then into the forest where it turns a 4WD track.
Haven't been down that way for over a year, so condition is unknown.
Last time it was steep and rocky in some places and you had to cross the river about 3 times.
Pampa hopes to make it, but if anybody else is up for a bit of adventure
you're more than welcome to come along.

Hiya Jim
I was planning on going over that way on Sunday morning - supposedly/possibly with Gunna (scramber) and Gerald (weestrom). It would be silly not to hook up - although last time I went with them to Sutherlands Hut the weestrom ended up with muddy water sloshing around in both the headlights and the scramber ended up with a reshaped bashplate and bent frame mounts. Should be fun...
Hopefully 1-3 of us will see you at Caltex at 10

Hi Jim, I could be interested in coming along for this, not sure if I'll have the time to go all the way, as I have to pick my daughter up from a sleepover at some stage in the afternoon.

I was riding on this one yesterday http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=83780 and stayed home today taking in the joys of Bathurst and in between squizzing at that worked on my VFR and caught up with a mate who turned up on his '52 Matchless.
My question is though, did you boys go right through that track from end to end and what condition is it in because I still haven't got around to checking it out.

Here's some that I got today:
1) Jim pretending he knows what he's doing, moments before Marks photo's
2) Righting the beached whale
3) Mark showing how it's really done
4) Howie zooming along

More:
1) Mark on one of the larger downhills, the picture doesn't do the gradient justice.
2) Mark on one of the many river crossings
3) Jim crossing the same river

Jim as always - on that elevenfiddy of yours 'you're the man!'

Im going to have to do some work on the G/S before the next one, the sump guard mounts are all bent along with a few bent bolts, and there's a big dent in the underside of the guard.
I can see it definately saved a few direct hits onto the sump.

No log this time sorry. I broke my GPS mount picking the bike up on Red Rocks
Still trying to source a replacement :(
I think it is about time for a name change, the Busa hasn't sold yet
but I have no plan's to keep it.
( unless they up the open road speed limit to 140 )

I haven't done it yet but went to here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=23845&d=1137042648 in my car a while back.
It runs from Haurangi Road past Ruakokoputuna South of Martinborough out to Te Kopi near the Pinnacles on the coast road to Ngawi and Cape Palliser.
Here's the DOC info on the hut http://www.doc.govt.nz/templates/hutprofile.aspx?id=37393

Hey Mazz1977
I'll get the road names and directions up for you when I get home.
I should have just chucked the GPS in my pocket, would have been a bit
easier :)

Yes - it was a really good day - judging by the number of pucker moments I had it was a 'real adventure ride'.
looks like you had fun in an interesting area - MarkS you make punting that KLR around look easy - must be all that practice on the WR450!
The WR has taught me all about long healing times - I ride with greater focus now :)
Plus Jim was like a shark circling his prey waiting to wip his camera out the moment we faltered - one innocent mistake and who knows where he'd post the photos..

Its a great track - I'm sure we'd all be happy to do it again and show you all around. Its at the harder end of the scale and I was outside my comfort zone on several occasions - which is what makes for a memorable ride I spose. Search for Haurangi Rd on google maps - follow that road to its end and when you find yourself lying under your bike in muddy water you've reached the beginning of the track.
will post some photos tonight..

Count me in when we do, same here on the comfort zone. Though not far enough out to make it seriously hazardous to your health. I was well pleased my slowing things down was cause I couldn't navigate one side of a river to the other and the like  rather than constantly having to pick the bike up. One drop each was the final tally I think and most if not all of those were at pretty low speed.
Hopefully the bike will forgive me for the abuse it received.

OK checked my files at home and the sign at the gate I showed you the picture of is at -41.419845, 175.363323 on Google Earth. As I said I never went round there on the bike at the time because I was short of time and just went to the end of Haurangi Rd in the car.

I think Aslan made some noises about a few of us Wgtners organizing something local soonish - we're not lacking in choices. Available weekends before Xmas is starting to get a bit tight though - given that there are two other rides already organized.

This map shows the route from Martinborough.
Down Ruakokoputuna Road which then turns into Haurangi Road.
Haurangi Road follows the Raukokoputuna river and ends up at Waikuku where the
gravel runs out.
This map shows the track from Waikuku to Sutherlands Hut, this part is 4x4
