How fast can a modern 600 do a 1/4 mile time these days? Under 10 seconds?? say with a Pro drag racer on board? Who was that guy Pee Wee someone that use to do the times for the US mags? Don't seem to see times posted much anymore do you?

Most modern 600's will do it in the high 10 second bracket with a top drag racer... Most 1000's in the low 10's high 9's.... Have seen at ZX-10R with a top drag racer, tied down rear suspension and a full Akrapovic system do low 9's....

Me on a 600, be happy with anything under 12....

CBR6RR has done a 10.68s 1/4 setting the record ever for a 600 for Cycle World - beating the other bikes. So a sub ten is unlikely standard. This was even against the 636 - foregoing 36 xtra cc's. Also beating the Gixxer (not really a mean feat I know).

Here are some charts for you:

Have seen at ZX-10R with a top drag racer, tied down rear suspension

You would want strapped front suspension - with rear only - the thing would throw you off in a second. They will usually lower the bike as well at the front seeing the aren't going to turn

So by playing around and lowering the bike as much as possible you don't think its possible to go under 10 sec on a 600? :innocent:

Interesting stuff, and shows how unreliable some figures can be. The test of the 2002 RSV and RSVR. The exact same engine in both...just one is 7kgs lighter and has carbon fibre and ohlins; but the times are well off each other. Do you think they 'wanted' people to fork out more for the RSVR? And all the marketing 'hype' for the engine upgrade in 2003 and no real change in the performance (over 1/4 mile), almost getting worse.

I read in a recent UK biker mag that the 636 (interested cos that's what I get to ride ;) ) did the quarter in 11.4 @ 128.somethingorother. This was the bike mag doing it, so don't know if there's room for improvement. The ZX10 was early 10s and somewhere around 140mph.. I'll have to get the mag and read it properly. Also said they got 160mph (~270kph) from the 636 and 180mph (~300kph) from the 10.. not bad goin..

anyhoo, to me, I would have thought lowering the front and stiffening the back would help on a drag, but saying that, I don't think the bike is going to give you much warning before you see too much sky, then upside down earth..

Well guys, HISTORY IS MADE!!!!

Today, in Palmdale, California, WITH A 25 MPH HEAD/CROSS WIND, in front of all the Cycle World editors and representatives of Ducati, Honda, Triunph, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha, Rickey Gadsen does the impossible. In a test for Cycle World for the best Middle Weight bike out, Dragracing has now experienced it's first BONE STOCK 9 second 600 pass..... Or passes!!! Guess what....... It wasn't on a Kawasaki. The Yamaha R6, ran a BLISTERING 9.93@135mph, backed up by a 9.98@135mph. The numbers were.....
1.54 60'
4.17 330'
111mph 1/8mi.
9.93@135mph

NOTE, these bikes are the dictionary definition of stock. NO WEIGHT, stock pipes, -1 front sprocket, lowered, no race gas or motor work, and THAT'S IT!!!!

The test bikes included the Ducati 749, Triumph 650, Honda CBR 600RR, Suzuki GSXR 600, Kawasaki ZX-6R, and Yamaha R6. The test started with ALL the bikes at stock height. The Ducati went 10.71@127mph. The Triumph went 10.60@129mph( ). The Honda went 10.42@130mph. The Suzuki went 10.39@128mph. The Yamaha went 10.36@132. And last but not least, the Kawasaki went 10.34@132mph. What is the fastest you've ever seen a stock height 600 go??? i guarantee it isn't three tenths of those #'s!!!

They then decided to take the two fastest bikes and lower them. That was the Yamaha and the Kawasaki. The Suzuki was down on horsepower and had the second to lowest mph with near flawless passes, while the Kawi and the Yamaha were the only two bike that he could not keep on the ground in first gear. These factors are what made the Kawi and the Yamaha the chosen bikes.

With 2" ground clearance, the first pass for the Kawasaki was a 10.16, with a 1.55 60', but the shock was hitting the swingarm so they had to raise it back up. Then, 4 passes later, with a 1.58 60' and a 4.27 330', the Kawi went 10.02@135mph. The first pass for the Yamaha was 10.12. Then 3 passes later, with a 1.55 60' and a 4.23 330', the Yamaha went 9.98@135mph. Them came back and went a 1.54 60' and a 4.17 330', and went 9.93@135.

Now, this is getting Crazy!!!! I honestly can't believe that a stock 600 went 9's. I wish there was still a 600ss class. If these bikes were setup S/S legally, they will go 9.50's easy!!!!

Stay tuned fellas, Rickey G will go to Cali next month to test ALL the new 1000's!!!! THAT should be interesting!!!!

This is generally because some bike magazine test riders arent as ballsy as other ones.... For instance Superbike Magazine generally gets the best times.... But they also write the most bikes off hehehe

There was a time in the distant past when standing quarter times did have real meaning. A bike with a time of 15 seconds was obviously quicker off the mark than one with a time of 18 seconds. Bikes could be compared directly, and even a mediocre rider would have trouble NOT getting a good time if he was on a better bike. However once times started getting consistantly below 13 seconds, and rider ability meant more than the bike's power to weight ratio, then times became almost meaningless.

There is also the consideration that 20 to 30 years ago you could use full throttle on a road bike on many occassions. With most modern bikes it would be much rarer to ever require maximum power on a public road.

Hey riding a CG125 requires full throttle on nearly all occasions. Laid on the tank with the choke full on I could almost get up to 70 mph (115kmh).

By the time i was finished with the motor on the RG150 it did 12.8, but that motor blew up (and then gridnded itself into a fine powder) after another 5,000k's so it wasnt worth it.
Never got to do the GB, but i reckon would have been good for about 15.
The RG was the only bike i have had for more than 4 years, so all the other bikes i was/am still 'getting the swing of'.
ZXR is a funny bike - accellerates the same in 6th as it does on 1st, so i have to catchup with the gear changes. Dont really want to make the gears any taller either as the speedo allready maxes out way too early.
if i can click gears fast enough on the ZXR i reckon i can easity get in the 12ish mark, but i cant - cos im still not confident enough.

Have a look at this link..it gives the 1/4 mile results for the sprints held late last year.

Thanks for the Sport Rider link to quater times, very interesting.
I do know the quoted quater times for my bikes past and present, it sometimes makes it easy to explain to car nut mates when they ask how grunty my new bike is.
All I need to say is something like " Low 10's " and they understand better and can relate, also the HP to weight figures help, especially if it is 1 to 1

Some of the guys @ gixxer.com have run under 10's on fairly stock 600's for a few years now,and I didn't believe them either but they showed time slips and even video's to prove it......
The best i've ever managed was 10.57 on the 12 on a normally slippery meremere, the turbo got 10.7 with wheelspin in every gear and clutch slip when the tyre didn't  The gixx got 11.05 best...
