Yep,
Yesterday i had to drive the cage (600 kilos of tools to shift from site), and i came back in the traffic past CHCH airport, following a early 20's ? rider on his GN250. He had "sensible boots and a high viz jacket" and a small backpack.......so quite well equiped for a learner with L plates.
Thats where the sense stopped..........following a kiddie car subaru at about 2metres from its rear bumper dead center of the car doing 75-85 k's!!!
He nearly got taken out by a cager on the exit from a roundabout which when it goes from 2 lanes down to one, he without looking pulled out to get past Mr Kiddie car and nearly got wiped out by a 4x4 cage flying up the outside to overtake them both.
NEVER ONCE did he use the mirrors in about 5k's............until i got behind him at the traffic lights and blasted the horn at him..........then gave him some real verbal out the window about getting some proper training......or going out with an old fool like me for an hour to learn a bit of sensible survival techniques........................................ .......
So now i'm off to meet him at 12 today on the old XS1100 to perhaps help another young biker become an old one..............So why don't ALL OF US OLD BASTARDS help out a newbie, as it will help keep the insurance premiums down.
Thats my MR SENSIBLE rant over.........Time for a Blat

Ditto.
Hope he is smart enough to accept the guidance as someone telling him how do do it right rather than telling him what he is doing wrong (the difference can be quite subtle).

Onya mate, I thought this was gonna be another( I saw this coont thread). Good to see ya back it up, so much more productive than flipping the bird and driving off.
Hope it goes well, sounds like it's got a good chance, given that the youngster was prepared to listen to and meet up with ya. Hopefully that'll be someones son that's a little safer on the roads.
Good luck.

I would do the same. When I sold Crazy Frog I took the new rider to a deserted piece of road in an industrial estate and made him do figures of eight and emergency stops until I was satisfied.
Just shouting abuse at people doesn't make them learn, you need to apply some positive reinforcement to make the lesson stick in my experience.
There are people that seem to think pointing out only the negatives and being negative is going to educate people and make them safer....but then he is currently languinshing on my ignore list

I applaud you!
I spen the morning on the beach with my youngest teaching him some basic skills re riding a dirt bike. After 2 hours we are home and he realises that the loose sand makes life tricky and perhaps he needs more training before he is ready for his first motox race...

Nothing wrong with ramming things down throats when it's fully consensual.

But it was done in a positive and friendly way. That way the lesson was learned. He was an eager pupil.
I really wish you would drop the 'holier than thou' negative attitude to tuition as it puts people off riding safely. I believe you have done a lot more harm than good with many of your posts. I am constantly disappointed by your attitude, actions and breaches of nettiquette.

What the Git did.,or is doing is constructive and very applaudable, I just hope the kid learns something from it, even if he takes away one thing it could be the differnce between being roadmince and riding away safely

Good on ya old git,
As a newbie biker myself, it's great to see you guys helping out us L platers, personifies the cool people that get on this site.
I appreciate the time you have given this guy and I'm sure he will be a better rider for your wisdom. Let us know how it goes.
Oh, and why is my missus in your avatar....

Viewpoint is interesting. I'm sure Helen thinks she's doing a fine job. I'm sure Hitler thought he was doing the right thing. Now, I'm about to stick up for Katman - he thinks he's doing the right thing based on a lot of experience on the roads in one of the toughest places in the world - being a courier in London.
Now, if you take his message, and decode the lack of tact and the "end is nigh" ramble that accompanies the message - he serves a valuable purpose.
Further, if you take the polar extremes of the personalities here, for every KatMan, there is a Carver (Ying and Moron), and even the most suicidal of riders, given positive or even negative feedback, can grow up - apparently Skiddy is turning out okay, and people no longer mumble about life expectancies when looking in his direction.
So, back to the point, KM serves a purpose here, he doesn't have the calm language skills of a Frosty, but, and here's the thing, despite the predictability of the end is nigh comments, he gives enough of shit to keep pointing to the inevitable truth from his frame of reference.
Oh, one last thing, are KatMan and McJim married - you sound like you are (abusing each other and never having sex, sounds like marriage to me)...

The stupidest shit I saw all week on a motorcycle was by an older guy on a K series BMW on Remuera road. Stupider than a stupid thing on national stupid day.
Followed closely by the several younger ones that think a hi vis vest and white sandshoes covers it for safety gear.

Me again.........the one who actually bothered to do something to help out a newbie.........................I spent 90 mins today teaching bike control and road sense and lots of awareness training.........yep, he will live longer now....and so will his mate who appeared with him. Both Married with kids and using the GN250's to save money on transport costs. OK so they are only commuters..........but i think i helped.

Good on you; I hope he appreciates that an older more experienced rider has offered to help. It's easy in the heat of the moment to let rip with vitriol, not seeing past the here-and-now, then roar off leaving the other person feeling abused, shaken, angry, inadequate (any or all of the above, whether they are justifiable or not). Taking the time to get past that and arranging to meet for some helpful instruction shows appreciation of the bigger picture. Let's just hope he turns up and doesn't decide to "noshow" because he thinks you're going to beat the crap out of him!

Me yet again,
Complete with that warm feeling (not the one where you piss yourself) but the one that you get from actually being a decent human being . I just received a phone call from the second guy that turned up with his mate......offering money in exchange for more lessons!!!.
Perhaps after 25+years of not helping....since i "retired" from helping on an RAC/ACU bike instructors course in the UK. I may just find doing a bit more on a sunday morning refreshing (and it gets me out of mowing the soddin lawn}...............we'll see.

I say - Good on ya !! We need more people like you in the world.
I'm sure their families will be very grateful you offered to help!!
It's easy to shake ya head at cagers/motorcyclist and wave ya fists :angry2:, but that will never change their behaviour - allowing someone to learn how to improve their skills will keep them alive!
There is good in this world ......

The commute is the danger part of motorcycling... more time thinking of where you have to go/be, than WHERE you are going...

I'm sure I followed that guy on the GN250 southbound on Johns Road on Tuesday. If it's the same guy, he was observing a half second to one second following rule behind a bloody great truck. He didn't have a shit show of seeing anything, let alone any lumps of 4 X 2 or other crap on the road. He didn't seem to have much of a clue at all. So good on 'yer for talking to the guy. He lost me in traffic, I felt like talking to him too.
In those following instances when I'm in my cage I make it a good two or three second rule so I don't run over the mess that will likely be dumped in front of me. Gives the rider a second chance, so to speak.
