Yesterday I was in a supermarket on the way back from a ride and while I was in there someone tried to take one of my rental bikes off the trailer.

They all had a steel cable passed through the wheels so the cheeky pricks gave up.
But it was a nasty scare! I was parked right out in front of the checkout area
in the dropoff zone cos Im always paranoid about parking down the back where there is more room for a trailer. thamk god I parked there. the Manager said that the cameras look out through the window and he should have footage of the culprit- I have to go back today and see....

It got me looking on the net for secure ways of carrying bikes and I found This:
http://www.offroadimports.co.nz/steel_core.htm
They are just the bees knees! Stainless Steel reinforced webbing tiedowns with stainless locks and hooks!
I reckon these with a trailer lock and you are set!

i had the same thing happen, i was parked at a motel for one of the epic events rides in taupo, i backed the ute right up to the window in my room, when i came out in the morning all the straps were off, if i didnt have a chain and a big padlock through the wheel it might have gone!!! sometimes it just doesnt pay to have nice things. sad.

They've gotta be the dumbest pricks to undo the straps and find that it had a lock on it. Losers

It's sad that you have to take these precautions but you do. I'm afraid we share our world with these thieving scum buckets and there's nothing to be done but weld everything down.

Glad they were foiled this time mate. :niceone:

Had a mate with a seat that was electrified. If the kill switch was on and some one sat on it then they'd get however many volts in the arse :pinch:
Might be a good idea to get one back(or have a laugh at unsuspecting mates)

Dang thats lucky. Here's hoping they can be id'd from the footage if there is any....

What do we have to do. Nail, bolt, padlock and triple chain everything we own. Bring back the days when you could go out and leave your doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition....... Sad state of affairs indeed

The RRP for a set of Moto Hook Ties is going to be around $125 and the single secure rack strap is going to be around $67.50. Also have you got an email address as I have some suspension queries?

It is a sad state of affairs mate - yet we have more police officers and security firms these days(costing the public heaps) and still more crime! - I think they must attract thieves and crooks. Mind you the police are usually too busy thieving off the motorists and twiddling with their speed cameras and radars and wasting petrol to notice all the stealing thats going on.Makes me sick.
As a matter of interest - I wonder what causes this rise in crime - what are other peoples views on this? What are your ideas on solutions?

I don't mean to be negative and I only say this because it's reality.
If someone really wants your bike, they will have it regardless of how you lock it down.

All you can do is insure yourself up to the hilt and try not to cry too much when they finally get it.

poverty, jealousy, laziness. As many have said "if someone wants it, they can get it but there's a million things you can do to make it harder for them and easier to find if they do get it. It just sucks that ya have to spend all this time, money and effort just to keep something that you've already paid for

Ive been searching for those wheel clamplocks for bikes that hold the bike upright too- Ive Googled ' motorbike wheel clamp lock' and ventura wheel clamp' cos I thought thats who makes them but I cant find the thing Ive seen in the past. they have a trough that you drive the front wheel into and it rocks forward and locks and the bike is held- I think they are for in the shed but I have heard that you can also put them on the trailer- Is this right?

Thats great!- an inexpensive visual deterent!-If you lose your key , you just unscrew the turn buckle! That trailer looks desirable too! good tread on the tires

i just noticed, hes using them instead of tie downs

laserracer
13th October 2008, 14:18
Yep you can loosen the turnbuckles but only so far because of the padlock and the fact the other end is a closed loop, the only way to release the bike is to undo the padlock, buuut if you loose your key ...well yeah you are pretty much stuffed, this guy swears by it , mind you he is a yank so who knows,Ive been looking at making a system to lock the bikes to the trailer and do away with the bloody tiedowns, actually thinking about it the one with the turnbuckles if you jacked the bike up and could turn both turnbuckles at once you could probably undo them. but nothing is foolproof , i might try the turnbuckle thing with a few mods of my own and see what happens

I found a few of those photos in my search on the interweb, the ventura wheelclamp is not the one I have seen that was so good! It was similar, but this one had added plates on both sides so you couldnt pull the axle out and had some way of clamping the wheel down into it and locking. the Ventura one is really just a guide...

seems to me that www.offroadimports.co.nz steel core tiedowns are the only way to go!:Police:

Thats Them! - they are brilliant!- havent seen them in 10 years or so but they work really well. they have a little plunger lock on the other side that locks into a hole and stops you moving the locked lever.
they support your bike on the trailer too!- no tiedowns needed. And you have seen what my trailer looks like with six bikes on it. its like macrame!
