...pillion virginity that is!

After a most excellent day out at the WIMA ride and raising shitloads of cash for an absolutely worthwhile cause, I rode home, caught up with the wife and kids at the local park, played on the swings (and so did the kids) then shot home for a well deserved ginger beer.

SWMBO came home with the sprogs, then after depositing the spawn with me, popped up the road to do some retail therapy.

An hour or so later she was back.

I jokingly suggested she throw my corduras and spare helmet on, and that I'd take her for a spin - well bugger me with a pitchfork, she geared up!

Now, aside from our 6 year old going up and down the drive with me, I had never carried a pillion before, so I was a bit hesitant, but I'm sick of going to rides and leaving her at home, so bugger it I decided to have a go!

Well, the ride down the drive was a bit wobbly getting past the cars, but once we were out on our street I started getting the balance right and things were beginning to gel quite quickly so I headed off on a track I had decided would encompass several various areas of riding - suburban, open road and semi-rural.

Long story short...

I was aware of her hands hanging on securely for the first five minutes as we headed out toward Hunua Rd. When we hit the 70km/h zone and I rolled a bit more throttle on there was a definite increase of pressure, but the agreed "STOP!" signal was not given, so I carried on.

We headed toward Red Hill, and as we rounded onto the steep uphill section, I realised I could no longer feel her hands, nor could I see the shadow of two on the road due to the sun being behind us!

EEP! :shit:

I patted down my side, ever hopeful her insurance was paid up... errr, I mean that she was still there - thank god (dinner wasn't cooked yet) I found a hand, and patted it feeling very relieved...

Anyhoo, 5 minutes of pootling later and we were home.

Mrs Donor got her helmet off, and underneath was a huge grin... and I was/am stoked!

The thought of being able to share my bike with her is bloody awesome, I've wanted to be able to take her for a ride on the bike since I got the thing almost a year ago. So roll on the toy run I say - huzzah! (Though there will be mucho practice and short rides including motorway riding beforehand - one success does not an epic win make.)

I have to say, she is a natural on the back, no death grip, no natural tendency to try and lean against the turn and above all she feels great pressed against me...

...oh... and apparently I have to take her somewhere quiet so she can practice riding...

...errr... say what??? :shit:

I think the satisfaction I got in the 10 minutes we were out today, was more satisfying than all my biking time combined so far...

...and it boosted my confidence no end, I honestly thought I would never have the ability to take a pillion...

It's certainly a neat feeling being able to share your "interest" with the other half !
I've taken the wife (on pillion :spanking: :Playnice: :girlfight: ) a couple of times, and she has seemed to enjoy it, especially on the charity rides.

Kudos to you, Mr. Donor, for having a go! Pillioning is not hard - just..........different!

WTG Mr Donor!! Thats just brilliant!
I smiled right through your story - that was just so awesome!

I remember many moons ago when I hopped on the back of a bike for the very first time, my heart was in my mouth! You never forget your first time :eek5:
It didnt take long to feel the gentle sways of the bike and I hankered for more, more, more!
Each time I got on, my grip went from his waist, to the back bar to no holding on at all! Its an awesome feeling to sway with the bike with your hands in the air
I think alot has to do with the rider itself, and the trust held and going with the flow.

I kind of get the feeling, now that she wants to learn how to ride a bike, she ain't going to be a pillion for very long!!
 i know I wasn't!

Taking a pillion is just like riding a bike, except for the extra weight at take off and stop, braking and cornering, etc...:D Being confident in your own skills helps heaps. Yay for a new couple on A bike. Keep up the good work mate, Mrs Donor will be a convert in no time

You too eh?

I love being pillion, I dont ride anywhere near as fast as some, 10/15/20 over is fast enough for me. At 20 over I get some points and a fine (Cant afford the fine, and dont want the points). I am old fuddy duddy really. If we are out with the big boys, I wont ride. I get left behind which is fine, I am happy riding my ride, but when I get to a corner and there are a heap of blokes tapping their fingers waiting for me, it ceases to be fun. They roar off, I follow without a stop...LOL

I had the best ride today! With a few, they pissed off, I did my thing, we all got there....GREAT!

Nice story Donor. You were lucky the riding gods were looking out for you.

When I first took my other half out on our second vehicle it started out well on a sunny, calm early spring morning, until half way out to Waitomo a windy squall came out of nowhere and she was not so pleased with the experience, so we headed home. That and the truck that tried to use both lanes on one of the blind corners on the way back also dampened her riding spirit :shit:.

A few trips to pick up the car from the mechanic is all we have shared since and she has also gone off the idea of me ferrying the kids around town on the bike.. Sad to think we had 2 days of fun on a scooter in Rome in 40 degree heat with no problems a few years earlier.

Scarey huh? Perhaps I need you and the Mr down here to talk her out of it... *TUI*

Agreed, they were spoiling us yesterday - left over karma from the WIMA ride I am picking, so will still need to be on my toes!

Nice one!

Borrow the crusier mate, much gentler than your rocket o' doom!

Woohoo!! That's great to hear. I felt a touch nervous first time I took my son on the back but once underway there was really nothing too much to worry about, except what others have mentioned about allowing for the extra weight. The only other person who has been on the back with me is a girlfriend of mine (who hadn't been on the back of a bike in about 20 years) so I was a little nervous all over again taking her. Only "instruction" I gave her was don't wriggle around - then all I had to do to get over my nerves (yes I was a little nervous all over again) was remind myself I've already done it before, this was really no different. Good on ya, and especially to Mrs. Donor for giving the pillion seat a proper test ride!!:niceone:

That's a shame.
My wife had been on the bike a couple of times back in the mid '90s, and then not at all. I didn't push it, and it wasn't until she decided a few years ago she wanted to be more involved in what I was interested in that things changed. I took her for a couple of very gentle, careful rides - the first along the waterfront, stopping for a coffee. The next was just a brief one out in the countryside. Both were on "nice riding days" (warm, no hint of rain, no wind), and I made sure I wore the same as her (jeans, light jacket) so that she felt no more vulnerable than me, and vice-versa. After that, she started to really enjoy it, so I bought some gear for her, and she made me buy the VFR. A couple of years ago, she organised an Easter ride for us up to Cape Reinga and round about.:niceone:
Unfortunately, she hasn't ridden with me for a while now, but that's more because I haven't gone riding in the weekend for such a long time, and if we go somewhere together it's better to take the car (we can talk, listen to music, the weather doesn't matter, etc.)

Anyway, my point is, just take it easy, don't press the point, and encourage rather than nag. It has to be something you will both enjoy, and that will only happen if it's "her idea". Maybe you can just offer the odd invitation, like, "Hey - it's a nice day out; would you like to go for a ride, have a coffee, or whatever?"

Congrats Mr and Mrs Donor!

As a couple, it is awesomely cool to share the love of riding. I know XY and I had always enjoyed it, that is for 5 years until he got the "most Uncomfy SV"

Now, I'm riding on my own and he's missing me on the back :D

Wishing you both heaps of fun and shared enjoyment!

Yeah, doesn't GIJoe have a little 125cc she could pootle around on?? I've been taking Mrs Sparrowhawk out to deserted carparks on the flatmates Ginny, she's been loving it. I was thinking of taking her to that new development off Porchester on Saturday morning, they've just finished building the roads, but they're 'closed'. Wanna make it a double date?? :shifty: The girls could pootle around, and we can sit back and sip bundaberg
