View Full Version : A weekend to remember

Dunno bout you lot but that was one ell of a weekend

Just to set the scene a lil. Ive have had very little time off for the last 6 months with a new business (on duty 16 hours a day 7 days week), I finally got set free on Friday. Set sail on the mighty TL for Palmerston North. Got as far as Bulls when I had seen the FIFTH highway patrol  Twas good I was in no hurry :sweatdrop was easily the best mileage I had ever gotten from the TL thats for sure lol (at 191km's I put only 9 litres back in). Anyway so I pull into PN soon after & call into AFC motorcycles. 45 mins later I rode out on a ZX7R  I had semi pre planned it via one phone call two days earlier to Brenden, who seemed like a throughly nice chap.

Anyway so I call up Yod who had messaged me about catching up for a ride & told him what I had just done much to his surprise lol. Wasn't able to ride today as it was getting late & I was booked into a backpackers in Napier. So off I go heading north of PN for the first time ever, never been round those parts at all before so was well stoked to be exploring it all & on a new bike & man what a bike!! Fantastic back note & handles like a dream, especially after the TL lol, fark what a pig that is in comparison lol. Anyway so north bound we go through a few lil towns & onto SH50, had been recommended over SH2. Not a bad a road at all, not super twisty but still fun, very little traffic which is always nice.

Get to the backpackers & the owner has fluffed my booking & he is virtually full lol, obviously he is pretty embarrassed to do it to another operator. So he offers me a choice......both are free.....either have the spare room in his apartment or sleep on the top bunk in a 6 bed dorm.............................with 5 girls

Obviously I went for the dorm

Anyway so next day bright n breezy im up & ready to roll, had to wait for Yod to climb out of bed  He recommend I take the Middle Road from Havelock North & make my way to the (something a rather) pub (starts with a P), typical in the middle of bloody no where kiwi pub, great lil place with nice owners & friendly locals who entertained me while I wait for Yod who was delayed due to giving free road rules lessons with a not so willing cage driver who had almost taken him out lol.

Note: if you have never been on the "Middle Road" from Havelock North then I highly HIGHLY recommend it, good condition, smooth & wide with each corner leading to the next, what a fantastic piece of road! Anyway so after a chin wag & the respective oggling of each others bikes im lead by the mighty blackbird for mile after mile of back country roads, each new turn off through up a slightly different type of road & condition including meeting a couple of sheep & a squadron of turkeys ffs lol, 8 of the buggers, mum dad & ALL the kids. Slowed down enough to not be able to read the longest place name in the world lol. Finished up the ride in Dannevirke I think it was? where we had to help a poor bugger push start his KTM adventure bike (after about 5 farking goes lol, geez I was buggered running around in all that bike gear on a hot day).

Anyway so I head off back to Napier after farewelling Yod. Pretty uneventful ride back other than siting a few patrol cars on hella long straights (like 2km long buggers) parked up way way down off to the side of the road. Went passed him at a shade over a hundy, he had a good stare at me too he he.

Following day (today) I set out early, hit the road at 8:30 this time heading northwest to Taupo, again first time on that highway & loving it, hardly anyone around at that time of the morning. Pulled into Taupo in pretty good time & headed down the lake to Turangi then onto Taumaranui & down the famous SH43 "The Forgotten World Highway". By this time I am quite comfortable on the Kwaka & picking up the pace, not a soul on the road but me & a stinking hot day :woohoo:

Ended up being 1300km's in 3 days

WooT WooT for summer, its finally here, my there be many more like it.

Reckon we are pretty blessed to live in this part of the world & have the freedom we sometimes take for granted. Couldn't help but think how lucky we really are, it really hit me a few times while pondering lifes mysteries on the road.

Hope you all had a weekend as good as mine in your own way

Saw that one on TM and was tempted when I was looking for a new bike, but ended up going in another direction.

Glad you found Middle Road. That is one sexy area out there. Went for a ride with the Manawatu crowd doing all around that area and we passed the Ptangata Pub 3 times that day.

I hear you about SH50, there is better but when you're asking for a comparison between that and SH2 ... there is no comparison :)

Good stuff, enjoyed reading that and the new bike is very tasty.

Unfortunately, Mr Boob, after reading that I was so jealous I had to take off and enjoy Taranakis 22 degree sunshine. I was out for 6 hours when I shoulda been finishing the Bathroom  and as a consequence, I am now in the bloomin doghouse again!

Yer a bad influence dude  Fack it, I had a great time.

So am I, bloody fantastic roads :punk:

The TL IS a hooligans bike lol, no doubt. Just with stock suspenders they handle rather poorly when riden at pace. The 7 installs supreme confidence in the rider straight off the bat, I felt comfortable on it straight away

sleep on the top bunk in a 6 bed dorm.............................with 5 girls
Hahahaha. I like staying in backpackers. Occasionally I have been called to a conference or other such shitfight where other attendees have set themselves up in a hotel and I'm, like, mate - does your hotel have German chicks padding around in their PJ's for morning amusement? No, didn't think so.

So you run one too?

Oh, yeah, bikes. Nice bike :) Good work not getting stiffed by the cops.

Yeah you sure do have to with the TL, still have to with the Kwaka if at pace but its so much more predictable which I must say I do prefer.

I test rode this about 3-4 months ago. Very nice bike, has helped me decide on one i found cheaper in auckland. Hope the starting isnt a problem anymore. Wouldnt start at all the 1st day i went to test it and the 2nd it was a pain and then died on me out the back of palmy.

Not trying to stir shit just hope its sorted, it kinda put me off buying it.

Congrats tho it looks awesome and goes the same

Thanks mate, na no drama, whatever it was they sorted it by the time I saw it. Hasn't skipped a beat in nearly 1500km's since ive had it, starts first pop every time (with choke from cold of course), does stall if revved very early on in the warming up process so I just let her idle for a minute or two first.

Just sorted out the shudder coming through the bars under hard braking, seems it's warped disks, will confirm tomorrow with a dealer here in NP. AFC in Palmy North have said they will sort that out too (ie brand new replacements).

Must say im mighty impressed with AFC Motorcycles at this point, extremely good guys to deal with :niceone:
