View Full Version : Front wheel shake

Hi guys just wanting an idea on what the problem is likely to be.
Had a new front tyre put on recently - Shinko(I know I know not the best brand perhaps?) but over the weekend on the odd occasion I opened it up as soon as it hit 140 the front would shake quite violently. Not a side to side shake though as it seemed more of a vertical shake? Is this just balancing of the wheel? I don't travel at those speeds often but a concern it may be indicative of a problem that is not noticed at slower pace.
Cheers

It will be balance
I run Shinko, and have to have them balanced.
Had the same problem at 105kph, was a pain in the but, but kept my speed honest.
The tyre was put on right, ie the factory balance make at the valve, the balance should have been ok, but was not, balanceing fixed the virtical shake.
At 2oo clicks it ran true after that.
If that does not fix the problem, I would be looking at either steering head bearings or wheel bearings.

Thanks for that. Will have to take it in and get it balanced and see from there then.

also check what speed the tyre is rated for.....

also check that it has not got a deformed spot..some tires are not true in shape and speed will show this up....most shops balance once a new tire is fitted generally....update on what you find out..tha

Will do but may be a bloody week as no time to sort this week! Damn no big ride this weekend then....just the 2km commute! Shame bike shops aren't like Mcdees and open all the time....

ok so dropped by the shop quickly and they had a nosy at the tyre. No visible issues but he took of the little square weights that were on the rim. Bloody hell when I asked him to let me feel the weight I was surprised with just how heavy they were. Must have been maybe 100g or more(4 squares each side). So now have to find the chance to take it back up to said speed and see if any difference.

So they didn't balance it?! Road bike wheels should be balanced as a matter of course (dirt bikes too really, not that many people bother) and did they fit the tyre with the balance point (yellow dot on sidewall usually) in line with the valve stem?

I expected them to say lets whip it off and re-balance it but alas he said try it now without those and if no better bring it back........Just had a look and can't see any dot on side wall so not sure about that. Nothing visible in line with stem.

Yeah shitty effort alright. Gotta work today so no chance to test it out but hearing what you guys think I will probably take to another shop and get it balanced rather than go all the way over the hill to find a good bit of road to "test" it. Will update when sorted! Cheers
