Okay me and Mr Dopa are looking at going 50/50 in a race/ track bike.
We have two in our sights bvoth good money ie $1000- $1500 mark

I would like to know opinions on what the best will be.
I have another thread relating to this but I have a new bike in the fold so Ive started another

The CBR has done 53000kms trhe VFR has done 26000kms

Both in fairly good condition.

The intention is to do track days and I will enter in F3 Class

Look forward to your comments
Cheers

Even though KK is a Viffer freak, i think he would say go for the CBR as i am... The NC24 has crap brakes (ony 2 posts rather than 4) and shoddy rear suspension (i think???)

So i say go for the CBR..... if it was a NC30, i would say go the NC30.... But nup, go the CBR

Ahhh, ya don't need good brakes on a 400, they only slow ya down ;)
Was that the CBR400RR on Trade Me? Just check what size rim sizes they have, ideally 17 " rims would be best, as you should be able to pick up plentiful sticky or ex race S/H tyres, if an 18" rear less tyres available, you want to have a go on slicks if you get the chance. :Punk:
Ideally you should look for a ZXR400.....

Owned 2 V4's NC21 180 timing & NC30 360 timing . both great bike's but need to be keep in tune to get the best from them .CBR I believe would be a better track bike for over all Reliability , just from what I know from my V4's

For sure I'd be looking at the wheel sizes -18' wheels will make for restricted tyre size choice.
Hey I tell ya what dude--I'd give baby b a holla --hers may be coming up for sale-it seemed fast enough to me for a beginner bike.

I have had all the Honda 400's over the years (still got 4) and for a first race bike you probably couldn't get any better than a CBR(nc23). Suspension is crap but they all are, made for tiny japanese fella's to got to the shops on. There shouldn't be any problem getting 18 inch tyre's for the bike, dunlop bridgestone and metzeler all list them, just cos the shop hasn't got em doesn't mean they can't get em. Or try aussie, sometimes they're cheaper even with the extra you pay for freight.
There are a few wee simple (and cheap) tricks to make em go strong and they use to be almost competitive (before the dark times, before the SV's).
Coincidently I have a CBR400RR NC23 all set up for racing, for sale (also have a RVF400 NC35 race bike for sale but maybe be a bit dearer), and I could probably let CBR go for $1500...(arm twisting)...

You only want a VFR if its an NC30!!
or a CBR if its a RR,
Anything else is not fast enough fo F3.
But hey, depends on the rider in the end.

I don't know anything about racing but i do know the NC24 very well (pulled the bloody thing apart enough times!!) The CBR will out corner the nc24 any day, and as someone has mentioned, tune an nc24 right and they go like snot, but the slightest upset (especially if tipped over) and you'll spend long hours in the shed retuning.

Oooh but that nc24 firing order, music to my ears :love2:

there's always this (http://bikepoint.co.nz/Tig/Yard/Yard.aspx?UsedBikeID=506891&DealerID=388073&Alias=bikepointnz) and its getting cheaper... its actually a CBR400RRK.... goes alright!

Hmmm, interesting, Sensei too said he prefers the 180 crank for the sound. I've always preferred the 360 degree hypnotic drone of an NC30, RC30, VF750F Interceptor over the 180.

Well now Im looking at a 1992 GSXR400, its done 38000kms and is in good condition, TS tells me Mitch races one and it goes okay, ie she keeps up well.
I am interested in your opinions on this kind of machine

I love the aggressive racing sound of the 360 crank  360 all the way :msn-wink:

I have a nc24.Installed race tech gold valves and springs, which made a huge difference to the handling. Also fitted braided brake lines to the front which made a big improvment. It is so sweet to ride fast now. I think a well set up nc24 is a very capable bike. Good luck with your decision.

Ah bro, this question was asked 6yrs ago, if Bret hasn't made his decision yet I don't think any amount of luck will help him.

And for the masses ,
VFR is good if you have lots of $$$$$ and mechanical know how ,
CBR is good if you have a smaller budget and just by 450ing it its better and cheaper than a VFR.

I have built both and i prefer the CBR to ride as well .
