So when I first brought the bike the only gloves I could find that I liked and fitted ok were some xs mens gloves. I like them still but lately it has really started to bug me that the fingers are a little too long and I worry they will catch on the clutch or something stupid.
There doesn't seem to be a huge range about and buying over the internet is hard as I dont know my hand size?

So what's everyone else wearing. what are the sizes? what shops stock them etc.

You really need to try them on, rather than buy them over the Interdweeb or ask other people's suggestions. While I really like Spidi and Held, I'm not you, and my hands are different. (And yeah, I know I'm not a gurrrrl, but I'm bored, and just trying to help.)
I take it there's not many bike shops "in the middle of chaos"?

Chaos only exists inside the house...Outside is Pukekohe. There are a couple of bike shops in town.. just not found any gloves that fit in any of them.
And you are being very helpful, and do all the bored men serf about the biker angels forum?:bleh:

Umm... no, I actually just clicked on the "New Posts". I don't look at forum titles. I'm desperate for summat to do, so I don't have to resort to actual work.
With that "mechanic gloves" size thingo, be aware that sizes/shapes of gloves vary between brands, and aren't always even consistent within a brand and model. Even though my current glubses are very nice Held ones, the left and right ones are marginally different sizes. Maybe the 8 year-old sewing machine driver in the Held sweatshop was tired or had taken too many amphetamines on an empty tummy...

This is what my research thus far has confirmed.

Size is irrelevant. Black is the only colour of gloves. I have short fingers.

Black is the only colour of gloves.
Does that mean, "black is the only colour for me", or that it's the only colour you've found?
I've got black'n'grey gloves, black'n'blue gloves, black/silver/white/yellow gloves, but (as with my jackets) I'm sticking with black-ish gloves from now on. Coloured gear shows the road spooge too much.
If you could, I would check out Cycletreads, AMPS and Motomail for gloves - they all have a fairly extensive range, including gear sepcifically for female-type persons.

fingers are a little too long and I worry they will catch on the clutch or something stupid.

Strange....

The last time we went shopping for my fiancee's gloves (ie women's gloves) all the women's gloves had really really long fingers compared to the actual hand sizes.

I figured that this was so that it can accommodate for long finger nails and small hands... from what I've seen you'll have better luck with men's gloves for shorter fingers.

vifferman
14th October 2008, 10:14
Hmmmm...
If they weren't waterproof gloves, it'd be easy enough to have the gloves turned inside-out and the fingers shortened.
But on the other hand (or both hands...), you shouldn't have to do that.

I buy my gloves online and would use a chart similar to this:

I think it is to accommodate women like me who've got small hands with relatively long fingers. I'd have to go up a size if I let my nails grow

Bite the bullet and go shopping.
Some advice...if you have short fingers then you can probably rule out some of the Revit ladies range as I have long fingers and find Revit a perfect fit.

Another tip. Ya get what ya pay for...pay decent dollar and you will get a really good pair of gloves that live up to expectations and will last the distance.

Size small (men's) Alpinestars suit me. I'd call my hands average woman-size. Fingers neither long nor short.

As others have said, trying on is your best bet. I prefered the fit of the men's gloves to the ladies range. I felt that they were too snug and might contribute to my hands getting cold(er) due to lack of circulation. I haven't had any trouble with feeling the controls, and definitely no interference.

Just a thought, but maybe a leather worker could shorten the finger length of your current pair? Good luck in finding the best gloves for you!

Blossom .... you could always go to a reputable leather shop and have some made for you if they dont have any in stock that fit you?
I got mine from a leather shop and they are great!

Fingers on motorcycle gloves should be long, it's important that theres a load of room at the fingertips because during longer rides the fingers will naturally slide deeper, if the fingertips touch the end of your gloves or theres a tight spot then it can become a bit painful over time (extremely long rides).

Sounds just like me!
I have relatively large (for a female) palms and short fingers..can never get gloves that fit properly. I have a pair of Quasi gloves that are okay ish...not perfect, tho.
As for needing the fingers too long to allow for your fingers to slide deeper, wot a crock! All that does is cut off your circulation!

Gloves for women are very hard to get bang on, the reason is the range of hand sizes seems extensive, then you get the long finger nail scenario as well, women in my experience are way way more fussy than blokes when it comes to bike gear particulary gloves.
My advise is to try them on and go from there, we of course do gloves and can probably help you but you really need to come and try them out, or local shops.
As (I think) vifferman said the variance with sizes between makers is significant.

Our size chart is here

http://www.quasimoto.co.nz/info/size-charts

but they will be different to some other makers for sure.

If you are in pukekohe, then go and see Scott at MR Motorcycles, they are an Alpinestars stockist amongst other good brands - they quite likely won't have what you need in stock but would be happy to get some in for you to try. Alpinestars have a proper womens range called Stella.

I currently am using mens xs gloves as they were the best fitting gloves I could find at the time. They are however a good 2cm longer than my fingers. I actually am a bit of a sewer and I might try shortening them, I am sure I have a set of leather needles somewhere in the sewing room. Good idea :niceone:

There doesn't seem to be a huge range about ...

My husband would disagree - he reckons I am the Imelda Marcos of gloves! I have about seven pair and I love the Spidi ones best. Yes, they are expensive but they are soooo lovely to wear. I have small hands and short fingers and they make some lovely gloves that fit me really well.

Even though I don't need any more, I always check out the selection in bike shops and often find another pair I would love - only to be told I don't need them!

Question???? do you have to wear motorcycle gloves?
In summer i change to wearing my shooter gloves, kavlier lined leather and very good fitting.
I know that there are good selections of strong non motorcycle glove out there.

Answer yes, its different hitting the tarmac hands first at 100 kmph than standard working kinda duties. Reinforced stitching ,padding and armour are required.

I have small hands and small fingers and find there is often a good 1.5cm of glove left when i try them on. The best gloves i have are Schoeller ladies Keprotec by Revit. While they don't have armour they are made up of different levels of leather and are absolutely devine to wear. The fingers are a good size and there while there is room for my long finger nails it isn't huge.

I have small hands and find quasi's gloves just right in the fingers but too wide in the palms they slip so then I lose grip on the throttle unless I'm holding on for dear life. No offence there Quasi.

I currently have Schoeller PCM Revit Female Fit gloves (Size S), and absolutely love them. However mine are winter gloves and are getting a little too hot to ride in currently so I'm also on the hunt for some summer gloves. Will let you should I find something just as good with less lining.

I do have very small fingers.. I have the same size hands as my girlfriend who is 4 ft 5in and has a type of dwarfism so yeah I have small hands.

In the end I just got out the sewing machine and shortened the glove fingers.. Working well so far but I will probably get another pair for summer.

None taken, gloves are tricky because of the huge range of varibles with peoples hands, wide palms, narrow palms, thick or thin, long fingers short fingers, odd length fingers, finger nails even, the list goes on, so from a makers point of view its very hard to cover of all sizes.
its really a matter of taking advantage of all the differences in sizes from different brands to get one thats right for you.
Good luck

My hand measures 6 cm across the knuckles and 16 cm from bottom of palm to tip of middle finger, so buying gloves that are warm, supple, but protective for riding is very difficult, I have to take my glove off to be able to press the switch for the heated grips as otherwise the glove's finger just bend over itself. Yes, I do have issues with reaching the clutch and brake comfortably, and my feet are size three. Let's not even start on finding decent boots. I'm probably only good for fruit picking though (according to Lockwood), but I'm not asian! You just have to keep on trying, and trying, and trying on gloves, I'm sure there will be a pair out there for my hands someday!

I have short fat fingers, my best fitting gloves are a pair of dririders, but other Dri Rider are hopeless. One suggestion I have seen if you have short finger and don't like the space at the end, is to put a small ball of cotton wool into the end of each finger to fill it out. I do find over time as gloves loosen up and scrunch up a bit.

Oh yeah - I read the "customising" post. More'n one pair of glubz? Hmmmm... could become a habit. I've got an "unknown number" of pairs of gloves (I hate to throw things away when they're 'old') but tend to wear only two pairs regularly (but not at the same time), and occasionally wear a pair of the older ones... because.... um.... dunno really. Just because I can?
My current gloves are some Held gloves (can't remember the model), some Spidi SportComp H2Out gloves when it's cold and/or wet, and I occasionally wear my Spidi Ravens (lightweight waterproof ones) or Spidi Pro-1 (lightweight non-waterproof, yellow/black/white/grey), or an old pair of AGV gloves (very lightweight, and very blue!), or some old black leather gloves (semi-waterproof, and semi-hated) because the ferkn things won't wear out, despite being used for chores around home.
I NEVER wear my Orina waterproof gloves, coz they're complete and utter shit. I may have chucked them in the bin, or else they're lurking in the depths of my bike gear cupboard, waiting to attack me one night...:eek5:
I've also got some ski gloves, and could talk about the suitability of bike gloves for skiing, and ski gloves for biking, but we won't go into that, coz that would be off topic(ish).

It's no big deal. Next to your head, your hands are probably the most vulnerable part of you when you're riding, and very sensitive to cold and damage. I haven't had to justify it yet, but it'd be easy to do: if I wrecked my hands, I couldn't work. More to the point, it'd be very hard to post crap on KiwiBiker. Then where would you all be? :eek5:

No - don't answer that; it was a rhetorical question....
