Round 5 loomed as the big 2 day event. Frenchy and I head down for the test day as it had been almost 2 months since some proper track time. Tweety was awesome in testing, smooth and I felt good, sun was shining, I actually wanted a bit of sun so we could have some good racing. A birdie had told me the ShowerBuddy CBR had more horses, I was quietly excited to see!
Day 1:
After an awesome spa bath the night before, I was relaxed and ready for a good day in the sun racing. Maybe a little too relaxed.
F3 Qualifying:
As it was a 20 min session, I rolled out after the grid had left so I could keep my tyres warm and have some clear track from the start. Was a good plan as I had lots of space however it only took a lap or so before the big boys came flying by. Each time I thought I had got a hot lap in I would decide to do one cool down and would end up going faster on that lap so I stayed out a lot longer than I intended, turned out lucky as my fastest time was the 2nd to last lap, I qualified 21st with a 1:24.6. Not the best, but hey, it only tells you where you start from.
Post Classic Qualifying:
Same theory going for PC qualifying as F3, the bike ran mint in scrub, so I was looking forward to my best qualifying this season as it had grown some straight line acceleration and speed. Long story short, I spent a few laps getting used to the new pull of the CBR and as I sped up she started coughing a bit so I did the best I could, qualified 25th on the grid (not my worst qualifying) with a 1:28.2.
As my memory isn’t good on a good day, here’s a wrap up of the weekend’s results and a few comments:
F3 race 1, 15 laps: 12th best time: 1:23.0
PC race 1, 15 laps: 14th best time: 1:24.7
Day 2
F3 race 2, 20 laps: 13th best time: 1:22.2 (in the last lap!!)
PC race 2, 20 laps: 15th best time: 1:23.6
F3 race 3, 8 laps: 8th best time: 1:22.3
PC race 3, 6 laps: 13th best time: 1:25.3
Highlight of the longer races was my PB for the weekend, a 1:22.2 in the final lap of the 20 lapper in F3 and my fastest Posty’s time for the weekend also, dropping the CBR to a 1:23.6. The final F3 race was a total blast dicing with 3 other 400’s, was awesome battling with Chris who usually leaves me for dead. Must say sorry to Tim Baker from down Chch way for bumping your back tyre round T2 in the last Posty’s race and the SNR dude who’s throttle assembly I ran over after it fell off his bike in the same spot!
Was awesome to see Clive picking up the pace, I’ll have to start pulling finger I think… and Stevie is back to his lightning pace and usual antics of running off the track!
A good weekend overall with a 10th in F3 and 13th in Post Classics. I’m happy with my results and that I’m improving in the dry. I’m totally looking forward to the penultimate round 6 which is not far away at all. Thank you as always to the VMCC organizers and volunteers, none of us like to experience what we did on Saturday, but I have the utmost appreciation for all involved in looking after my friends and fellow racers and keeping it as safe as possible for us.
Big thank you to Paul and Di, the awesome Showerbuddy team, was awesome to see Dave and Donna from Kiwibike Insurance, Kerry too, hope we gave you guys some entertainment! Dunlop tyres and Bikestore.co.nz, you guys rock too. Last but never least, huge thank you to my man Frenchy who now holds the garage record for most offs in one meeting, go hard babe!
Not long till Saturday!!!!
