got a spare key for the rr cut the other guy, the guy is a biker, knows his stuff etc.. he showed me the official silica honda bike key blank, it was slightly different - one of the grooves is roundish rather than square.

I took the key anyway, got home, put it in, turns the bike on, but not fully (cant hear the fuel system doing is whirring check thing), and of course it will turn over but not start. It opens all the other locks too.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

chur.

The original may have a magnet or a chip in the key and ignition (its an anti theft thing) and they have to match ... thats why it can open the other locks as well

or

if its for an older bike that don't have this... its just cut wrong.

I wouldn't worry about that. If it turns out to be the case then you will probably realise within 5 minutes and it will cost you no more than $10

An original RFID chip key blank for my volvo was only $70, it costs around $30 to get it 'tuned' to the ignition though.

All I know is if I loose both my keys to the VTR its $90-$100 (maybe more) to get a new one from Honda. and Honda will only give the key out once or twice and if you loose it again then you have to get a new ignition...

or something like that

What do you mean by only $70 for a key blank?

That's larceny.

Mate of mines on an '08 CBR600RR and we were just having this conversation about an hour ago... Honda quoted him $3k if he looses both keys as they wont reprogramme new keys. So would have to replace the ignition.

Course I cant claim if that's actual fact or the dealer trying to scare him into not loosing his keys

$70 thats fookin cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!1 the Mrs bust her key (if you can call it that) for her Merc and a replacement took 10 days and $500 FFS!!!

Keys are high tech these days with passive gizmo's imbedded in them.

Morcs you've only had the bike 5 mins, you lost a key already?

Fact. If you lose all of your keys you need to replace the ECU which is over $2k. Definitely something you don't want to do!

As long as you have a key in your possession you can use it to program a blank for a small fee. $50-60 or somesuch.

No, but lost the keys for the TL about 3 week ago. Didnt enjoy the entire day hunting, and then pulling the barrell out and going round various locksmiths...

so as a preventive measure, getting a 2nd key made :D

Your local Honda dealer will be able to programe the key to your bike within 10 minutes.
Its not a biggy at all.

Just give them a call and they should be able to help.
It needs a special tool to plug into your bike to code it in.

bit of dredging, but oh well

It completely depends on the model of bike, how the manufacturer goes about setting up the security.

On the basic level, my zx7r. Take original key to any locksmith, he cuts another from a standard blank key. No immobiliser built in at all.

Next level up, my 04 zx10r. Order a blank Kawasaki key from the dealer, then take that to a keycutter who duplicates the original. Not sure why

HISS and other full immobilisers. They vary a little on rules, but basic thing is ECU knows about its keys. It has to be programmed when another key is added (addition depends on manufacturer, with some, you can add a key yourself, others, the dealer has to). You also have to get a key from manufacturer. Here it varies again. Some systems, you have a limit of keys, sometimes 2, maybe 4, maybe no limit, but perhaps a concurrent limit on ecu. How they store extra keys varies. Sometimes the dealer keeps a key, but generally, the bike has specific keys for it, different to the next one in the production line. Usually you need a specific code to order keys.

At some point, if you love losing keys, it will probably be game over, and time for a new ecu, lock set etc.

Try not losing your keys

if it has HISS and it is the same as mine as far as im aware you need to order a new key through your local honda dealer

Only if they have the right cable. Pretty much each bike needs a different cable to enable the ECU to be programmed. You could look for the info yourself, and save some time, effort, hassle and disappointment.
