How many of you used this reason (read "excuse") when you bought a bike? I for one, did just that....."I need a bike cause gas is sooooooooo expensive now....I can save $30 a week if I buy a bike....".......And does it save petrol? Welllllll....yes, in that it goes three times as far on a litre of gas as does the cage......but this week I emptied a tankful in just three days - mainly by hooning about the countryside each morning before work.....like the 90km loop I did this morning...and yesterday.....and the day before........and so it goes. Overall I probably use more gas now than before I had the bloody bike........but I also have a helluva lot more FUN!!!! So sod the budget I say........

LOL. Yep, you seem to use bikes a hell of a lot more just for fun than you would a car. On them every chance you get :)

The bigger bikes cost a hell of a lot more to run than a car when you ride them just for fun and fast :(
Service periods come around a lot quicker, tyres cost me a fortune with an average of 3500kms a rear and 7,000kms a front.

If I had known a well used large bike consumes tyres at that rate when you can get 30,000-35,000kms on average out of a set of hoops on a car I would have thought twice about getting back into biking. It's keeping me broke LOL

3500 k's out of a rear? How??? I get 1,000 k max, and thats assuming that I don't do any track days. Plus the gixer uses more gas than the cage (about 10k/l ish). But, I spend less time in traffic, and I smile more, so the money is largely irrelevant.

I love my Scoot. had to drive to work yesterday, swore like a trucker the whole way. Ride to work this morning, smiled the whole way.

Okay, so I've always wanted to ask this, but I've never had the bravery. Can we just pretend their is a bubble of safety in this forum, and no idea or statement is bad or can be mocked. Here is a post I did a while back about saving fuel and biking:

I have editied to pop in the correct fuel savings:

Looking for some free biking?
I mentioned in another thread that my wife spends $100 per week just running around the local Bays..

It got me thinking – and we went and grabbed her a little scooter (AN125 Suzuki).

After looking at the figures (albeit it in a simple manner and I did this as a quick brain dump so forgive me if there is a mistake) - here is a awesome way to save some serious $$$$

Scooter $2700 including on road cost for 6 months
Second 6 months registration to give 12 months riding $177
Insurance for year (3rd party via AMI) $27 (Yep – serious $27 – laughed my ass off)

Assuming that we don’t have a crash or have it stolen second hand values for similar types of bike are around $2200 for a 1 year old bike.

So total cost for 12 months – resale in 12 months gives a total cost of $704.

Looking at our fuel bill – we have been saving $70 per week in petrol *. – a total saving of $3640

So the ROI on the bike is 10 weeks – giving me 42 weeks of free biking in the first year.

It gets better the second year

Second hand resale is about $1700.
Additional years rego $ 285.
Additional years insurance $27

So my total running cost to cover the second 12 months is $612 ($500 for the additional depreciation + rego + insurance). Weekly savings stay the same *.

Total cost for the 2 years is $1315 with a total saving of $7280.

Meaning that the ROI over the 2 years is 19 weeks – giving 85 weeks of free motoring.

Looking further ahead - they dont depreciate much in years 3 + 4 (say 150 per year) so this is almost free motering for both years.

***If fuel prices stay the same – if they go up the savings get better and better.

Believe me that 3500kms on GSX1400 rear is bad and that's no track days or burnouts. Others on the 1400 forum are getting mainly 7,000 a rear and up to 15,000kms. :shit:

.... LOL

Today I changed the rear tyre that had been on the bike since March this year.

23,000 km on that tyre and still a few thou left before the tread went . It had squared off and I planned on changing it next week but a puncture put paid to that.

Suzuki GS1200 SS with lots of torque.

I suppose I'm just easy on the throttle and dont often exceed 120 kph .

Take that as ride like an old lady.

Front tyres usually last me half as much again in km's

To save money? Yeah, right!
It's just an expensive toy! Although it does save me time commuting, and it also saves the baby lesbian Afghani fur seal whale penguins.
And my sanity. Oops... too late... :o

Like others have said, although it gets a better fuel mileage than any of our cars (especially that there 205 GTi), that's not why I bought it. If I could swing it, I'd buy a commuterscooter (or smaller bike) just for getting to work and back. Apart from saving fuel/money (and the baby lesbian Afghani fur seal whale penguins ), it would mean I don't prematurely wear out the VFR (oops...too late...) and don't get sick of riding it all the time. Then I could use the VFR just for weekend jaunts. As it is, by commuting on it all the time, I don't feel much like riding it in the weekend...

A guy at my work bought a brand-new 07 ZX6R so that he could save on gas for his commute (only 20k's each way).

I kept trying to convince him that if he's not gonna ride it for the fun factor he still needs to learn what the bike's limits are, cos an idiot WILL pull out in front of him that he'll need to avoid.

He's quite happy riding this cutting-edge sportsbike under 4000rpm everywhere on the middle of the tyres. It's like rap music - I just don't geddit

Its amazing how fast you can go through go-gas when all you want to do is ride, ride and ride! :ride: Some days I will fill up my tank 3 to 4 times in the same day! :woohoo:

Naw my 650 does nearly 70mpg. Only 1/3 more to get into scooter territory.

But yeah, strangely as I get more experienced its fuel economy is getting slowly worse, haha. 15,000km on a rear tyre - next tyre will go a bit quicker I am sure, heh.

I had no clue about the bikes' economy when I bought it. I rode it home (350km) and it took 15 litres.

True that.

You will save on filling up if you have a bike as a full tank on a bike is much cheaper than in a car. But, due to riding being so much more fun than driving a cage, you'll probably find yourself filling up far more often.

I get about 21 k per litre when riding 'quickly'. Waaaayyy better than the 8k that I get in my cage. No matter how much I ride during the weekend, as long as I'm commuting on my bike, I can't seem to get it to cost more than my car was when it was my sole vehicle.

Bugger the fuel economy... I have a fast comfortable bike with heated grips and seat and panniers... tehn I have fast as hell, pretty uncomfortable bike for those adrenaline filled (or is that my pants?) moments and top it all off with a scooter which although cheap to run is also easy to park, costs bugger all, and is rapid grin producing commuting.

My 250 honda goes forever on a tankful, like 1 litre for 1 1/2 hours hooning.
the SV1000 would use 10 times that, but about 10 times the acceleration.

I am getting 5 l /100km from the Hornet if I ride semi legally and riding hard it goes up to mid 6's. All my friends and I have two way radios in our helmets. I have a push to talk button on the bars. I sing to myself all the time. It usually makes no sense (repeating the same few lines over and over, jumping between songs, etc.) and I'm a terrible singer.

One time I had the PTT switch malfunction and stick on.

My friends were treated to ~30min. of me butchering a few songs before someone chimed in and told me to shut the fuck up. Tinted face sheilds are amazing when you don't want anybody to see how red you have turned.

Given equivelant amounts of caging and riding I still spend more money on the bike. Maintenance costs on modern sport bikes SUCKS if you do everything to the letter.

Europe is over-rated (full of sleazy Dagos and frogs (excuse the racist slur)). And I would have written Germans in there as well, but I met this really hot German waitress last night (while I was having dinner with MadBikeBabe) who made me rethink all the mean thoughts I've had about Germans. yes, in that it goes three times as far on a litre of gas as does the cage......but this week I emptied a tankful in just three days - mainly by hooning about the countryside each morning before work.....like the 90km loop I did this morning...and yesterday.....and the day before........and so it goes.

Actually, I can see your problem. What you really need now is a GPS to help you find the direct way to work

I don't sing but I do a joy wobble to warm up the tyres on mornings when the weather is great and I am going over the harbour bridge and its bloody awesome.
on windy days I say aloud " I laugh at you wind, ha ha ha ha" cause when I first started riding it made me laugh and not so shit scared.

Today I changed the rear tyre that had been on the bike since March this year.

23,000 km on that tyre and still a few thou left before the tread went . It had squared off and I planned on changing it next week but a puncture put paid to that.

Suzuki GS1200 SS with lots of torque.
