The speed limit in Tavullia, central Italy – Valentino Rossi’s home town – is to be reduced from 50mph to 46mph (his racing number), in a tribute to the multiple world MotoGP champion.

Rossi handed over £500,000 to civic funds in his home town, to settle a dispute with tax officials

A spokesman for the local council said: "We are really happy about the cash and it will be put to very good use. He is the town's most famous son and it is wonderful that he has given us this money. Changing the speed limit is a fitting tribute to a man who has made his fame and fortune entirely out of his skills on the road."

I thought it was a great move on his part - rather than hand it over to Mr Taxman, he got to give the money to his hometown, so they benefit.

Ironic though - just finished reading his autobiography... and sticking to the speed limit there definitely WASN'T something he did!

In Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas there's a sport bike found in one of the parking buildings, it has a 46 on it as a tribute to Rossi. It's the fastest bike in the game, and possibly the fastest land based vehicle.
