I'll be on the KLR and presumably Glen will be on the DT230

Provided there hasn't been a lot of rain in the week before the Karapoti-Mungatook section should be doable by big bikes.

Odlins Rd would have to be tackled on a 'suck it an see' approach.

I'm suggesting a 10 am meeting at Karapoti with late lunch at Paraparaumu Beach followed by a cruise up to Waikanae/Riekeonrangi and going as far up/down Oldins Rd as everyone feels comfortable then maybe a ride through the aka's and a drink in Upper Hutt?

Love to marks but I will be away again spending the weekend with my bro'.

Have fun while I'm away.

You boys bothering with permits for that area these days? Mine always seems to run out too quick.

OK, I've got a set of full knobbies that were part used on the CCA so that should be good.
Will start prepariing a business case with management.

Decent tires make such a difference on the slippery clay shit.

Glen and I might do a reconnaissance on the Saturday on our trail bikes to make sure were not getting in over our heads.

Hey Mark, the weather dosen't look that flash but what the hell.....have we got a plan yet?

It all comes down to how much rain falls in the days before Monday - that track is a bitch a couple of places if the clay is all greasy.

I'll have a poke around on Sat or Sun and see how big bike friendly it is.

If the main track is too nasty we could ride in from the Karapoti end and explore the track that leads to the Rock Garden. Anyone got any 'Plan B' ideas if we chicken out on 'Plan A' ???

DOnt worry about the rear brake - if the clay is slippery brakes wont make any difference

I was UH side last week end and was alright. Nice to explore a few small tracks at the side of the main road.

If Motorad have the new rings fitted and I can give it a quick run-in I hope to be attending. (They said it *would* be done today...I'll believe it when I ride it away from the shop)
BTW got another recall notice from Lyntech yesterday, this one for the indicators to be replaced.

so have you got your bike back?

Anyways - went up the Mungatooks this afternoon and it was pissing down and everything was wet wet wet. I think its unlikely to be dry enough for a ride with big bikes on Monday same would most probably apply to Oldins Rd as well.

Can anyone think of any alternatives for Monday - I still want to go for a ride.:scooter:

We could have a look at Red Rocks or see how far we can get up the beach starting from Peka Peka road

if we can get across the first small river north of Peka Peka we should be able to get back onto the road at Te Horo beach then pop onto Sims Rd and at the end of that ride the track that goes a few K's to the Otaki River mouth and part way up the south side of the Otaki River.

Just a thought...

we if no one can come up with anything better we could meet at 'The Front Room (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=front+room+waikanae+beach&fb=1&view=text&latlng=3272006856306824627) (42 Tutere Street Waikanae Beach) for a coffee at 10.30 ?

Head up to Peka Peka and try and get all the way up to the Otaki River mouth. Another coffee at Otaki and an explore at Otaki Beach/north side of river mouth and if that was fun then back the way we came.

More of a potter than a ride - but its either that or going somewhere like the Wairarapa which I don't really want to do because of all the idiots on the road.

thoughts?

You could always add a trip up to Shannon, and up the Mangahoe Dams if you want to add something to what you have suggested already.
I probably can't make it along to this one, so have fun guys whatever you decide to do.

If we go up the beach, it would be fun to see how far up we can get.

Wanganui anybody :)

My tyre choices are mostly worn but still road legal K750s or full knobbies (not road legal but who's checking?)

Would the k750s be adequate for the plan B ride?

Obviously I got the bike back yesterday - goes great, a bit soon to see if it's using oil but nothing leaks from the filter cover.
They gave it a quick valve grind along with the new guide seals so that can't have hurt.
Talked to Brendon for a while - he is using the demo '09KLR as his current ride.

Hey pete

I've only been a couple of ks up that beach.
For that part it was mostly hard packed sand, very easy to ride on.

But the river might be up and the sand could be harder to ride on as we get further up.
I've got half worn TKC80's on the GS, not sure what Mark is running

Sorry that you cant make it Paul.
The Mangahoe Dams is a great idea - always wanted to have a poke around there - well see how everyone feels after we've done the beach bit.

I would leave on whatever is already on. If the beach bit turns nasty and your tires arent up to it its only a 15minute road detour to meet at Te Horo Beach.

The worst that can happen is we abandon you - buried in the sand - waiting for the tide to consume you....

I've got a TKC80 on the front and a mitas E09 on the back of the KLR.

My son Glen will be there on the DT230 - he can be the 'canary' - we just won't tell him.

so I'll be sitting over a bowl of latte at the Front Room at 10.30 tomorrow - unless its raining in which case I will post here before 9.

Did the gear lever stay on this time????

We were up in the Mungatooks yesterday and it was wet wet wet

You never know but it wasn't too wet, was reasonable dry and it seems not as wet as some of the bits u were through today

Bizarrily enough the lever and all the rest stayed on the bike and thankfully and strangely I didn't fall which is probably the second time it happens while @ Karapoti.

Although didn't go as far as Mungatooks. I'll wait to go with you ...:mobile:.

Today did a very quick run ... about an hour an half across and back trying to improve my time and stay out of my record 'most amount of K on first gear without using throttle while panicking constantly'

Knowing is ok is almost like ... like the E&C way, followed by two 4x4 one helicopter, a mechanic, a medic, a fixer, a priest ... :chase:

Cheers,
Pampa

Janine and I had heaps of fun, really cool to meet other bike nuts. The old A/T went better than I expected but man we had saw ass's with not being able to stand up.

Wow the photo's are great, I do remember been sprawled out on the ground and Mark restraining from taking photo's until after he asked whether we were alright (between laughter of course). How Jim got his BMW across that river is beyond me it looked like it vanished but Pete's Kawi did disappear lol. That was an awesome fang along the beach.

Look forward to coming out for another ride, great peeps to ride with...

cheers Mark and Janine
