A few questions to all you 2 strokers out there. I know Reckless will have a view so nows the time to air it. here's the questions:-

1. Now I have some 2 strokers how do I get that castrol R smell without gumming up and stripping the engines every time we go out?

2. Will I end up ruining them by using an inferior castor based oil. Presently running Motul 800 in them.

3. Can you just 'throw' in a bit of castrol TTS or 747 ( say 10%) just to get the smell and make up the rest with Motul 800?

I haven't used any castor in the KDX, but I sometimes put a little in my lawn mower....Aahhh the nostalgia..... I had a Suzuki TM125 and a Suzuki TR250 back in the early '70s that I ran on castor... The smell takes me back to Porirua, Gracefield, Wanganui, QE2 park, Te Marua etc..... etc.. To put some straight castor in your new bikes, duno, it's a very "dirty" oil, although it only takes a few drops in the mower to get "that" smell... A747 on the other hand should be good....Pricey though.... TTS contains no castor

castrol R i believe is a 4t engine oil?

castrol tts is a 100% synthetic 2t mixing oil. best thing for your bike. also cheaper than motul. smells good. available anywhere- ive been running it since 1994 and still never had a meltdown or any other engine isssue in my CR's

All you need to do is put a teespoon of R in your tank and enjoy the smell.

Castrol dont make 100% synthetic oil as I understand it, only highly refined mineral oils, they use the word synthetic but it aint, see court case castrol vs Mobil

Yes I work in the Industry for Mobil.

Try Mobil 1 racing 2t its the best

Castrol R is a castor based oil that can be run as an engine oil or as as a premix, although it does not premix well, (acetone is often used as a blending agent, and i am pretty sure it does not mix very well at all with unleaded) and the modern MX bikes go better on synthetic oils like TTS or 800 2t,

but man does Castrol R smell good, a trip to rosebank road speedway is worth is for the smell alone,

ok. you make a point. but im still guna pimp castrol TTS.

cheap, effective. "close enough to synthetic"

ok you asked??
Castrol R is a Castor based oil that's where it gets its smell. I also have some MSSR here I used when racing methanol. You needed Toluene as well to make the Castor mix when using Avgas. MSSR is basically straight Castor oil you can pretty much eat it although I've never done so. In the old days (Honda 750 four) we used to buy castor oil from the local pharmacy and but a dash in to make our bikes smell like the racing ones of the day, which a lot where 2smokers. We used Castrol R because its a damn good oil for compression and because after many seasons of racing the deposits in the bowl in the head gave you slightly higher compression in the Cadet class. They cc the heads in other classes to make sure your within the rules.
To answer your question you will get a slight build up if you use Castrol R but you certainly won't have to strip the engines every time you ride. Castrol R is a very good oil. You will get better ring seal with it than the modern synthetics. It does leave more deposits but as long as you strip and clean everything every 50-100 hours on the KDX and bit sooner on your KX it shouldn't cause you any more maintenance than your usual maintenance. Probably just have to spend a little more time cleaning the deposits off the power valve and the ring groove (if your leaving the piston in) than when using Synthetics or non Castor based oils.

Scott I never had a problem with Castrol R not mixing with petrol?? Even when left on the shelf for a week it never seperated. Now avgas and methenol where different but none of us ever used a mixing agent with Castrol R and petrol. Unless the petrol make up has changed drastically in the last few years. Can't see it being a problem on an MX bike anyway you couldn't shake the tank up more then we do on a ride. And you couldn't push an engine much harder than a Karter does!

i would reccomend a modern synthetic over castrol R anyway, its cheaper and much easier to get (although i do stock castrol R)

i thought it seperated easy, however when my old man was running it he was messing around with methonal as well and that is why my wires might be crossed,

Could be handy to have a bottle of oil that I can eat around if I run out of food one day, and that happens alot!<_<

Actually Scott I must confess to running Motul in my bikes as well. Mainly as I get it wholesale from a mate of mine. With the kart engines we had them stripped so much, build up wasn't an issue and we ran them a lot harder than MX bikes run.
Still for the type of riding Me and Andy and the rest of us do Castrol TTS or some of the other not so exoticly rated oils are perfectly fine. If I didn't get my Motul at a good deal I'd be perfectly happy running TTS. Jeepers a ring set is only 30 bucks and you'd do way more damage if you didn't clean your filters. Thats the main thing clean your air filter properly after every ride!!!! Unless your running a 2smoker maxed out like we did when Karting. And I mean max revs every gear, no clutch, motoplat advanced ignition curves and compressions just short of detonation any damn 2smoke oil on the market is fine. I'd lay money that TTS, the outboard motor branded stuff and the Chainsaw oils are all the same just repacked for different markets. A 2 stroke is a 2 stroke no matter what it powers!!
There's some food for thought Andy?? LOL!!

That's because pump gas is loaded with toluene and xylene, to cheaply boost the octane rating. The castor oil will mix quite nicely with those.

Reckless I would have thought a two stroke that is used for putting around the trails would require a cleaner burning oil than one that is used under hard conditions like MX or karting. Obviously a harder working bike is going to burn of more of the deposits than a putter. So you might be able to use an oil that creates more deposits if your thrashing it all the time. If putting you don't want the deposits to build up so you would use a cleaner burning oil.
Motul 800 for me. Although I do intend to test some Silkolene Comp II Plus when my current stocks run out.

Yep. An old 'trick' to keep the wannabes guessing. I used to do this back in 1973 in my (totally stock) TS125, and when I kept up with the TS185 boys, they'd say 'No wonder..."

Oh and by the way, No, I wouldn't mix different oils (castor VS another) you might find they don't like each other. If your going to try it do your petrol/oil/oil mix in a glass bottle and leave it overnight to see if they seperate.

Yes Danger I totally agree! But if Andy wants the "SMELL" he has to spend a little more time to clean the deposits off at each piston change. Like you for this reason I use Motul. Although I wouldn't have a problem putting Castrol R in for a few months. If you where trying to get 400 hours outa the bike you'd have more likelihood of the build up from the Castor based oil locking the rings in the groove and causing a seize or jamming the power valve movement before your next maintenance strip down to clean it up. Under normal check it every 50/100 hour conditions Castrol R would be OK in my opinion. Mind you we do ride Ktm200's which do have big strong 2 ring pistons in!!

Now I gotta do some work!! Check in later!
