Make up a really good excuse as to why its unsafe for you to ride a 250.
The key is making it sound unsafe as possible as they don't give out exemptions for inconveniences.
Too be honest tho, i doubt you'll have much luck.

Agreed...not very tall and only a skinny wee fella.

Your age is your biggest enemy here. You'd need to be 6'5" and a minimum of 130kgs fro them to take you seriously I reckon.
I wish I hadn't posted in your other thread now.
16. Harden up and take your time growing up. Fekking enjoy it because it can all go wrong really quickly.

FWIW, I would agree with James Deuce on this - you're young and impatient for that time to pass. Trust me, unless you meet with an untimely end you'll be an "old person" for plenty enough years to enjoy bigger bikes. Without a pressing reason for the powers that be to "legally allow you to break the law" it's probably a bit of a moot point for you anyway.

Yup I have to agree with the others here do your time on the 250s, and work your way up through the ranks, though you are lucky to be in Taupo, as you will be easily able to attend track days, and learn alot from them.

I have to fully disagree here.
The size does not matter.
It is how you use it.

Ah, now, you're in luck.
Gene-o-Kleen ("Evolution you can see") are running a special promotion for the start of the season.
With every twin-pack giant economy size of Gene-O-Kleen ("Evolution you can see"), you receive a coupon that can be exchanged with LTNZ for an exemption allowing you to ride a litre bike, regardless of age or experience.
Look for the special promotional packaging, from suppliers everywhere.

Well... I started as a 12 yo. At 16 I rode a 500cc. At 18 I rode a 750.
Again:
"It is not the size that matters, it is how you use it."
When I got my oldest to start riding I got him A NZ250. They go OK as standard. But we worked on the thingy. And got her to easily do 180. And I have to be honest, she was a 1 cylinder no weight bike. And would leave most bikes behind. Even I (and I have been riding speedway) went: "WOW!!!"
So again, size is not a factor. It is the way you ride.
And to the ones who have red blinged me for my earlier posting:
Don't be so fuckin PC. Not that I give a shit re your red blings.

The money spent on applying for the exemption would perhaps be better spent finding why said brakes locked, be it rider or machine :)

Gremlin managed to get an exemption and he's built like a splinter. However it sounds like you're a wee bit over confident so I wish you well and hope we're all wrong.
I'm 38 years old and have had compliments heaped on me by other more experienced riders about how well (and above all safely) I handle a bike and yet I don't want any more than 53hp.
you have to ask yourself why you want a 'bigger' bike. If it's coz of cramp then try a Hyosung GT250R. I'm a piddling wee fella at 1.83 and 95kg and I survived life on a VTR250.....

Well, its $18 for an exemption, given their strictness and how they look at age and riding experience, i believe that $18 is better spent going 2/5ths of the way to a course like RRRS. Or the cost of brake fluid if he has to clean out the calipers. I'd rather not see a new guy barrel roll down the road because his brakes locked, or a 50/250/ 600/thou do the same because nobody suggested a riding course :headbang:

Here: Get a pick of you (or someone in your clothes that is bigger then U) I DID NOT SAY THAT!!! on a bike that makers the bike look small.
Take a pic of U on a bike smaller then 600cc and make sure U look sweet on it.
Fill in the application stating that small bikes does not give U a hard on.

Im gonna have to say that you should apply anyway, like its been said if you state your case clearly and provide eviedence then you will be considered.
BUT if you are thinking "oh im gonna get a supersports, R6, ZX6r or whatever" your shit out of luck. IF and thats IF you get it you will be limited to a list of bikes supplied by the LTSA, you will be denied on any others. The list is floating round on KB.

I dont think thats necessarilly the case... but what a lot of us 'older' people see here is another young testosterone filled male with a penchant for a powerful machine and an air of invincibility.
And some of us... like me - have had the displeasure of dealing with the consequences of that on far too many occasions. Your flippant attitude about life and death is saddening. Especially as it appears you have kids of your own. I hope you never find yourself in the position of trying desperately to keep a young man alive while they lay in the middle of the road ebbing away, their entire future ripped away from them, and they from their friends and families... while their 'powerful machine' that was such a status symbol to them an hour before, lies bent and twisted 300 metres up the road.
Its not that he CAN'T do it... it is that he should bide his time - it's wise advice, from riders who are still here to give it.
Who knows - we may all be wrong and he could be a highly matured 16 yr old male who wants a bigger bike due to physical discomfort on a small bike... but his post of his description doesnt reflect that his size should be an issue... so what are we left to think...?

I got one, but i'm 193cm, 120kg, and i was 24, i explained my situation on the form and they rang me up and said to email some photos, i sent in one of me on a CBR250, and one on a SV650, which they gave me the exemption for, the thing is its ONLY for that bike, they take the numberplate and bike details and put that on your exemption letter, don't expect to get one for a 600 or 1000 sports bike or something....
Give it a go,
As far as wether or not he should get one, there are some pretty fast 250's around, wether or not hes going to wipe out is up to him, not the bike.

If you just want to go like blazers get a Kawasaki zxr250, top speed 180km/hour according to my bro,
I was in the same position as you while on by fxr. Now that I have a bigger one I'm glad that I spent the time. That small size motor meant I didn't get myself into too much trouble untill I was skilled enough to get out of it.
good luck thoug

And we all have the right of an opinion. But he asked about how to get an exemption. Not what does more experienced riders think abut a young guy on a big bike. Too often I see the "I know better" brigade trying to change the world.
Reminds me of a government in a small country I know about that decided that we could only have showers that gave us 6 liters/minute...

No rush to get an exemption, spend your time practising and then after a couple of years you can get your full and by a bigger cc bike.

Nothing posted on here is even close to being comparable with being in a nanny state... Its advice... this is a forum.
My apparent "think I know better" statement as you imply it is, is actually born from experience. Wanna swap places and see how you feel after attending a few MC crashes involving young riders. Yes some 250's can go very fast... but more cc's = more power to tame = more opportunity for control to be lost.
It would be interesting to see if your kids were in Psych's position, what your attitude towards their 'opinions' were.
Im not gonna keep on about it in this thread... its pointless and I stand by my sig.

Re Psycho and my kids. I already helped my oldest to get his exemption. And my 3 young ones ride. When the day comes that they can apply for an exemption we will do so (if you have not managed to stop that option by then...)
Hey, I would never want one of my boys to crash and end up in hospital or even worse!
But at the end it is their decision re what they do with their life. And same applies to all other young uns out there.
As much as today there is a pc attitude where we try to take away any and all dangers in a persons life (OSH, CYF, laws, etc.) there comes a time when enuf is enuf. Personally I think we have passed that a long time ago. To also find that all this has infiltrated an area of life where I have spent much of my time (biking) saddens me. Suddenly biking has become mainstream and not for the free.
It is just the way stuff goes. But does not mean I have to agree.
But hey, one day I and my likes will be dead and then life will be so much better...

Most sixteen year olds I have known (including me), I wouldn't trust with a pair of scissors, or any sharp object for that matter. At that age, the glands have direct control of the throttle hand.
However, in the interests of fairness, explain to me how you're different...?

Like damn near every thread on KB, this one has strayed way off course - the original question was 'How do I get an exemption on my learners to get a bigger bike?' To which I believe the answer is pay $18 and fill out the appropriate form.
Probably wouldn't have got so much grief if you had left out the personal details methinks.
The whole learner licence thing is flawed in NZ anyway, having a cc limit is ridiculous it should be a horsepower limit as that has much more relevance to the trouble an inexperienced rider will get himself into.
For my money something like a Suzuki LS400/650 or even an 883 Sportster would make a far better learner bike than say an RGV250 or a CBR250RR etc. Low power, low seat height, low centre of gravity, larger/more stable wheels etc.....makes sense to me.

Think about it - no matter what the PC brigade say, you can still give them the finger and do whatever the fuck you choose. If someone says "yewww carrrrnt dewww thaaaaat" you can still laugh and them and wheelie off.
It's like abusive people on KB - its their angry twisted life, not mine.

i kinda just want a bike that can cruise at 100 no probs cause i wana do some road trips and stuff.
not sayin i cant do a road trip on my bike but its starts screamin at those speeds lol
i have had alot of close encounters on my scooter anyway.
mostly due to me bein a typical male teenager where its full tilt and brakes are only there as extra wieght.
been there done that. id rather not get hurt and not have to pay a massive repair bill on the bike
and they are drum brakes. still tryin to figure that one out. they are a bit spongy so mayb just grease the ( not sure if this is the right word) but the axle of where the lever is.

So you are not riding the SR250? I did a road trip on a SR older than I was around 4 years ago. Went up from Wellington all around northland for just over a week, and then back home again. Best time I have ever had on a motorbike!!!
Even with it fully laden I had no problems with getting up to and over 100km/h, and through the nice sweeping roads in northland I was more than a match for those on higher cc bikes.

there seems to be nothing wrong with it no rattles or any thing abnormal.
what could be slowing it down?
its only done 30830kms and im pretty sure it wouldnt be going so well if it had been round the clock.
its got a small crack on the inside of the exhaust which gives it a whistle could that be having an effect?
