View Full Version : Gin and tonic: the gentleman's drink
jrandom
18th October 2008, 14:34
Sitting here of a sunny Saturday afternoon, sipping my beverage of choice, it strikes me that I almost never find professional bar staff, and certainly never private individuals, who know how to assemble it properly.
So, for posterity, I shall record the relevant information here. Take heed, y'all.
The Gin
Bombay Sapphire. There are other brands of 'gin', to be sure, but they all taste like something a Coronation Street actor pissed against a fence at 3am. Just get the Bombay and be done with it.
The Ice
Yes, you need ice. Gin, unlike peasant drinks such as vodka, does not live in the freezer. Bombay's delicate herbacious flavour cannot survive being reduced to ten below zero - a brief splash over ice cubes is appropriate, superconductor-level refrigeration is not.
The Tonic
If any brand other than Schweppes offers palatable tonic water, I have yet to hear of it. Production of a pussified version of the drink which originated in heathen climes as a means of protecting civilised folk against the ravages of malaria should indeed be entrusted only to the licencing of that bastion of Western civilisation, the Coca-Cola Company.
I, for one, welcome our new quinine-infused corporate overlords.
The Process
G&Ts are best served in tumblers, fatter than the tapering-down ones you normally find in bars. In fact, if you can find tumblers which taper toward the top, all the better.
Fill the glass one-third of the way up with ice cubes.
Cover those ice cubes with Bombay Sapphire, and then pour in a touch more.
You should now be looking at a glass which is about 45% full.
G&Ts are not rum and colas; a G&T is a strong drink, and the purpose of the gin is to soften and change the flavour of the tonic water, and vice versa. A 50-50 mix is not unheard of, although I aim for about 40% gin to 60% tonic.
Fill the glass to the brim with your tonic water, and consume immediately.
Citrus twists
Lemons and limes are for squeezing over salads, not adulterating perfectly good gin with. Leave the fruit in the fruit-bowl, and your taste buds will thank you for not overcomplicating matters.
Food matches
What the fuck you on about, motherfucker? G&Ts don't go with food.
A G&T is the perfect apéritif, stimulating the appetite, cleansing the palate with its astringency, and loosening restraint with its hefty ethanol payload.
Get those G&Ts down your guests' throats before more substantial nourishment is even hinted at, and any social occasion will be a measurably greater success.
And, why, yes... I do believe I will have another one now.

The only problem with Bombay is you (well, I.. used to) only feel it after about 3/4 of a bottle... then it comes on fast *oh fuck, i'm horribly horribly drunk, and annoying*. Might be different now i'm on the wagon.

A 40:60 ratio of Rum:Coke is about what I use. Well for the first one, after that I dispense with the pretence of being civilised and don't bother with the coke (unless it is not for me).

My old (as in farts dust, old) uncle makes his own, and sells it to the old ducks at his local bowling club for cash, or wrinkly favours. (dirty ol bastard, I'm so proud of him).
Oh yeah, his GP reckons the gin has kept him alive the last dozen years. Has a couple with his breakfast. He also rates Bombay as a good drop, but swears his brew beats it. (I'm not a great fan of it, Gin is a hairdressers drink).

If you want to be a gin conassuer a bar is not the place to do it. Bartenders have to much other shit to bother about than whether your glass has exactly 5 and a half ice cubes in it before putting in the gin.
I can do a G&T in 15 seconds and its amazing.....if you want perfection a bar is not the place.

Which is pretty much how most clear alcamahols are made. Unless some other olde fashioned method of manufacture is specified in detail on the label it's been delivered down a 4" pipeline and had artificial flavours added to suit.

Bombay Sapphire is the Glenfiddich, or Toyota Camry of gins. Better than many but more a useful starting point and basis of comparison for one's journey of discovery.
Plymouth Gin and Mr De Kuyper's fine beverage ply the palate altogether differently to the stuff in the Blue Bottle. Then there are the delights of the Whitley Neil London Dry Gin, Fresh off the boat from a trip to the USA, with a modest night on the tiles of San Francisco, one discovered a gin made by a local distillery, with a singularly uninspiring name like Distillery 209, if my memory serves me well. The gin was marvellous, and the bar tender did indeed know how to assemble a damned fine G&T. The T being Schweppes, of course.

Oh, this is bollocks.
I have a mate who travels to Aussie *lots* for work. We get him to pick up gin on the way back in then use it to make G&T's every day for the next couple of weeks until he has to go again. Suits us all very well.
But the question of brand came up - to Sapphire or no, as it were. We got all scientific: lined up half a dozen different brands of different prices, made identical G&T's with them, double blind tested them, had people mark them, the full monty. Want to know the result? The ones with more alcohol in tasted more of alcohol. And that is *it*. This Bombay Sapphire thing is bullshit and we now pick up the cheapest 45% we can lay our hands on.
I challenge you, Mr Random, to do this halfway scientifically and come up with any other result.
In the meanwhile the correct way to make a G&T is as follows:
Glass. Wide tumbler. Two ice cubes (we have big ice cubes). A fresh slice of lemon - pick your lemons well since this does make a difference (mandarins can be used too for a completely different drink that is not G&T). Pour one shot of gin *over* the lemon. If there is a little dog end of lemon you can squeeze some of the juice in but not too much - G&T with too much lemon in tastes like lemon juice. Add tonic. If it's been sitting in the fridge too long and isn't fizzy anymore, bin it and open another bottle. Drink, and make another - this is the most important step.

there is only one decent gin Gordons. Nothing else comes close.
Gordons is made...."from local neutral spirit and other imported ingredients"......ie it is made from whey alcohol and has imported botanicals soaked in it to give it gin flavour.
Bombay Sapphire is produced in a 'Carterhead" still. Here ya go.....
"The creation of Bombay Sapphire is truly unique. There are only a few Carterhead stills remaining in the world today and three are exclusive to Bombay Sapphire. Unlike many other gins, which boil their botanicals directly in the spirit to achieve their taste, the 10 botanicals in Bombay Sapphire are held separate from the spirit in a perforated copper basket. The Carterhead stills remove any last impurities in the spirit vapour before it passes up through the basket and in a process known as vapour infusion it is delicately infused with the aromatic flavours of the botanicals. The result is the complex and refined taste which gives Bombay Sapphire its extraordinary mixability."
So there you have it. I'd go with Bombay myself.....

Fuckin waaaaa Gin and tonic the drink of gentleman faggots. Ah now that I've got that off me Chest I am enjoying a nice CC and Coke over ice.
:shit: If you are a Rum drinker I go for appletons and coke,
For fucks sake!
What is worngA with you people! :Pokey:
ANYTHING and coke is like buying a Desmosedicci and putting diesel in the tank!
Actually , it's more like putting 50% industrial waste in the tank.
Putting ANYTHING with Appleton's is SACRILEGE!!!!!...akin to mixing dry ginger with Springbank........:argh:
Amen, Brudda! Word! And all that!:Punk:
Gin and tonics are for pussies - drink Dutch gin neat (actually, Geneva gin - the Dutch adulterate it by putting a spoonful of sugar in it).
But I'd rather drink Belgian beer, or any decent red wine. I like white wine, but my crappy arthritic joints don't, nor do they like whisky any more, especially the peatier ones. But (however), bourbon seems fine. Shame it's inferior... :(
I dunno... to each his/her own, and all that. But I can't help cringing when people mix anything with coke. Noobs'n'peasants...

So you're telling me that a gin that has only been produced by it's distillers since 1987 us superior to a gin that has been produced for two hundred years. Give me a Gordon's........'Yea right.'
But no matter what gin ya like it is a gentlemans tipple.

Actually not quite what I was trying to say Skyrider - original Gordons is as good as ever it was. But what I get to sell here is NZ made and is indeed made as I said above. The exact wording is as follows:
"Bottled in New Zealand under licence using local neutral spirit and other ingredients imported from Great Britain for Diageo Australia Ltd....."
To me, it is like saying that locally 'brewed under licence' Stella or Heineken is the same as the original. It is not the same, it is different. It may well use the original recipe but local conditions do make a difference....same with the gin. The whole process of production is different so the end result is not identical. We have lots of products here that are sold under original labels that are not original product.......I once greatly upset a rep who told me "our heineken is the best heineken in the world!!" Apart from the fact that it either IS or IS NOT heineken and therefore should not vary, I told him I thought it was a JABAB...."What does that mean? he asked..."Just Another Bloody Auckland Beer"........he never came back again for some reason...and he had our Monteiths stand removed a couple of weeks later as well.....!!
When all is said and done however, I sell more Gordons than any other brand of gin, so maybe you have a point!

I like Bombay Sapphire, but I like mine with the rim of the glass dipped in lime juice.
However when you're pissed it's so much easier to keep it simple than demanding that the spirit you're about to further drown yourself in is of a particular brand etc, so all I really have to say is, "JD's and gingerale" is pretty easy to slur at anytime.

The Gin
Bombay Sapphire. There are other brands of 'gin', to be sure, but they all taste like something a Coronation Street actor pissed against a fence at 3am. Just get the Bombay and be done with it.
Okay, I'm probably totally out of whack with the current topic of conversation on this thread but (seeing as Gin is my spirit of choice) I have to disagree with ya Dan that Bombay is "the best" Gin. I find Plymouth is my Gin of choice, as little drier than Bombay. Bombay would be my 2nd choice though.
Carry on.
p.s I do like a bit of lemon in mine. I definitely use Schweppes Indian Tonic Water.

The "local" Heinekin, Stella, Tuborg, etc etc. are just NOT the same as the real brews. They can't be! There are too many subtle differences in ingredients and manufacturing.
I think it (and the taking over of popular boutique breweries) is a cunning plan by the two big brewing companies here to just market Steinlager in hundreds of different-looking bottles with the same contents. Charge a premium for a fancy label on a mass-produced swill.

Oh so some rum, a deck chair, some rain and a slippery step is all you need to fuck your shoulder. I'd like to see that. When's your next party? You two must be due for one soon.
He went missing mate  He was downstairs clearing up and it had all gone quiet, I went down to see if he was ok and the garage door was open no sign of him. The gate to the back yard was open so I figured he was up there. I came back upstairs and went out the back to look, no sign of him there either  So back down stairs I go to find him standing there, soaking wet, holding his shoulder, looking very sorry for himself. Poor bugger, no one saw it, and there was no one to laugh at him either
And, indeed it is high time and long overdue that we had a gathering at ours, best we get a planning :niceone:
Gin and tonic is for middle class bankers.
The only drink for a gentleman is port or claret (depending on your politics) . Single malt whisky is acceptable for medicinal purposes. Whisky. And whisky. Nothing else. Rum may be subsitutued for Naval types.
Port? Did you mention Port? Now see that is also a drink for the ladies  Has a very um... interesting side effect on us DAMHIK
I definitely use Schweppes Indian Tonic Water.
G&T is my summer camping drink of choice. One year I was amazed my son kept leaping up to pour me drink after drink?? Very strange behaviour indeed. I had been to the local shop to buy the tonic and all they had was PAMS or some such disgusting excuse for tonic. Being an apprentice pisshead I knew I could never drink my Gin straight so settled for it
The drinks my son was making tasted disgusting to say the least, but not being a complainer I drank them. This went on for a couple of days until we could get to the liquor supply shop. I buy the replacement bottle of Gin and several Schweppes tonics for good measure. Get back to camp in time for happy hour and pour myself this lovely G&T!
It was bliss...
Then I saw my son laughing...
When I asked what was so funny we said I WAS!
Apparently he had watered my Gin down a few days before hand, the Pams shit tonic disguised the taste of no Gin, I had been sober for days!!!!
Little shits my kids

Nice description of how to make a GnT, you must be goin to westy bars to get your drinks though, all they drink out there is bourbon and coke, they like the taste of sugar I think (instead of alcohol). I worked in bars in CBD for a couple of years and you gotta be a dip shit to fuck up a GnT, only addition I'd make would be to rim the glass with lime.

I don't, as a rule, go to bars. Certainly not the horrible noisy sorts full of lawyers and marketing consultants.
The only two drinking establishments in Auckland that I patronise on a regular basis are the Crow Bar, where I order whatever the guys there feel like making me at the time (they know way more about the art of drinking than I do) and Galbraiths, for porter and Laphroaig-by-the-glass.

This is a bit off topic but I was watching some History Channel and there was this programme on living like they do in the dim dark ages like growing their own corn grinding it in a working mill, baking etc. Hell they even had pigs so that they could root up the ground to make easier to plough so it was primitive stuff. Anyway they were making beer etc and this woman making the beer was giving a speil how beer and ale are different. Beer has hops and it's the hops that act as a presevitive and allow the beer to 'keep' longer. Ale on the other hand has no hops and will not keep as long. This is all news to me as I thought ale and beer were no different.
Anyone got the 'real' oil on this?
