View Full Version : My Buell the lemon!

Well Ladies..chivalry is not dead:shit:
Today I went on Garry's `economy run'..and my 2008 Buell with less than 2000ks on the clock did 0.2km/tank of gas:mellow:
After filling up and heading out of Ashhurst petrol station it decided to stop...I mean it just didn't want to go anymore. When the key was turned off, the instrument panel lit up, when the key was turned on, the high beam light came on:shifty::no: Oh dear...I have definately bought a `lemon`. It had apparent `starting`problems in the shop which was supposedly fixed but a full loom replacement...then the speedo started to die, then came right, and today the whole thing died:confused:
Thanks to Garry, who pushed me to Mr and Mrs Cowboyz then gave me a lift to a local Motorbike shop:niceone:. Thanks to the young chappy who came out and took it back to the shop...and a big `NO THANKS' to the local Motorbike shop who then said they can't let me have a bike to ride meanwhile because I didn't buy my bike from them:2guns: I pointed out that I did buy my last new bike and 90% of my gear from them though....:argue:
I am absolutely gutted. Actually more like really really pissed off. I bought a new bike so that I would'nt have any troubles-being on my own I don't have a Mr Fix it to do those `bits n pieces`(don't particularly want one either:laugh:) so needed something reliable. Tui add!!
Now...I have a wee debt to collect. One lovely man from a Wellington bike shop who sold me said Buell offered his left testicle over this bike (he doesn't know me very well-foolish man)...Pete..I'm coming to get it:devil2:!!
Sorry for ruining your day Garry....

Sorry to hear of your woes. I thought Buell had sorted their early issues. I'd NEVER buy a first year new Buell - it appears to take a year or two to sort them out.

Now thats a bit mean - I understand being pissed, but I think its pretty steep expecting to get a loaner from a shop you did not purchase the bike from.
Hopefully it will all be sorted very quickly.

bugga. lets hope its sorted soon.
as Allanb said, it would be a big ask to get another bike to ride while yours is getting fixed but would be bloody good tho.
i'll have to have amnesia about this (hopefully) minor glitch, gotta get me a uly one day.
if ya really want one of those lefties i'd swap mine for a Uly:laugh:

I was going to wait for the 2009's but got impatient:girlfight: ..still love them though..great bike to ride.

But i did by my last one new off them (only a year ago too) and my gear-if they could have been more helpful initially over the Uly I would have bought from them. They loan bikes if you get a service done..I have always arranged my own transport for these and never asked...guess it was a bit steep.
Hopefully it will all be sorted very quickly.
Yea I know it isn't a big problem..just one of those tricky ones:crazy:. And the Welly crew are usually tops:2thumbsup

The XB series must be 7 years old now (I'll check that) - they are all basically the same bike with different components.

Yes you are right of course...why should they...its not like my custom is important to them-I am just a small fish.
I guess they will get no money for fixing it either? I don't know how warranty's work when you have to use a Buell Service Tech to get it fixed. I presume they must get re-embursed somehow though.
Maybe I should have paid $2k more and got it from them...we live and learn huh.

After Big Dave's glowing reports, I contemplated a Ulysses, then a friend of mine in Mrka (who works for Harley) bought one so I watched and waited and listened for his feedback. He loved it! Had some minor niggles, but thought it was a great bike.
Until a couple of months ago.
He took it on a 4-day vacation, and it crapped out, miles from home. He had to hire a truck and tow it all the way home again. He was REALLY pissed off. Lost him three days of leave, and cost him for the truck rental. Of course, it was still under warranty, so Buell fixed it all up good as new for him.
He traded it in on a Yamaha 1300 and a couple of weeks ago had another attempt at his m/cycle vacation. :niceone:
This time, he had absolutely no problems.

AA plus for $100 or so and useable for any vehicle you are on/in,gets you home free or accomodation whilst it is repaired if 100km away from home.
As for the bike shop,if they knew you they should have given a loaner, especially as you bought from them previous, obviously they are annoyed they lost a sale, but whose fault is that, and rubbing salt in is you bought gear from them as well.
Sounds like me,bought over $700 worth of gear from the same shop(I suspect),been back a few times in the car, looking at bikes and gear, first time in 5 visits was I asked if I needed help was this weekend.I said nope but my wife wants to buy shortleg pants,he said where is she,my reply she must have got pissed waiting for service,I then said bit of a shame as she has a say in the next bike we get(well not to big a say),went into another 3 dealers today and we recieved great service from the local Suzuki,Kawaski and Honda parts guys,no wonder people buy Japan bikes.
What is it with bike shops and women,at least car yards have realised women are the key to selling to.

Krayy is pretty damn happy with the XB12STT he got from the same place, we did the RRRS course yesterday & it was very impressive. All makes of bike can have dramas, (My Beemer had major ones). It's un-nerving to have problems, I now have trust issues, so have also taken out AA Plus, which will work for both the car & bike.
I'm sure you'll have things sorted tout suite & be back in the saddle soon. :scooter:

think the Uly has been around a few years now and should have no probs at all.

this is the first time i have heard of problems with any xb from new.....????

Ah a nerve.
Buells are very well documented as having lots of early teething problems. One of the things Harley did when taking them over was to improve these issues and improve warranty claims. Again well documented in the press and on the net. Not to mention a bloody good idea.
All types of bikes have issues, I recall Suzuki selling early 1200 Bandits with oil holes in the pistons that were too large - thus burning a lot of oil. Apparently they have never admitted this was a 'problem' and stated that oil use of up to 1litre per 1600 kms was acceptable ...... yeah right in the 50's!!!
I'd have no problem purchasing a new HD Sportster based Buell, in fact I secretly like them. Its a surprise you appear to have a faulty loom. Shit does happen I guess :shit:
My comment was I'd (me - do what you like) not purchase a NEW release Buell in its first year ie I'd ignore the new Rotax one for a year or so. It was released with poor fuelling that has been fixed now with a upgrade.
Besides it looks like an insect.......
Hondas of course are friggen perfect and have never had a issue in all their years of production ..... :innocent:
Here's a question - how come HD can release a BRAND new Rotax engined Buell for $18k (I think) that is effectively a low volume model for Harley. Then offer a FXSRthingy cosmetic rehash of their big twin for farken thousands more.

As far as early teething problems go...most of those were in relation to the early tuber range ie: engine mounts and exhaust brackets breaking being the most common along with the ol' white power shock shitting itself. Those issues were the fault of Buell in more than just the obvious way...the tubers were marketed as Hoons bikes and so people totally thrashed them...er oops!
I own a tuber. I bought it with only 4000kms on the clock, practically new. It did over a 100,000kms before one of the exhaust brackets finally parted company. Probably an all-time record for a rattly old tuber!
And yes I have had my shock rebuilt but other than that it has been a primo bike with no issues apart from the usual wear and tear.
The XB range has had a few warranty recalls but on the whole they are bloody reliable bikes.
Shit happens...

Hondas of course are friggen perfect and have never had a issue in all their years of production ..
That's not true.
But you knew that.
Since 400BC (or whenever Soichiro invented his first two-wheeled contrivance), Hondas have had shit camchain systems.
And the earlier V4s had cam oiling problems.
And until 2001, many Hondas had crappy R/Rs, despite their supplier (Shindengen) having better ones available.
Their gearboxes are less stallar than they could be. SImply copying (or manufacturing under license) Mr factory Pro's excellent Evo Star shifters would fix that.
And now - having got the VFR sorted out - they removed tried'n'true hardware (gear-driven cams) and reintroduced old problems (camchain tensioners) and some new ones (faulty brake proportioning valves, faulty wiring looms, faulty stators).
I think all this had to do not so much with not having the means to make a perfectly reliable bike, but more to do with saving face (don't acknowledge a problem, unless there are lawsuits in Mrka), and with not giving a crap (if it doesn't fail in the first three years of the bike's life, who cares?).
WHat's worse than all that, is Honda has shown that by and large they don't have their finger on the pulse of what their customers and potential customers want. Apart from keeping up with the Joneses (Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha)with respect to the race-replica market, because that's where some of the big sales are, Honda just makes bikes seemingly without much market research being done.

Like what?
The DN-01?
The 20xx (12? 15? 30?) VFRxxx, with auto transmission, the new version of combined power braking + ABS, airbags, and a V4 that disconnects two cylinders (a la Honda Accord V6) when cruising?
And that weighs more than the current model VFR, takes three times as long to service (and costs four times as much), and has less power than the current one?
Fuck that. <_<
As for "even the mighty Honda" having issues, here's summat I found out when looking for a new camera and phone. Pick just about any model (of virtually any of today's consumer items), and type into Gooooogle summat like "BrandName ModelNumber problems", and see what turns up.
The trouble is we live in ConsumptionWorld, where nothing's really made to last more'n a couple of years, If it breaks, throw it away and buy another one.

I think Honda does excellent R&D.
You have to divorce sports/recreational motorcycling from personal transport.
The DN-01 is actually a milestone machine. Might not sell and it might take a while - and the longevity of the hydraulic transmission is to be proved, but if it all stands up, a lot of two-wheelers will be this way in the future.
You can rail against its un-motorcycleness, but for getting someone who isn't a rider onboard it's cheeenius.
They have traditional and 'incremental' model and it's not all about 'motorcyclists'.

New for NZ in 09
CB1000R - fun bikes
Hornet 600 - fun bikes
DN thingy (agree with Big Dave here - there will be more)
Whats any of the big makers got???? nothing really new. Suzukis are all rehashes ditto Yahama (cool new crank on the R1), Kawasaki......., Harley (Sport Sportster).
V4 fans - man they have hang-ups :devil2: there is always a VMax.
Actually I am surprised the V4 has not made a big comeback - probably production costs compared to the inline that kill it.
Other than a few very low volume makers that are hellishly expensive Buell is one of the few prepared to experiment from the norm.
Then there is Triumph of course - some innovation and difference there.
Just about everything is that good now that there is little point in brand loyality - buy what you like and what gives you the most FUN.

A very good choice for you and your wife:Punk:...but Pete has just given me the SS lightning to use while my Uly is being repaired (Thanks Pete...you can keep your bits' n' pieces now:lol:), and it has made me realise how much the Uly is exactly what I want/like in a bike. (though the SS has the most amazingly comfy seat  and sounds soooo cool ;) ).
I love the Uly and wouldn't ever swap it for another bike.... You may find your wife will end up pinching your Uly:gob:
Thanks Welly MC...
Thanks for letting me keep my nads! The XB12ss was a secret ploy to sell you an acc muffler!
We'll have your Uly back to you as soon as we sort it...thanks for your patience.

V4 fans - man they have hang-ups :devil2: there is always a VMax.
Actually I am surprised the V4 has not made a big comeback - probably production costs compared to the inline that kill it.
I like V4s because I don't like the buzziness of the IL4s, and the V4 has some of the character of a V-twin, but is smoother. (I do miss the v-twin though, and may end up replacing the VFR with another one, or maybe a triple).
It's a bummer that the Honda V4s used to be the sportiest of the Hondas, during the 80s, and somehow morphed into a sport-tourer. I think if the RC45 hadn't been nobbled in WSB by the rules being bent to favour Ducati, things might've been different. But, as you say, a V4's probably dearer to produce, and it certainly can be more expensive to service.
It's also a bummer that there's been no trickle-down effect from MotoGP, but I guess that's to be expected, given the bikes have to be entirely non-production based.

I'd have to say I agree 100%
Even Guzzi could run a sweet inline V4

Thats really good to hear. You'll have to organise a group ride to collect your bike when its ready. I wouldn't mind a trip to Wellington in the near future.

Go for it...you won't regret it. I think you will find if you are going to do some travelling that the Uly will suit you both...one each:clap:.
I find my bike less tiring than the SS, I have to hold on tighter in the PN winds :Oi: I personally think my bike is much better to `handle'...corner etc....though it is nice being able to reach the ground:niceone:

wife and i are looking at getting a buell each, probs 2009 XB12s for me and a XB9sx for her although she tried the red XB12s they have in welly motorcycles shop and she can touch the ground a lot better... the seat looks way lower than the rest of them... hope we can get a seat like that one when we get our bikes...
My wife has a 2004 XB12S which she bought 2 1/2 years ago with 7000km and it's now done 17,000km. Never missed a beat, runs like a champ. The only "issue" we've had happened a few years ago when it picked up a stone that partially tore the drivebelt, but it was straightforward to replace (and it didn't actually snap).
My wife was a little concerned about the seat height when she got the bike too (she suffers from duck's disease), so we got a factory accessory low seat for it. It was cheap (at least i thought so!) at about $220 from memory. She doesn't use it any more, because the standard seat has more padding and is more comfortable for the distances we often cover. She's gotten used to the extra height now, and it isn't an issue any more.

Huh.
Must be a good clutch then. Many hydraulic clutches (like the VFR, and especially some Ducatis) have very heavy hydraulic clutches. If you rode my bike, you'd soon have a very strong left hand. Dunno 'bout the homosexual wrist though

AJ's aint bad, but funnily enough it's only slightly lighter than my original cable version.
You should feel the hydraulic clutch on the neighbour's Beta, ridiculously light.

talked to sales guy at Welly motorcycles and he said that there will not be any 2009 XB_s, XB_sx, XB_scg model coming in to New Zealand.
welly motorcycle boss imported them especialy from Japan but now costs too much to continue doing so...
that sux for me cause i wont be able to afford one till next year and most of the current ones in NZ will be super old with heaps of km's...
i love the Blue XB9sx on trademe but its a 2005 and theres an orange XB12scg in Nelson that a 2007 but way out of my price range...
i hope some one has lots of money and imports a bunch of 2009's & 2008's next year... they are a super sexy bike and will sell like hot cakes or should i say meat pies...

Yeah - HD-A have rationalised the range. A decision made in light of the cost of inventory against projected sales.
No more XB12X either. Only the shorties version. Gutted.

Engineer. Good design = good looks. Literally. Like I can't be trusted to buy my own clothes.
So answer me this: If a very average rider can set a bike up for a corner roughly right, tip it in and get on the gas at the appointed time, and have the power delivered just naturally match the available traction to near perfection then why would I want to change it?
More power? Not if it means less control in getting it down, in fact I can't think of any use for more even if the delivery is as good. But I'm keen to see what the difference actually feels like.
They are fucking ugly, but I think so because I'm not sure the new design elements are as elegantly solved as the original. I may, however step off an 1125 thinking they're the most beutiful bit of kit around...

Harley Motor...??? did you look it up before you made that assumption...?
The 1125R has a Helicon engine produced & manufactured by BRP-Rotax in Austria.
So no they don't have Harley motors...

Another notable is the XB series engines only share a handful of components with a sportster engine. It's like half a dozen only.
A sportie runs 60 horsepower and a Buell 100.
