What is the New Zealand Motorcycle Atlas like? Worth buying for $30?

Not seen or read it myself (been looking for it, but haven't found it yet), but have heard from more than 1 source that it's apparently well worth the read ...

Well worth it IMHO, mine is now dog eared, water damaged, battered and well thumbed through! Taken me on plenty rides and looking for the yellow squiggly lines for biking country is addictive!
Has bags of info. about sights, sounds and stops for the intrepid traveller and travel tips also. I've done just about all the NI routes ... just got the SI to do next.
For the $30 or so squids, its all gravy baby!

Its worth a read. The book is one of the main reason that got me touring.

Hi Slo
If you like I can pop in and see you and show you the atlas. Good excuse to get a coffee at jacks and check out your whisky!

As an alternative I can recommend 'Great Escapes', a guide to motorcycle touring in NZ compiled by Peter Mitchell.

Isn't that the same author? What's the difference between the two books?

Have to say I love my NZ Motorcycle Atlas, good information about the routes, petrol stops etc, and is a good size for the tank bag.
I might have to call in at a book shop and have a nosey at the Great Escapes book.

I really like my Motorcycle Atlas and have used it quite a bit when deciding on roads to ride. It is also fun to look at when you just feel like thinking/reading about places to ride. Good maps, good motorcycle focus.

I love it! Over time I have accumulated three copies. A much battered, previously drowned copy accompanies me on trips. Numerous such trips have been planned using the Atlas.
The copy I payed for cost $35 so $30 sounds fine to me.

Well just to go against the flow ... a little. I have given up the motorcycle atlas because the Kiwimaps North Island book is waaaay better. It has a greater scale and more detail of minor roads. It's much easier to read and has lots of additional features.
With the motorcycle atlas, I found that we already knew about the "featured" roads and the smaller scale and detail made it muuch harder to find your way through some of the more remote and interesting routes. For example, I got lost in a forest and came across "No.2 Rd". It's not in the Motorcycling Atlas but it was in the Kiwimaps book - lifesaver

Well, not a bad decision but I think what happens is that you'll grow out of it. Whe I first got it, I thought it was great but then found prtty soon that i''d ridden all of the roads they recommend and so went back to the miore detailed book.
So, yep its a really good book to start with and then when you want more out of the way experiences, you'll upgrade.

Have to agree. I think in a year or two I will be on to a more detailed atlas. But this is a great place to start.

Still a good book. I will pop in and see you after work tonight. Should be just a shade after 5ish. I will be the guy in motorcycle gear :niceone:

I have heard the Kiwimap book is really good but already got the Atlas and even after years of touring (using detailed AA maps) I still find it great for suggesting roads I would otherwise not known about.
I give it a thumbs-up!

It's true that the scale can be a bit small. I already knew my local featured roads but I don't know the "featured" roads all over the whole country. Since I obtained the book I have now travelled quite a few roads including both coasts of both Islands that came to note because of the "Atlas". And there are more roads to come... (God willing :-)
At various times I may use other maps in different scales but I still think the Atlas is a motorcyclist's essential once you venture away from your home patch. I also have the other book by the same author but it in no way fills the same function as the Atlas.
