View Full Version : Riff Raff Alert - beware bike shops

Riff Raff
1st February 2005, 14:21
Well today I did a ride with a difference. I rode out to Pukekohe and visited, of all places, a camera shop. I then proceeded to ride around the streets of Pukekohe and never once exceeded the speed limit, indicated for every turn, turned my indicator off after said turn, didn't overtake anyone, and was generally a very well behaved biker. I then returned to the camera shop and left clutching in my hot little hands a piece of paper that tells the world that no longer am I condemned to ride a 250cc motorbike!!
So this is just a friendly warning to all bike shops that I may be popping in tomorrow or the next day, and I'll probably want to take some bikes out for a ride.
Does anyone want to buy Bella?

Yes I was a bit surprised at having to do that but he said it was to gauge whether I was capable of getting my knee down, since it is impossible to do on my current bike! It was really great the way he marched up to the child who was playing on it and flashed his LTSA badge then demanded he get off the thing. There's actually a sign in the park that says all children have to surrender playground equipment if LTSA staff demand it. Wonder how I can get one of those badges? It would be great to get the little bastards off the swings so I can have a play!!

Out in the open they don't have quite the same distribution factor and pungency to elicit a mass exodus of children. Most of the little bastards can do worse ones than me!

Don't go fast! And make sure you check your mirrors regularly for instructions on whether to turn or to pull over and stop.

I was lucky, I had a really nice testing officer. He's looking at getting back into motorbikes at the mo after a break of 10 years, so we had a really good natter. So anyone in Auckland about to do your test - think about going to Pukekohe!

Cracks me up that a dude who hasn't ridden a bike in ten years is an authority on who's safe to do so.

A study in the UK about 8 years ago (some pom will correct me) showed that the sudden increase in biker fatalities was not the 25 year old nutters on Blades and R1s. It was mid to late 40 year olds, getting back into biking after a layoff and thing, "I used to ride a GS thou', better get meself a litre bike."

I'm gonna get flamed and burn in inter-geek hell for this but, old brains with little practice have not a hope in hell of dealing with 140hp, 170kg sports machines. Simple as that.

Test riding is ofcourse a good idea, but if you see something you like, and they don't have any demo's, or can't/won't let you test it, it doesn't mean you can't buy it.

Yet in saying GSXR, it can take quite a GSXR to find just the right GSXR for the prospective GSXR purchaser. Of course, once the GSXR is decided, there will be no GSXR reason to consider any other GSXR.

Then go down the line and check them out in Hamilton....
Test ride every bike that you possibly can...

The bike that you will end up buying, will sing out your name... and only YOU will know which bike that will be... and then you wil be very happy with her... and ride her all over the place.... just keep TS off her for the first 6 months or so......lol.

But at least in the meantime you do still have Bella to ride.... :spudbooge

AMPS might do a deal on that demo Voxan CR. You don't know until you ask. They've no expensive fibre, just plain honest power, and the tweak of the baffles brings on a Duc-like quack. The rollin froggies sure do get hot on a dawdle though, I'm gonna put some more heat shields on my header pipes and maybe fit an oil cooler (oil temp light came on today and the sun wasn't even shining through the clouds, damn hot though).

It's okay Riff Raff, I'm here now!!

Congratulations on the licence - well done!

Don't listen to any of the others - Ducatis are wonderful bikes.

I am fully qualified in Ducatista.

I have Her_B4 already trying out Oakley Ducati-lens-laser-etched sunnies. She has already started working her way through the Ducati Accessory Catalogue (okay, so it's only a t-shirt, pen, and keyring so far, but it's a start!) And Flame has bought herself a second Ducati. I'm sure that either of them would vouch for my worthiness at helping you part with your hard earned cash on Ducati stuff.

Keep me posted! (We'll be at Paeroa on the 20th Feb, then at Pukekohe at the beginning of March for the racing so could meet up with you if you're there to hear about your progress in person!)

I understand that Motomart are shortly getting in a blue/white S4R - I saw Stu's one (he lives in Chch) at the Tokaanu Ducati rally - boy does it look stunning in dark blue with white wheels!

awesome effort K14 - i reckon sitting it in the rain is the way to go - it makes you that little bit more careful, the examiner *should* take into account the conditions, and if you're keen enough to do it in the rain, then you're obviusly keen enough....

So now its time to decide on the S or the nekkid version.... and what exhaust pipe to fit (the one she rode had a Scorpian and sounded quite nice)

THATS NOT FAIR!!!
You cant compare an SV650 to a M400!!!
They are no where near each other in terms of performance!!
MATE!...
You just wait till i wheelie past you on MY DUCATI in F3!!!! You wont know what hit ya!! :devil2:

Ok people, first up, there were no Monster 620 or 800s for me to try at Haldanes so I thought I'd have a play on the 400 for a laugh. It was a bit of fun - but I had four cages try to take me out while riding it! :shit: The salesman at Haldanes told me I was welcome to take any bike in the shop for a test ride, so I thought tomorrow I would have a go on an MV1000 Tamburini!!!!! :shifty:
I tried the naked SV650 and that was a lot of fun - the only problem I had was the wind buffeting at speeds a little ish (ahem  ) over 100kph. So I need to try an SV650S.

But the M620 is no where near either... it is down 3 hp and shitloads of torque compared to the SV650. AND the SV650 is shit loads cheaper....

I rather fancy a Ducati T-shirt. What do they cost? Who do I order them from?

Is that the colour scheme with the white go-fast stripe down the middle, Thruxton 900 style?

It's gorgeous.
.
.
(and also to Sniper CBR)
Haldanes will sell Ducati caps and t-shirts. The T-shirts are around $90 upwards...they are very good quality. Caps around $40.

Yes, the colour scheme is a bit like the Thruxton - it is absolutely stunning.

Hamish has put a white go-fast stripe on my front guard and screen (too hard to put one on the tank cos of the shape) on the M1000 (to make it easier for me to tell them apart) (just kidding, of course I can tell them apart - I'm their mother).

Nothing will have the razor sharp handling of a GSX-R, or the immense power of a GSX-R, or the wicked induction noise of a GSX-R, or the amazing braking power of the GSX-R.... Do i have to carry on??? I can.... possibly even write a book about it...

YAAAAwWWWnnn....

But not everybody wants a repli-racer.
Some of us want something with a bit of style, and/or class, and/or character.
And we're not all wannabe racers that bleat on about how slow we are. :Pokey:

Go on - write your book. I'm sure it will sell in its...... ummm.... well, I'm sure there must be some racer boys who can read.....

OK - put plenty of pix in it of wheelies, stoppies, gruesome crashes, and GSXR porn, and your wannabe racers will be sure to buy a few copies.:thud:

Don't go fast! And make sure you check your mirrors regularly for instructions on whether to turn or to pull over and stop.

I was lucky, I had a really nice testing officer. He's looking at getting back into motorbikes at the mo after a break of 10 years, so we had a really good natter. So anyone in Auckland about to do your test - think about going to Pukekohe!

Great news RR and glad to hear your test went well. Those roundabouts in Puke can be a dodgem course sometimes! I sat my full a few months ago at the same place and with the same officer ( I think). Made a nice comparison to the absolute plonker that took me for my restricted at VTNZ Pukekohe.

Good luck in finding your next beastie and have fun with all those test rides. I went the opposite and didn't even test ride my VFR400. I bought it on a whim while I still had my restricted but I just knew it was the bike for me. By the way, I've only heard great things about the SV650 but I reckon like you said, the faired version is the way to go. (sorry Duc lovers  )

Hmm... decided to check out the bike shops in Hamilton today. Now yesterday I had fantastic service from the shops I went into in Auckland - :2thumbsup for Haldanes and Holeshot who let me test ride bikes.
So anyway went to Hamilton today - first shop I went into had a bike I was interested in and would have liked to have test ridden, but unfortunately the salesman just wouldn't take the hint, and then halfway through our conversation we were interrupted by another staff member with a client who had a question, so the salesman walked off to help that customer. So I walked out. Next shop I went to I wandered round for a while, stood next to the bikes I was interested in, made eye contact with a salesman who then turned his back on me and walked into his office, and all other staff ignored me totally. Walked out of there in disgust muttering (loudly) about how they had just lost a sale.
Went and had lunch with Quasi and Mrs Quasi - thanks guys - then decided I couldn't be bothered checking out any other bike shops in Hamilton, and returned to Auckland. Very disappointed in these bike shops - ah well, their loss, but pissed off that I wasted my last day off when I could have been test riding bikes in Auckland. :angry2:

Well........ GSX-R600 vs 749R........ I think we know where that will be going..... 749R has small acceleration advatage (due to the 20 extra hp....) but how much does one of those cost???? Id be too scared riding it incase i got a bloody stone chip..... Just like the MV750SPR or the MV1000 Ago.... yeah very trick, and probably fucking quick.... but imagine how fast my GSX-R600/1000 would be if i spent the difference in cost.....
