I got given 80 hours the last time i stood infront of the judge.
57 down 23 to go, learnt my lesson this time, i think they should issue community service more often, the first 2 times they just slapped me an $800 fine, which i throw on my 'tab' that drip feeds them it each week.
anybody else been given community service, and do you think say 100 hours community service is a far more effective punishment than a $1000 fine, i mean in general not just driving offences.
I think hitting people on thier time instead of thier wallet...
i mean offences that go to court, not just general speeding / breach of license stuff.
i found it sinks in alot more than being hit in the pocket.

Yeah, you may be right Mark - especially with the figures 100 hours = $1000.
What pisses me off though is when you hear of cases like the one a few years back where a young guy had $60,000 of accumulated fines converted to a period of community service that effectively valued his time at $300/hour.

A tissue?
Nay.
A scissor kick to the face to all the bastards on my list.
That will make me smile.

Cleaning a rugby club that hosts events, clean up all the beer bottles, fill up bins, mow lawns, sweep the hall floor. mop the floor painting over graffiti...
all that kinda stuff.

Is bloody cruisey community service,300 hours no worries if you can do say 3 or 4 days a week or more,no incentive really if the person is on the dole and has shit loads of free time, courtesy of taxpayers funding their lifestyle.300 hours doing 30hour p/w is 10 weeks big deal. The other 42 weeks they are free.
If you're on the dole why the f.ck would you pay the fines from a benefit, put it onto c/s but work the fine out at $10.00 per hour, heaps of people only earn this much in the hand but WORK for it.
P.S not getting at you Mark just the bloody system,I was done for DIC in 2000,cost me $850 which I paid.Lesson learnt, some clowns don't learn i.e driving hours, wof, rego etc.

For someone who doesnt have a job 80hrs of community service is nothing.

Especially as they only need to turn up once a month for an hour or so, and if you prove to be useless then you get to kick back and eat pies, and for every hour your present for they will probably write off another nine.
Its bullshit.
They should drive em hard, and beat them every time they break pace.

Give them both, $1000 fine and 100 hrs.
Will learn their lesson twice as quick!

It appears I'm getting confused between community service and periodic detention.

I got (from memory) 40 hours for around $2,500 in fines when I was less old. I lived close to the local cemetary, so off to see the sexton I went.
On the first day I was asked to dig over some gardens near the rememberance flagpole. Anzac day was just a few days away and they wanted the area to look schmick for the old diggers.
The sexton warned me several times to watch out for a water pipe buried quite shallow in the flowerbed. Well, fuck me it was shallow alright. Water everywhere. The sexton sent me home, he looked quite upset.
About a month later the probation office sent me a letter, requesting that the sponsor file a return with them showing how many hours I had done. I rocked up to the cemetary, letter in hand.
Cut a long story short, 10 minutes of me in the flowerbed led to quite some drama for all concerned, not to mention a soggy Anzac ceremony.
2 dozen Double Brown later, I had a clean slate. I love the justice system.

If you have fines, and nothing better to do u should do community work. Save your dole money and actually do something.
The most you can get is 400hrs in a year.

Sentencing isn't as simple as the poll makes out. The factors in the Sentencing Act 2002 (http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2002/0009/latest/DLM135342.html) MUST be taken into accout by the judge.
I'm glad you feel community work is doing some good for you SM.

it would be a good idea if it was enforced properly, but as has been
said its to easy to abuse the system do 1/4 or less of the hours an
write off the rest.....i know of a few who have done just that.
It would be better to assign more PD than CS force them to work.

Someone I went to school with owed $10,000 in driving fines this was then changed into approximately 100 hours of community service work. He thought this was absolutely hilarious.

for most workers it is supervised and they have to work the entire time. (supervised by employess of nz justice or whatever)
the less serious offenders like myself get to go with a "sponser"
ie a community group ie a church etc, where you help out.
minimum of 6 hours pw MUST be completed.

Mark not sure of your situation but hey if community work is what works for you then go for it, oh and ask for a reference at the end of it from your sponsor if you can, you have a bit of paper that says you worked and work well at the given tasks is always good.
