View Full Version : Epic Ride 5/02/05 - Wgtn to Taupo
StoneChucker
1st February 2005, 17:50
Myself and VTWIN are embarking on a mammoth ride this Saturday, leaving Wellington at 07:30, over the Taka's, backroads to Dannevirke, then Napier and finally Taupo for lunch (and well earned break).
Returning same day, South round the lake to Turangi, round the mountains to National Park, on to Raetihi, through the ParaPara's to Wanganui. Then on to Palmerston north, over the Pahiatua track, down SH2 past Martinborough, over the hill and home.
This will be a medium paced ride, taking all of about 12 hours (so not for the faint hearted or soft bottomed!)
Would be great to have any Welly riders along, or meet riders along the way from above areas.
PM me for cell phone numbers, and any other details. VTWIN's computer has been "blasted", so don't PM him.
If the weather forcast is ABSOLUTELY crap, then it will be postponed till further notice.
Dave.

But, where the hell is Bainesse?
*EDIT* Oh, yeah would be great to have more people along. I can ring your missus and ask her nicely if that would help? Or pretend to be your boss, requiring you to pull a long 12hr shift? As for money? Do what Paris Hilton/Nicole Richie do on the Simple Life: Flutter your eyelashes and beg for money from strangers at servos... It works for them!

medium paced ride
Hhhhmmmmm what does this mean exactly?
Other than that, I'd been keen, just depends on the other half really.

That does not mean fast by any sense. Just wouldn't suit a brand new, learner rider. With the distance and times we're doing, we can't be stopping for unnecessary things... I certainly won't be speeding, I don't want any tickets hehe. So, ask the other half, and come along :headbang:

Bainesse is just off SH1 near Palmerston North - when you turn off at Himatangi to go to P/North, you pass through Bainesse - IIRC it's about 5-10kms from the SH1 turnoff? (don't blink, you'll miss it!).
I'm thinking of dragging Hamish up to Taupo for the w/end - though we'd o/night up there. We'd probably go up via Paraparas/National Park/Taumarunui/Tokaanu, but might come up with you guys and go back that way.
We got some McDonalds vouchers in the mail - they're really good value - need to go somewhere for the weekend where there's a McD's with a McCafe (buy one latte, get one free)
Weather is looking okay at this stage.
Stonechucker, I'll keep an eye on the weather and contact you in a day or two.

Maybe see you round the mountain somewhere - 2 Blackbirds, a Hayabusa and a BMWR1100RS if you see 4 bikes on the road. We're actually planning to go round East Cape but it's looking pretty iffy, so may well go over National Park, Paraparas, then round to New Plymouth and home.
Safe riding.

Actually, a couple of years ago, two guys turned up out the back of the shop on FA50s. One had vibrated the exhaust off.
Asked 'em where they were going and they sez "Christchurch to see our sister."
"Fuck! Where ya come from?"
"Tauranga."
Jeez louise! That is one loooooooonnnnng ride!

Add the fact that we're doing the "scenic route" and it's going to be 1000+
I shall be attempting the whole desert road on 1 wheel. :msn-wink:

Fark! You aint wrong son....
I rode the Mk2 from Pukekohe to Raumati one wet night after 4 days camping in the infield at Pukekohe. (got home around 1 am or some thing) I could hardly walk for a week afterwards.
Dem Mk1 / 2 seats is HARD.... No seriously - it's called a seat but it's just a single piece of moulded rubber that pertified into a sculpted log of coal 2 minutes after the bike left the factory. Our sheep skin has multiple layers of foam underneath just to coax the fair Vicki onto the pillion.
Thats why we are getting a flash new one.. Woo Hoooooo!

Why do you want to ride a mammoth Dave? You already had a chance at one large hairy mammal this year (well technically she would have been riding you I suppose)... And you turned it down.

Bainesse is on the Palmerston North-Himatangi Road. Heading south, don't take the Opiki Road and it's about 7km further on. School on the left. Heart of the Manawatu sand country.

If you're going to Napier via Route 52, take care on Mrs H's corner (about halfway between Ti-tree Point and Wimbledon).
If she feels up to it, I may pillion said Mrs H to Napier for the weekend.

I am, in my haste to gratuitiously stoke my ego, I forgot where I was going. The ParaParas will be a leeetle more tricky. (Especially since I can't stay up on one wheel, anyhoo....)

Sorry StoneChucker but it's just too much of a mamouth ride for me! Seems I have other things to attend to this weekend - will save my riding time for Sunday morning instead.
Hope this great weather holds up for you and don't get too knackered!
Looks like a long way, are you sure it's 12hrs riding only? - looks longer to me.

Now that was unkind Paul :kick: .... I happen to know that the young "lady" in question was shaved and shampooed just 2 hours before she came over !! I could tell because all the neighbourhood cats were in a frenzy chasing the hair down the street ..... :devil2:

Hey Dave ... I might try to catch up with you guys a bit later on in the day ... :spudwave: got things to do with the kids in the morning but I should be free for the rest of day from about 11am onwards :done: ... and yes I have tightened all the screws and bolts and added more oil to the old girl in anticipation of getting away ... :done: So keep an eye for me ... just look for the cages diving off the road to avoid me and my dangling bits & pieces ...
